Is this a thing? Surely it won't come out right?

I do this all the time - as long as they aren’t dirty potatoes.
Saves time, no waste and the skin contains fibre and the most vitamins.

GolfForBrains · 26/04/2021 16:18

It's fine. I do it all the time! All the healthy bits kept in and it saves time and faff.

Breathmiller · 26/04/2021 16:21

I have had skin on mash for years. I love it. Feels much more wholesome. Mind you the copious amounts of butter, milk and mayonnaise probably balances out any health benefits of the skin though Grin

It's delicious with the skins left on.

Fussy eaters may turn their nose up at it though.

Zarinea · 26/04/2021 16:24

It's great - lazy, healthy goodness.

But PP - tell me more about mayo in mash? I just do butter but I'm always up for innovation!

sylbunny · 26/04/2021 16:24

Yeh it's delicious, quicker and more nutritious! My 3 year old is a bit picky about it so I just pick the biggest bits of skin out of hers.

ChekhovsWorkshoppedShooter · 26/04/2021 16:24

We’re giving Gousto a go and they’re very keen on no

Janaih · 26/04/2021 16:24

I could never make good mash till hello fresh came along. Very tasty.

Akire · 26/04/2021 16:24

I leave on now as well. Faster more fibre and extra few lumps not killed anyone. Unless you have any fussy eaters.

Bluedeblue · 26/04/2021 16:24

We are not fussy eaters at all. I'm just wondering what happens to the skin? Guess we are going to find out!

..on not peeling the spuds before you mash them. Not something that I would naturally do, but as PP’s said, it’s actually easier, more nutritious and less wasteful, so I may stick with it.

Bluedeblue · 26/04/2021 16:26

Very first time doing Hello Fresh tonight.

I'm doing meal number 24 : Cheese & Caramelised Onion Chicken with garlic mash and stir-fried green beans.

I have never heard of cooking mashed potatoes with the skin on. Learn a new thing everyday Grin

Bluedeblue · 26/04/2021 16:27

Okay, I will leave the skin on. Never done this before!

Aquamarine1029 · 26/04/2021 16:28

I never peel potatoes. The skin is what has the nutrients and flavour.

GillBungalow · 26/04/2021 16:28

The skin just breaks down into little bits, there's still loads more innards than skin so the finished mash just looks a bit speckled.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 26/04/2021 16:29

The skin just breaks into small bits, so if you like super smooth mash it’s probably not for you but personally I never peel because I’m too lazy

ShagMeRiggins · 26/04/2021 16:30

We call them “rustic” potatoes. Grin

But yes, it’s perfectly normal. My grandmother used to do it.

Leaving the skin on is very normal in other potato dishes—boiled new potatoes, jacket potatoes, potato wedges. Just depends how smooth you like your mash.

Breathmiller · 26/04/2021 19:03

It's delicious. I'm vegan so I use Naturli, soya milk and vegan mayo but you could obviously use dairy versions. My lot all love it. Makes it really creamy. I have also been known to add in a tin of sweetcorn.
Dozer · 26/04/2021 19:04

More nutritious with skin!

Northernsoullover · 26/04/2021 19:05

I call them smashed potatoes. Don't mash fully. Use half a pound of butter too. Well, maybe not half a pound Wink

Delatron · 26/04/2021 19:09

Yes I do ‘crushed potatoes’ with skins on. I can’t actually do them the other way, they always turn out wrong.

thiswaythat · 26/04/2021 19:12

Joel Robuchon makes mashed potatoes by boiling the spuds (la ratte variety only) skin on, then peeling. This way they aren't watery as the skin stops the spud from soaking up the water. Robuchon ratio of potato to butter is 2:1 but this makes them the best mash potatoes in THE WORLD!

picklemewalnuts · 26/04/2021 19:14

What did you think, Blue?
We had it today, too.

dudsville · 26/04/2021 19:14

I never peel potatoes for anything. It's not lazy. It's where so much of the goodness of a 🥔 resides. Same with 🥕, 🍎, etc
