As a teenager I like listening to a certain rock band.
Just found their album on iTunes, downloaded and listened.
I was shocked. One of the songs - sung by grown men - ' she's a 13 yr tease , with bleach blonde hair. Let me eat your cookies , let me see your cookies '
Sat in the bath gob smacked. When I was 15 , this never made me question.

Has anyone else come across something that as a younger person it never crossed your mind but now it's a wtf moment

@ILoveMyMonkey

The film cruel intentions. Loved it back in the day but rewatched it as an adult and it’s pretty bad - all that taking the 14 year olds virginity and using each other and sexual bets etc - yuck.
You do realise this is a film adaptation of a 200+ year old book. Back then it was normal to be married that young.

All the rolling stones songs - "under my thumb" "brown sugar" - need I say more

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 02/05/2021 19:32

Every time I hear that bloody song on the radio by Diana Ross

Respectfully I say to thee
I’m aware that you’re cheating
But no one makes me feel like you do.

Get some self respect love.

And stop playing the bloody song.

NotReallyTheVicar · 02/05/2021 19:32

@Georgyporky

All things bright & beautiful :-

The rich man in his castle,
The poor man at his gate,
God made them, high and lowly,
And ordered their estate.

Yeah, right.

This verse is not usually included in modern hymn books because it is so anachronistic.
LovelyIssues · 02/05/2021 19:32

Me at 14 dating a 25 year old Blush and no one out his family, mine or friends batted an eyelid at it.

GameSetMatch · 02/05/2021 19:33

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Jolene by Dolly Parton. It makes me so angry listening to it!

LadyCatLover2 · 02/05/2021 19:34

I'll probably be flamed for this... but Monica and Richard in Friends.

Yes, she was in her mid 20s, but he was her dad's best friend and had known her since she was born. That's just... not ok Confused

LovelyIssues · 02/05/2021 19:34

@AuntMasha same Sad

Iseestupidpeople · 02/05/2021 19:35

I find it funny you are all offended by things that are the past and can not changed now. Yet none of you seem to have any problems with a PM that lies steals and cheats, you could do something about. Being an adulterer thy leave illegitimate children he refuses to take responsibility or pay for around and he was sacked for lying from 4 jobs how is he even able to still get a job. This wouldn’t fly 20 years ago.

TatianaBis · 02/05/2021 19:36

Wtf doesn’t have a problem with Boris?

WorkHardPlayHard1 · 02/05/2021 19:38

@Thants1

I’ve never mentioned this to anyone before but recently started thinking about it and realised that it might not have been what it seemed. When I was a teenager I was sexually active from around 14 and went to the GP to get the pill thinking that would be sensible. He advised that I went on the contraceptive injection so every 3 months I went to see him to get it and he would make me undress my top half so he could feel my breasts to check for lumps. I’ve never heard of anyone having to do this. Would be Interested to hear if anyone has any opinions on it?
This screams abuse. Report him now xxx
SoMuchForSummerLove · 02/05/2021 19:39

What's the thing about Elf? I don't get it.

Yes, men as passive objects to be 'taken' by predatory women, whose only value is their looks. She says she can't 'compete' with Jolene and her emerald green eyes? I thought he was your 'man'? Shouldn't you have more value to him than flaming locks of auburn hair? And that's all he thinks of you well, he's not worth the bother and you're well rid.
petridishmystery · 02/05/2021 19:40

@LadyCatLover2

Billie Piper and Chris Evans

Everything about young Britney Spears. Fetishing school uniform (which they don't even wear in the US), and sexualising a girl of 16. There would be a very different reaction now.

Saved by the Bell. How many times did they dress 16 year old Kelly in a bathing suit? Creepy.

This has reminded me of an episode of Married with Children I saw years ago that still pops in my head now and again. Not sure when I saw it but think it would have been when Nickelodeon used to become Paramount after 7 o clock. Didn’t see the full episode but it guest starred Tiffany Thiessen (hence why talking about Kelly reminded me), I only saw the end so not sure what she did to “deserve” it but Christina Applegate’s character tied her to some lockers wearing nothing but a towel, which was being held by her dog. Just as the bell went and people started to come into the halls, Christina called the dog who pulled away the towel so basically a young high schooler was then left tied up and naked in front of teachers and fellow students. I think at most I would have been about 13 years old. It made me feel incredibly uncomfortable and it frequently pops in my head and I don’t like it. Just found it on YouTube to see if it’s how I remember and it is, and as it cuts away you hear the audience whooping and cheering. I know it’s just a throwaway joke and didn’t happen and you’re not supposed to think deeply on it but it is just vile. I think the channels stopped channel sharing around 2001 so that’s the latest I’d have seen it I think, the only time I used to ever catch that show was when the channels shared.
Romney981 · 02/05/2021 19:42

I was listening to an old Kate Bush album recently and the song Infant Kiss came on. Very strange lyrics that I didn't question years ago.

Iseestupidpeople · 02/05/2021 19:44

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Men in drag. Didn't bother me at all in my drama students days but that was decades ago.
What is wrong with men in drag please?!
Gwenhwyfar · 02/05/2021 19:46

"but apparently not bothered by the romanticized stalker behaviour of the bloke that fancies Keira Knightley?"

He doesn't actually stalk her though, does he?

Cowbells · 02/05/2021 19:50

Iseestupidpeople There's quite a lot of misogyny in drag. A lot of overt hatred and disgust at women's bodies, a lot of stereotypes of bitchiness, vanity etc. If you compare it to blackface, there are uncomfortable similarities. To a lesser extent than blackface, it's the powerful parodying the powerless. Never nice.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/05/2021 19:51

"Lol at 2 become 1 being ‘absolutel filth’!"

Yes, and if a child is listening it can be explained as two people being in love anyway.

SueSaid · 02/05/2021 19:51

'What is wrong with men in drag please?!'

Where to start. They are parodies of women, they are mocking women in the guise of 'entertainment'. It is 100% misogynistic crap, including offensive names such as Miss Carriage. Drag race will surely go the same way as the black and white minstrels when their fans realise what they are supporting.

Niconacotaco · 02/05/2021 19:52

A boy in my primary school had undiagnosed dyslexia (diagnosed at age 9 or 10). We all thought he was stupid or slow. I can’t remember any of us saying it to him but he must have known that’s what we thought. (He was well liked and I genuinely don’t remember any overt bullying but who knows what really happened) It’s mortifying now that we thought that, and also that he probably thought the same.
Anyway, there was an excruciating afternoon where we were all kept late in class while the teacher humiliated him in front of us all, shouting at him to read something off the board. We were all rooting for him, mouthing the words, almost trying to transmit them telepathically. It was awful. It changed my opinion of him - it suddenly became obvious to me as a child that he wasn’t stupid. It also really changed my opinion of the teacher. Until then we just thought she was strict and old fashioned, and then we knew she was a bully.
I’m not sure what happened next but he was removed from the school soon afterwards and went somewhere that actually helped him and he rejoined our class in high school where he explained his dyslexia to us.
It amazes me that nobody recognised it in the late 80s but I suppose even now it can be missed.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/05/2021 19:52

"The priests are not aspirational characters! The jokes are usually on them."

Of course. Dougal is stupid and Ted is egotistic and corrupt, but at least they have some redeeming features. Father Jack is just a pure joke figure.

MargotMay · 02/05/2021 19:53

Saw "Exotic Pop on BBC" the other night. Featured foreign artists like Demis Roussos & Nana Miskouri. Vanessa Paradis was performing at the age of 14/15 singing Joe Le Taxis. So very wrong, couldn't believe it. Never thought anything of it watching TOTP & singing the lyrics in my French lesson 😩

3scape · 02/05/2021 19:53

Men in drag. They are performing comedy that parodies women. It's not everyone's cup of tea to enjoy caricature assassinations of certain groups of people. Other people consider it to be art, others still are aroused by it.
