Do you ever wonder what happened to fictitious characters?

When I was younger one of my favourite books was Junk, about teens who end up addicted to heroin. I found myself idly wondering yesterday what might have happened next to the characters. They’d be in their early 40s now.

Does anybody else do this - think about when the book was released and wonder about them? A book I read in 2013 was set in summer 2011 and ended with the birth of a baby girl and I thought ‘oh she’s 10 in July’ Grin

My naughty little sister I completely forgot about that book my big sister used to read it to me and I knew it so well I got to the point I relayed the book without her reading it to me. Feel like I need a walk down memory lane and to reread that.

@Pyewackect

Nothing happened to them because they never existed in the first place. They were an invention of somebodies imagination.

Conan-Doyle used to get sack fulls of post , redirected from Marylebone sorting office, addressed to Sherlock Holmes. In the end he had to employ an assistant to help him handle if all.

I think we all get that.

Not so much books for me although sometimes in my head I carry the story on a bit. Films get me especially the disaster/apocalyptic ones. The end of War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise, did the family get back together? how long did it take to tidy up the mess!
Same with WWZ how long did they live in the safe haven colony for? When did they manage to kill all the zombies ? I always need the boring clean up film to follow Grin

I would like to know what happened to Tracy Waterhouse and Courtney (or Imogen Brown and her daughter Lucy). Did they manage to settle somewhere and live happily ever after in their new identities? Who was Courtney? What about her parents? They were obviously looking for her, unbeknownst to Tracy. So many questions! I loved Tracy and really wanted her to be happy.

It’s Adrian Mole for me.

Me too - I reread them recently.

There have been a few sequels published to Gone With the Wind.

I can imagine Famous Five's Julian as a Tory politician, too.

Susan from the Narnia books. Dismissed in a couple of sentences in the last book because she was growing up and getting into boys and had stopped talking about Narnia. Not permitted into Narnia. Such blatant misogyny! I hope she was having a great time going to dances with GIs and lived to 100.

It’s Adrian Mole for me. I read the first book when was about eleven and have grown up with him. Did he survive cancer and get back with Pandora, or is he still hoping from bed to bed. Are his parent’s ok, how are his sons, Glen especially-I hope he is still happy with his middle class girl friend in the Wimpy starter home and little William, did he ever come home to visit. Is Grace still a brat? How is Adrian finding co-parenting with three mothers in modern society.

I wish Sue Townsend was still alive because you just know his pandemic-era diaries would have been released. The dilemma of who to form a bubble with. His parents flat out refusing to follow the rules. A misunderstanding at Sainsburys where he accidentally pushed in front of a nurse at the checkout. The angst of the weekly clap and how much clapping shows the right amount of appreciation without edging into overzealous.

I need to read that book! You’ve nailed it!

I am sad that we didn't get to read the next instalment of Adrian Mole, but as I've grown up with him - he's 15 months older than me - I am determined to believe he made a full recovery and is alive and well in Leicestershire or wherever. The end of The Prostate Diaries was very touching but I can't see that another book in which everything was actually resolved and he was living happily ever after with Pandora would have worked - apparently she was halfway through writing one.

I just finished reading Goodnight Mister Tom for the first time. I loved it but am sorry I missed this when it was published - I would have been 11 or 12. ff still alive Will would have turned 90 last month! I think Mister Tom wasn't actually quite as old as people saw him as being - perhaps he's in his late 50s or early 60s. I will have to catch up with Michelle Magorian's other books, have several in paperback or on Kindle.
