I did something really REALLY stupid today

Background -
I'm waiting for a dental procedure on a painful tooth, so am temporarily not used to it being there carrying a tube of extra strong oragel in my pocket for when it's really bad.

I also have very dry eyes and don't produce tears, so always have a tube of eye lubricant in my pocket.

I have been so, so careful in checking which one is which before applying the eye gel, but this afternoon I didn't, as was too busy talking.

Reached into the pocket, pulled out a tube, took off the lid and began to apply WHILST STILL BLOODY TALKING!!!.AS soon as the oragel touched my eye I screamed, and carried on screaming until my partner managed to race to the kitchen to soak some paper towel in cold water for me to put on my eye, whilst he guided me to the sink as at this point I couldn't see. Just had what felt like a red hot poker in my eye.

I then just kept rinsing my eye with cold water, for what felt like hours because hell fire, the pain WAS hellish!

I'm so very lucky for my eye is ok as the oragel only just touched the inner corner of my lower lid. Had I managed to spread it across the whole of it I shudder to think what would have been the outcome.

My lower lid and skin below it are sore and red, but my sight is fine.

I never, never want to go through such a horrible experience again.

what a fucking stupid, idiotic thing for me to do.

Ooh ouch!

Ironic given Oragel's amazing painkilling properties!

Chatanooga1 · 01/05/2021 22:33

Glad you’re ok. I once squirted Otex ear drops in my eye but it wasn’t particularly painful, thank goodness!

Icancelledthecheque · 01/05/2021 22:55

If it’s any consolation, my friend did the same thing but with a tube of NAIL GLUE!

No lasting effects thank god!

Glad you're ok! What a shock!
If it makes you feel any less stupid, as a teen, I used to wear monthly contact lenses. They were stored overnight in a bleach solution (for cleaning) that you added a neutralising tablet to. After 6 hours, they were safe to wear.

One night I forgot to put the tablet in.

It didn't start to burn at first. In fact I didn't work it out until I had put both lenses in. Thankfully our local A&E had a specialist eye unit, who were able to thoroughly rinse out my eyes. The pain was so bad.... thankfully no long lasting damage!

So yeah, you're not the only stupid one!!

IFiredUpTheQuattro · 01/05/2021 23:30

@StCharlotte - ironic is the word!

@Chatanooga1 - maube not too painful - but a shock all the same when you realise what you've done!

@Icancelledthecheque - nail glue!! But did it glue her eye together? I don't use it, but I'm guessing it's strong stuff.

@sar302 - oh crikey, that sounds even worse than what happened to me. I'm so glad you're ok.

Not me but DH once borrowed a tube of moisturizes from DDs room and rubbed it all over his face, only seconds later discover it was tingle lube.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/05/2021 23:49

I once tipped a whole bottle of top coat nail varnish into my eye thinking it was my eye drops.
Painful.

figuresomethingout · 02/05/2021 00:28

I put chicken pox scar removal cream in both eyes every night for a month :) Obviously I made a bee line for an optician when I realised. He was quite bemused, as was I.

figuresomethingout · 02/05/2021 00:30

I have also mixed up piles cream with chillblain cream (very stingy) and taken various pessaries orally.

I despair of myself.

You're not a serial offender, give yourself a break!

figuresomethingout · 02/05/2021 00:33

Plus, if it makes you feel any better, last night I attempted to apply a temporary filling to a disintegrating tooth as the exposed nerve was so painful. I didn't successfully follow any of the recommended steps, found the cement stuff on the tooth was unbearably painful and ended up scraping it off DIY style with a KNIFE.

IAmFleshIAmBone · 02/05/2021 00:43

I once had a freak accident with my glasses - I was adjusting them on my face , and the leg snapped off with the jaggy end stabbing me in the eyeball 😕 I've also srayed hairspray, perfume etc directly into my eyeball. And drank nail varnish remover. Glad your eye is OK 😊

Sparklfairy · 02/05/2021 00:46

Out of interest OP, what eye lubricant do you use? I'm struggling with the same and also dont produce tears but cant find anything that works!

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 02/05/2021 00:52

Ouch!

I was once having a good old scratch in my ear with a cotton bud (yes I know you're not meant to but it feels so good.) My phone rang, so I let go of the cotton bud leaving it in my ear. Yes, you guessed it. Put the phone to my ear forcing the cotton bud in. It was agony and bled a lot. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone so just spent a week being deaf in one ear. Blush

Happinesscomesfromwithin · 02/05/2021 02:23

@BluebellsGreenbells that made me laugh!!!! Thanks I needed that.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 02/05/2021 07:39

DH once put his contact lenses in right after using hand sanitizer. It made my eyes water in sympathy.
I've not made the mistake, but I've come darn close to taking one of DH's amilodipine instead of my amitriptyline. Similar packaging. Given I already have lower than average blood pressure the effects would be disastrous.

Notavegan · 02/05/2021 07:41

I once took a big gulp of radox thinking it was plax. Still feel sick thinking about it

IFiredUpTheQuattro · 02/05/2021 08:06

@BluebellsGreenbells - That must have been interesting!

@DrMadelineMaxwell - Nail varnish! Oh my! that made my toes curl!

@figuresomethingout - with all of your mishaps ,and your tooth one making my stomach flip, have you finally figured it out then?

@IAmFleshIAmBone - it just shows that we don't have to look for accidents doesn't it - they find us. I hope your eye is ok too!

@WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo - Now that was karma! ....and now I have an image of an ear channeling cotton buds instead of earrings!

@CigarsofthePharoahs - Ih hell, alcohol in the eye, I'm really wincing! And You with the packaging. Yes similar packaging is never a good idea! I had the same problem in Aldi once with Haloumi cheese V their own grilling cheese. ....all I can say iis don't eat the grilling stuff - tasteless rubber!

@Notavegan - so you weren't relaxed after using it then?

I did that - well I put the wrong lids on the bottles and rinsed the lens in acid rather than saline then put it back in my eye. Oh my bloody god that was a painful few hours.
IFiredUpTheQuattro · 02/05/2021 08:10

@Sparklfairy - The best one I ever used was Lacrilube, but a few years ago there began to be problems with its production and availability.

So, I now use Xalin Night. It's a nice soft one Used mainly at night, but I top up through the day maybe once or twice depending. You can buy it over the counter, but I get it on prescription.

@sar302 - ouch bloody ouch!!! I'm wincing over my morning cuppa here!

I don't know whether to say I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who has done crazy things like this, but I'm glad you're all here to tell the tale - hopefully fully unscathed.

My eye feels much better this morning after being doused with eyecream last night - yes, I checked the label! Roll on seeing the dentist...... only 8 more sleeps!!!

I once managed to get my kids to brush their teeth with hydrocortisone cream... we were away and I muddled it with the travel toothpaste. Quickly realised when dc commented on it not frothing up. Felt so bad for days!

lissie123 · 02/05/2021 09:08

Dear god. This is embarrassing for my ddad. He’s a retired GP. Reached for what he thought was a bottle of gaviscon which was actually chamomile lotion. He was violently sick started having heart palpitations and was blue lighted to A&E. perked up after about two hours and went home with no lasting effects other than huge embarrassment.

FrenchFancie · 02/05/2021 09:42

Not me but a work colleague got drunk one night and got confused between eye drops and verucca gel. He had to go to a&e and had very sore eyes (it was the night that redundancies had been announced and although he was safe, there were a lot of worse for wear people that day!)

vampirethriller · 02/05/2021 09:55

I once, in the dark and fumbling in my handbag, mistook a bottle of hand sanitizer for my lube. Killed the moment somewhat.

Velvian · 02/05/2021 10:16

I once brushed my teeth with Savlon. I was at someone else's house and just thought they had particularly disgusting toothpaste.
