Help me with DH’s hay fever!

BitchIAmFromChicago · 26/04/2021 21:05

He’s suffering and I’m sympathetic, but the sneezing and sniffing 24 hours a day is starting to drive me mad!

He’s always started with hay fever in Feb and it’s usually dwindled late summer, but the last few years it seems to hit him pretty much all year round.

He’s been to a chemist and got the strongest tablets they give out to take at night (phenegran?) and these seem to allow him a bit of sleep. But then he will usually wake up in the morning unable to breathe properly, will do about 20 sneezes and liquid will literally pour from his nose all day. He looks horrendous. He’s also a performance sneezer so I’m listening to about 50 scream sneezes a day. Sigh!

He’s been to the doctors once but it didn’t amount to anything and he was fobbed off.

Has anyone else suffered badly and found something that helped? If so, what was it? Or is there anything he can go to the doctors and request?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like bad tree pollen allergy

My DH has it

As do I (DH had it all his life, mine made a surprise appearance at 45.... atchoo! Just as well I was always (mostly ) sympathetic Wink

We take cetirizine (alacan) single dose twice a day (ie double dose)

You may want to check with GP

We’re double dosing + using eye drops + nasal spray and it’s liveable

But really, he should check with GP

Good luck

It might not be hay fever.

Fucket · 26/04/2021 21:14

Yes I have ridiculous amounts of allergies. I use fexofenadine daily on prescription. I also have a prescription nasal spray.

The stuff otc is useless for severe sufferers.

He ought to go to his GP it’s fairly easy to get these prescribed.

Right, he’s going to the GP then. He’s been absolutely horrendous with it today and it is effecting sleep and every day life. He was up at 3am sneezing this morning and I’ve noticed he’s snoring a lot more like too.

Fexofenadine will sort him out.

I take it daily all year round and double dose during these months.

I also take montelukast at night time as I suffer with asthma which is triggered by allergies.

Absolute game changer! He needs proper prescription antihistamines. Over the counters do nothing for moderate/severe sufferers.

YukoandHiro · 26/04/2021 21:21

Is he taking daily antihistamines. My DH was like this until he started taking zirtek every day. If he misses a day he feels it straight away

ConnieCaterpillar70 · 26/04/2021 21:21

I find the prescription nasal sprays work better than anything in tablet form. I've not had hay fever since I was 18 but this year has been awful.

DH is also a performance sneezer but thankfully Covid has tamed him from doing it in public......... Grin

gmailconfusion2 · 26/04/2021 21:22

I second GP prescribes fexofenadine, I take nose drops and eye drops. GP only gave them to me after I said I couldn't cope by taking two different types of OTC tablets one six hours after the other 'YOU CAN'T DO THAT..' Yes, well I also can't work constantly sneezing.

Ilikewinter · 26/04/2021 21:24

DH suffers at night time and last year we got a Dyson air purifier fan (admittedly it was ridiculously expensive but it was lock down and I was fed up!).....anyway it worked fabulously, DH managed to sleep through the night and didnt wake me up with his snoring/death breathing.
Id also recommend Fexofenadine

BitchIAmFromChicago · 26/04/2021 21:25

He has the phenogran at night and then piriton or similar in the morning. This doesn’t seem to have much effect on his symptoms though.

I’m making notes and will get him to mention them to the GP. I’m just worried that they won’t do anything about allergies as we have a dog. Even though the dog was here loooong before these issues started.

My DS suffers with horrendous hay fever OP as did my ex and his immunologist prescribed a nasal spray called Avamys.

It’s been amazing and DS can just take regular antihistamines alongside it and his hayfever is controlled almost completely.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 26/04/2021 21:29

Fexofenadine the only thing that worked for me.

BitchIAmFromChicago · 26/04/2021 21:32

Fexofenadine seems to be the one to get. Thanks everyone!

My husband suffers badly and had the steroid jab about 6 weeks ago. The results have been pretty magical, he says it's 95% gone.
Not sure how long it'll last but so far so good.

Sparklfairy · 27/04/2021 12:55

My brother suffered horribly. The game changer for him was a cotton bud dipped in vaseline and rubbing it around inside his nostril, making sure all the little hairs were coated. It seems to trap the pollen etc before it gets far enough to make him sneeze/eyes stream etc.

Couchbettato · 27/04/2021 13:24

Fexofenadine over here too. Only thing that helped . Well. Hay fever disappeared actually after having a baby but I have an inkling that won't help your husband.

fluffysocksgoodbookwine · 27/04/2021 15:01

If he has a lot of nasal secretion with it, he can buy beclometasone nasal spray (beconase) from the pharmacy, to use as well as the tablet antihistamines.

Jennifer2021 · 27/04/2021 23:31

Second the poster who suggested fexofenidine. We have a serial sneezer in this house complete with streaming eyes and nose. Try and get an allergy test done for DH too we had one done which thrown up some surprising results but at least now we know what to avoid / limit exposure to DC1.

BitchIAmFromChicago · 29/04/2021 17:42

He had a telephone appointment with the doctor today. Apparently they don’t prescribe anything for hay fever anymore 🤷🏼‍♀️. They’ve sent an email to the pharmacist recommending an OTC combo but I’m not sure what this is yet. DH did say that he’d tried numerous sprays and tablets but these didn’t work.
And to top it off the pharmacist won’t give him phenergan as drug users have started using it combined with something to get high. Great!

jajabanks · 29/04/2021 17:45

You can buy fexafenodine from independent pharmacy, just fill in online consultation and then a pharmacist will review.

TheDogsMother · 29/04/2021 17:46

Another one for Fexofenadine. If I forget to take them I find the tree pollen unbearable.

BitchIAmFromChicago · 29/04/2021 17:49

@jajabanks I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks, I’ll have a look.

I take fexofenadine. I take anti depressants and used to take piriton. By 10am I was fast asleep so the GP prescribed FF.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/04/2021 17:53

Well that's a bit shit of the GP. I'm extremely lucky that my GP has exactly the same hay fever as me, so she knows how miserable it is. I have a prescription anti-histamine called Drynol which is better than any of the OTC equivalents. She also prescribed a nasal spray called Nasonex, but it gave me quite bad nosebleeds so I stopped using it.

FenceSplinters · 29/04/2021 17:57

I have fexofenadine from the doctor. Get him to ask directly for it.
