Do you ever wonder what happened to fictitious characters?

When I was younger one of my favourite books was Junk, about teens who end up addicted to heroin. I found myself idly wondering yesterday what might have happened next to the characters. They’d be in their early 40s now.

Does anybody else do this - think about when the book was released and wonder about them? A book I read in 2013 was set in summer 2011 and ended with the birth of a baby girl and I thought ‘oh she’s 10 in July’ Grin

@Clawdy

I see Julian as a Tory politician.......
I see him like the one in Ghosts. Isn't he actually called Julian? Grin

I remember Darrell going to St Andrews, I thought it was because in those days Oxford and Cambridge didn't admit women. I have always had a fondness for St Andrew's for that reason. But I watched the Michael Portillo programme the other day, and women could go to Oxbridge back then, so I don't know where I got my misapprehension from.

I just hope Buffy ended up with Angel and not Spike.

I know the answer, do you want to know?

HarkAVagrant · 30/04/2021 10:12

@Liverbird77

George from the Famous Five. I've often wondered what happened to George.
I think she became an investigative journalist, or a hard-drinking, snarky war correspondent.

Buffy lives on in the comics.
PurBal · 30/04/2021 10:14

I loved Junk. In fact I have two copies. But no, I don't. Maybe thats weird. Something to ponder upon...

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/04/2021 13:10

@HarkAVagrant yes, I think she got together with Spike but they were broken up by the end of the comic series?

KillingMeDeftly · 30/04/2021 13:24

A fan fiction writer transed her!

She also wrote a rather depressing end for Gwen from Malory Towers.

FoxyTheFox · 30/04/2021 13:27

It was hinted that she and Spike got back together, they had a talk where they decided they were better together. Angel was planning to try rescue Illyria from a portal once she'd had enough time to kill everything on the other side of it so that nothing would escape.

Ugh, I hated them as a couple. She's with Angel in my head Grin

I hope Taggie binned Rupert Campbell Black after his behaviour in the last book.

Re Junk, I hope Tar became a successful artist.

Liverbird77 · 30/04/2021 18:22

@KillingMeDeftly oh my, that almost made me cry!

KillingMeDeftly · 30/04/2021 18:28

@Liverbird77 the Gwen story? Me too! There was a thread here a while back about how horrible they all were at Malory Towers and it made me see the books in a new light. Then I picked up the complete set on sale one day to read to DC but had to stop as they were all so nasty!

The BBC dramatisation last year was fun though. The cast was very diverse, which I didn't mind at all, but it did make me think that several of them wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes at the real Malory Towers before being bullied for being fat, working class, or foreign!

Liverbird77 · 30/04/2021 18:34

@KillingMeDeftly I used to love those books too, but you're right, I don't think they stand up to scrutiny these days.

I never enjoyed St. Clare's as much for some reason.

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 30/04/2021 18:37

Will from Goodnight Mister Tom. I actually can't recall how old Tom was in the book buy in my head he was old and I was worry about how long Tom would be around. Will would be in his 80s now I think.

I reckon the chances of Dickon surving the war would be slim.

Colin I'm not sure if he'd have gone to the trenches- always thought he was a tosser and wouldn't pit it passed him to lie and pretend he had health issues

Mary wouldn't have been impressed with Colin's behaviour, then when Dickon died she'd have never spoken to Colin again.

There's a small chance I've spend a bit too much time thinking about this ...

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 30/04/2021 18:40

I won't go into my idea of what happened to the secret seven and famous five. You all might think you need to send for help...

Whathappenedtothelego · 30/04/2021 18:44

I always think about the Swallows and Amazons too. I think the Amazon's father died in WW1.
And then they were all the age to be affected by WW2. I imagine John and Roger serving in the navy. And I'm sure the others would have got stuck into the WAAF, or the Wrens, or perhaps nursing.

Pyewackect · 30/04/2021 18:57

Nothing happened to them because they never existed in the first place. They were an invention of somebodies imagination.

Conan-Doyle used to get sack fulls of post , redirected from Marylebone sorting office, addressed to Sherlock Holmes. In the end he had to employ an assistant to help him handle if all.

@MinnieJackson

Junk is on my wish list at the minute! I always wonder how Eleanor Oliphant is getting on Smile
I wonder about Eleanor too! I am overly invested in June Osbourne from The Handmaid's Tale (I know, previously book now TV) but I love her.....
IndecentCakes · 30/04/2021 20:29

I wonder if Bill and Clarissa were actually a couple.

UnitedRoad · 30/04/2021 20:47

Yes to St Clare’s snd Malory Towers. Also The Secret Seven!

Tv wise Bren and Tony from Dinnerladies. I’d love to have seen a ten year reunion, maybe a wedding or even funeral, with all the characters (still alive so I don’t know whose funeral it could be? The guy who always had a yogurt or poor Steve who slipped on the spilt orange squash) reunited. Very very sadly this is not to be, apart from, embarrassingly, in my head.

Actually Baby and Johnny are still together too.

Crimeismymiddlename · 30/04/2021 21:03

It’s Adrian Mole for me. I read the first book when was about eleven and have grown up with him. Did he survive cancer and get back with Pandora, or is he still hoping from bed to bed. Are his parent’s ok, how are his sons, Glen especially-I hope he is still happy with his middle class girl friend in the Wimpy starter home and little William, did he ever come home to visit. Is Grace still a brat? How is Adrian finding co-parenting with three mothers in modern society.

Mrsfrumble · 30/04/2021 21:35

Richard Papen definitely married a very beautiful woman, but it was ultimately a cold and empty marriage because he never stopped pining over Camilla.

(I think he’s mixed up in my mind with the Joni Mitchell song “The Last Time I Saw Richard”, with the lines
“Richard got married to a figure skater
And he bought her a dishwasher and a coffee percolator
And he drinks at home now most nights with the TV on
And all the house lights left up bright.”)
