Bloody cat has dropped a live mouse in the living room

... and just buggered off. I have tried to catch it to lob it in the garden but no luck. For the record the cat despises me so I am certain this was done on purpose.

Square of chocolate in a pint glass, horizontally, near the mouse?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 01/05/2021 20:19

PS. Could be worse. My Maine Coone left us with very live rat and magpie.

Aprilshowersandhail · 01/05/2021 20:21

Your dcat isn't such a genius as a recent mner's.. Her dcat dropped one in her bedroom..

She retreated to the spare room leaving dcat hers.. For several nights I believe!
Smart or what?

Skyliner001 · 01/05/2021 20:21

Please don't 'lob' it in the garden.

Thefamilybusiness · 01/05/2021 20:24

Think yourself lucky. Mine left a live mouse in my trainer, it wasn't until I put my foot in and wondered what the warm squishy moving thing at the end was that I realised! Also, don't put it in the garden, you'll get it back ten minutes later.

@Skyliner001

Please don't 'lob' it in the garden.
That was a turn of phrase. Although I suspect a preferable fate than being caught by the cat which is what will happen if I don’t manage to get it out of the house

One of mine does this regularly. Ideally you want a welly, discover where exactly it has gone and then encourage it towards the welly. Eg if it's under furniture, put all the lights on, wedge the open end of the welly at one end and use a broom handle to gently push it out. It will go in the boot rather than into the open.

D-Cat did this the other morning; Mouse scurried off seemingly energetic, but DH found the shocked live but not moving mouse a few hours later & chucked it out.

Thecatisboss · 01/05/2021 20:59

From experience mice really like nut butter to lure them into a Tupperware box and trap them to release outdoors. Dcat used to do this frequently when she was younger (& wanted to bring us a present).

SantaMonicaPier · 01/05/2021 21:01

Mine often brought them in as gifts for me. The most memorable was a live bird...

grumpyhetty · 01/05/2021 21:05

@TrainspottingWelsh - that seems like a plan. My previous attempt involved opening the patio doors and trying to trap it under the dog’s bowl/chase it through the doors (punctuated by several unbecoming shrieks - god knows what the neighbour’s thought was happening). It has disappeared at present and the cat is sleeping on the sofa without a care in the world.

Mine brought one up to our bedroom a few nights ago....luckily he meowed once he'd let it escape which is what woke DH up! It was clearly a thank you present for DH who hadn't bothered to dig said cat out from under our bed at bedtime and shut him downstairs to stop him bringing in said mouse Grin

grumpyhetty · 01/05/2021 21:14

@SantaMonicaPier if she brings in a live bird, I may have to move out. A scared, flapping bird in a confined space is my idea of hell.

We have a DCat thats a prolific hunter, we've had to stop letting him out overnight in the spring as its several live things a night, mostly mice. However, it was a live rat last week. Thank god I was in the kitchen and ushered him out rather quickly.

I can cope with live mice loose, we have 3 cats in total and the live ones get caught pretty quickly again but I'm do worried about rats!

fedup51 · 01/05/2021 21:21

Similar to someone else above... Cat left me a lovely present of dead mouse in my sipper. First I knew about it was getting up for work at 5am sliding my foot into my slipper and quelch! Queue hysterics whilst still half asleep trying to comprehend what was going on.

This. ^^

The “welly trick” works 99% of the time.

ReuT3 · 01/05/2021 21:32

When you find it make it your pet instead. But it a cage and feed it treats then look at the cat to see how it makes him/her feel.

VenusClapTrap · 01/05/2021 21:39

Dcat used to do this all the time. Usually at 3am. I second the welly trick, and keeping cats inside dusk till dawn.

GiantKitten · 01/05/2021 21:47

We apparently had a live mouse in for at least 24 hours this week.
Cat was doing its sitting staring thing for ages at a definitely mouseless corner in the kitchen on Thursday (I kept checking, no mouse Grin)
Then yesterday DH was sitting quietly at the table in back room - which is open to kitchen - and realised something was moving behind some boxes...
He shut out cat and me, opened French windows, moved boxes and revealed adult field mouse 😮
When it saw the outside it skedaddled and so far hasn’t been seen again (phew)

GrettaGreen · 01/05/2021 21:54

Following 2 HALF dead birds and a live mouse that took me a week to catch dcat has now lost the privelige of independent access. All doors and windows now firmly shut and she now just tortures me by wanting in and out 10 times over 30 minute intervals instead. It's a good thing she's cute!

grumpyhetty · 02/05/2021 23:23

The mouse is now an ex- mouse dispatched by my terrier after a day of running round my living room. The cat has a huge bell so I am not sure how she catches anything but I will keep the cat flap locked in the evenings

Wish I'd known the welly trick when I spent 2 hours in the middle of the night chasing a field mouse around my studio flat. In the end we succumbed to letting the cat catch him again, and then grabbing the cat by the scruff and having him deposit the mouse into a Tupperware.

Mouse was transferred safe and well, if slightly shaken up, to the meadow across the road.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 03/05/2021 07:35

My late DCat used to do this. A teatowel dropped on it and gently scoop it up.

DCat brought in a live magpie, and dumped it in my bedroom ....

Justdowhatyouweretold · 03/05/2021 07:40

We were woken at 6am with birds on our roof going mad. Heard a load thud!

The bloody cat 2 mins later was in the kitchen with a bloody magpie. Luckily still alive so I left the doors and windows open for it to fly away.

It was huge! And he isn't a big cat at all.

joystir59 · 03/05/2021 07:42

Your cat loves you so much he's brought you a treasure.
