The best coastal town to live in?

Bookaholic73 · 26/04/2021 16:12

DH and I are considering a move. We’ve both lived in the south west, in a small market town that we love. But we would love a change.

I WFH and he works in healthcare so could find a job in most places.
Ideally we would be coastal (but not still in the south west) with good train links to a city.

I know that sounds very vague, but we are just curious at this point.

I've always liked Dunbar

Not that long ago I read an article about this www.thetimes.co.uk/article/why-tynemouth-tyne-wear-best-place-to-live-uk-vn5m039hf

Tynemouth! Or Whitley Bay.

Ryde
its 20 mins on the Fastcat to Portsmouthor 13mins on the hover (and of course we have a hospital ans other NHS services here on the island to) loads of people commute and you get island resident tickets .

Housing is cheap compared to most places in the south

or Cowes ...but its more expensive (due to it being a sailing town and a lot of second homers) and has no real beach .. Ryde beach has sands and the town shops / restaurants etc are nicer

Portobello. We'll it's a suburb to be honest. Central Edinburgh a bus ride away.

Laska2Meryls · 26/04/2021 20:15

Cowes has Red jet to Southampton about 25 mins and a free bus from Southampton ferry terminal to station.. its the quickest way to London by train

Lived on Iow many years. Cowes is busy, not a village coastal seaside feel.

Anywhere with year-round industry. A seaside town that only has summertime income is not, in my opinion, ideal, unless it's a very wealthy area generally.

MissyB1 · 27/04/2021 08:19

I don’t like cold wet weather so I would be heading more South East as I tend to think it’s a bit drier and often warmer. So I would be looking at Kent seaside towns. Whitstable is apparently lovely but £££ Deal would definitely be worth a look too.

I came on to suggest Ryde, but see I've been beaten to it. The beach is beautiful. Fast ferry to the mainland and even a trainline to take you further inland. Some beautiful houses too.

Leigh-on-sea - got a choice of train links and wide range of house budgets.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 27/04/2021 20:32

@Eve I'm partial to a bit of Barry's myself! I'd love a house on Causeway St backing onto the beach Grin

PicpoulDeMeNay · 27/04/2021 20:34

Tenby.....or anywhere in Pembrokeshire to be honest

SuziQuatrosFatNan · 27/04/2021 20:35

Blackpool

Antibes is quite nice.

Though if in the UK I agree with the sentiment about year round industry.

Have you any children OP? That are not adults and so schooling is not an issue to consider.
