Migraine hack?

CaviarAndCigarettes · 02/05/2021 14:39

I've vomited and have been laid on a dark room for a few hours. Feeling well enough now to sit up and ask for help.

Any cures for a horrendous migraine please?

I used to be under a migraine clinic for severe migraines & echo things others have said...cup of coffee or full fat coke as the caffeine constricts your veins which gives relief, also the saltiest crisps you can find (they are often bacon or beef) as salt has similar effect. In terms of medication I have 100mg sumatriptan, 2 x ibruprofen & an anti sickness (domperidone or similar) at first sign of migraine & it eases it to a point I can continue with life and not lie in a dark roo or be sick.

Also things migraine sufferers should do:
-Wake up at same time each day & don't sleep in

  • Eat sensible rounded meals at similar times or little and often
-stay hydrated

Easy little things to help 🤞🏻good luck, my migraines were crippling til I found my medication was right (also take the biggest dose of topiramate morning and night which is a preventative)

I've managed to keep the anadin down and the seven year old is helping me make dinner for the kids bless him. Very glad I keep frozen meatballs in.

My son age 10 has propranolol
Totally kicked his migraines into touch.

He had pizotifen before and gained so much weight.

Triptans I'm told by his consultant 'postpone' symptoms for some people - he is one of them. Knocks away the headache so he gets on with stuff but 12 hours later he still vomits for Britain!

Hope you feel better soon

Dc2 found aspirin the best after trying lots of different medication (including triptans), with a large ice pack over the top of the head.
Sleep in a dark silent room for about four hours usually allows them to function again.
Stress seems to be a major trigger for them.

weegiemum · 02/05/2021 16:24

I used to have a triptan nasal spray which was good, as my gut would just stop working during a migraine so oral painkillers wouldn't absorb. I also had 30/500 dissolving cocodamol for if 8 caught it early enough.

Best cure was the menopause, which I fea4 may not be an option for you today!

ThePontiacBandit · 02/05/2021 16:27

One great tip I got was put something cold on your head and your feet in warm water, it diverts the blood flow from your head and eases the pressure.

Once I can eat and drink again, I swear by coke (full fat like pp), salty crisps. Mine got really bad at one point, now I have sumitriptan which I take at the onset of migraines, it really helps. I also got put on Amitriptyline which prevents them coming on in the first place, game changer.

KurtWilde · 02/05/2021 16:27

I take aspirin direct (3 tablets as instructed) and they melt on your tongue which is perfect for if you're unable to keep anything down.

FindingMeno · 02/05/2021 16:30

Keep away from the screen.
Use a cold flannel on the area of pain.
Make a Dr's appointment and ask about triptans.
Hope you feel better soon.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 02/05/2021 16:30

Thank you for all the tips. The painkillers seem to be helping and I'm going to brave some salty crisps when the kids are eating.
Unfortunately I don't have full sugar coke and my eldest is a bit too young to go to the shop alone. I'll try some fresh orange juice if the crisps stay down to try to get some sugar into me.
Seven year old says he will do bedtime stories tonight so once I've cooked their dinner I'm going to lay down again. The pain has mostly passed but I feel very vague

3 x 100mg disolvible asprin in full fat coke. Take on first sign of migraine but I find it also helps later on.

Doctor prescribed it for me and it works.

mogtheexcellent · 02/05/2021 16:34

Just saw your update. Hope it feels better soon. Take it easy today. Your seven year old is adorable!

SelkieFly · 02/05/2021 16:35

Listen to binaural beats on youtube to relieve pain

SalaciousCrumble · 02/05/2021 16:41

Not going to help now but my Dsis swears she cured herself of migraines by taking a regular high dose magnesium supplement. She used to get them a few times a month and now has them a couple of times a year at most. Might be worth considering if you get them regularly?

ThePontiacBandit · 02/05/2021 16:44

SalaciousCrumble could you find out what dose? I take a supplement but I don’t think it helps that much, might be the dose is too low.

TheFairyCaravan · 02/05/2021 17:26

Magnesium has helped my migraines a lot. This supplement was recommended to me by the National Migraine Clinic because it’s got other bits in it too.

For an acute attack they said 3 soluble aspirin and 1g of soluble paracetamol in a glass of full sugar coke, give it half an hour then take a triptan. I’ve recently changed from Sumatriptan to Naratriptan. She said if you don’t have aspirin then Ibuprofen or naproxen is a suitable alternative but I don’t find them as effective.

I take amyitryptiline and Topiramate as preventatives and have Botox. Recently however, I’ve been prescribed Bisoprolol because I’ve got tachycardia and I’ve noticed a massive improvement that no other beta blocker has given me.

SalaciousCrumble · 02/05/2021 17:57

@ThePontiacBandit she takes the 500mg dose - which I think is the strongest you can buy in normal shops?

The one TheFairyCaravan linked to looks good but quite expensive, I do feel sorry for everyone who suffers with them as it's been quite debilitating for my sister, she spent a lot of time in darkened rooms swigging solpadene.

Fingers crossed for all of you that you find something which helps!

FuckyouCovid21 · 02/05/2021 18:14

Have you considered a preventative? My GP prescribed me propanolol almost 3 years ago and I've gone from 2 or 3 a month to none

Em3978 · 02/05/2021 18:21

I had a killer one yesterday.
Took triptan first thing, followed up with codeine, paracetamol and caffeine. That combo usually kicks a big one into touch. Nope, not this time. Headache was back with a vengeance 2 hours later.

Went back to the trusty Aspirin. Took two 75mg ones, headache gone within the hour!

Such a tiny drug, compared with biggie codeine and triptans. But sometimes works the best. No 'hangover' today either. phew.

Em3978 · 02/05/2021 18:23

I also take a preventative (amitrityline) and magnesium daily. These have certainly reduced the frequency of the baddies.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 02/05/2021 19:05

I just got my Diath pierced today in the hopes of reducing my migraines. It works for some people so I’m crossing my fingers it works for me.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 02/05/2021 19:14

@FuckyouCovid21 this is the first I have had since I began wearing glasses about 8 months ago. I think that is why it crept up on me and took hold before I recognised it for what it was!

If they become more frequent I will certainly look into a preventative

dontgobaconmyheart · 02/05/2021 19:22

Probably not helpful now OP but if these are chronic migraines speak with your GP. Ondansetron oral dispersable tablets (melt on your tongue ones) will stop any vomiting and sick feeling in its tracks. Otherwise I use triptans, and am on long terms meds for mine.

At home hacks for me are a coke and a packet of ready salted crisps with some ibuprofen lysine (better than the standard ibuprofen) 2 paracetamol, and 2 long shaped cold packs, the gel kind from amazon that I keep in the fridge. One on the bag of the neck and one on the forehead. A shoulder and head massage also helps if I can rope anyone in then i will.

Hope you feel better soon, migraines can be so debilitating and draining Flowers

kalikkma · 02/05/2021 19:36

Have had migraines since early childhood. They eased in my 20's but have ramped up massively as I approach 50. Sumitryptan really helps.

YukoandHiro · 02/05/2021 19:39

I'm suffering this evening and am breastfeeding and there's nothing I can take except paracetamol in the house. Let's just say it's not cutting it. Cannot wait to be able to take Syndol again

You can take ibuprofen too when breastfeeding!
