The best coastal town to live in?

Bookaholic73 · 26/04/2021 16:12

DH and I are considering a move. We’ve both lived in the south west, in a small market town that we love. But we would love a change.

I WFH and he works in healthcare so could find a job in most places.
Ideally we would be coastal (but not still in the south west) with good train links to a city.

I know that sounds very vague, but we are just curious at this point.

@BadEyeBri I'm going to have to go and investigate what's actually happening with Barry's now...

would be a shame it it was lost - so iconic!

Even now as an adult of a certain age I will insist my teenagers all go on the bumper cars so I get to go as well!

Portrush.
Prestwick.

I'm fascinated by all the suggestions for Deal. Why?? Living in Kent, it's one of the few places we didn't look at when buying because it's so inconveniently located for getting inland. I assume it's the natural progression after the gentrification of Margate? But at least Margate has lovely sandy beaches. Deal has... Not much.

Prestwick is lovely. Just along the road from here. Good train links to Glasgow, Prestwick Academy is a decent school. It still has a wee bit of a village "feel" to it.
The surrounding towns aren't great, though. There is a huge amount of deprivation in Ayrshire. Troon and Prestwick are the "posh" bit.

Bournemouth is best! Obviously biased .Lots of nice suburbs .Do avoid Boscombe at all costs though .Lots to do here ,good train links to London .Short drive to New Forest .

It depends what your criteria is I guess. Deal is AMAZING for food: loads of independent delis, restaurants, the Rose hotel, pop-ups, the Saturday market. Lots going on culturally: the music festival, stuff on at the Astor, the independent shops ... Close to lots of other nice places in Thanet, like Margate Smile. Big blue skies, lots of dogs Grin, the sailing club .... just a few things that came to mind.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
I looked into Pembrokeshire and it looks beautiful.

Are the beaches there any good for surfing? My son would be moving with us and is a big surfer.

I suggested Pembrokeshire 😀

You can surf at Freshwater West near Pembroke, and at Newgale near Haverfordwest. There’s lots of other beautiful beaches too - check our Barafundle. My fave beach ever!

Hastings

noideabutstilltrying · 29/04/2021 22:30

Along the North Norfolk coast is beautiful. Sheringham, cromer, Wells and Mundesley all have beautiful views and aren't far from Norwich which has a good selection of shops.

I also love Aldeburgh but a 2 bed flat there was going for £450,000 recently 😳

Pin Mill isn't coastal but it is so peaceful and it's tiny on the Orwell

Another vote for Deal, Kent.
Kingsdown and Walter nearby are lovely too but very quiet.

WanderingFruitWonderer · 30/04/2021 11:08

Another vote for Hastings and St Leonard's. Especially if you're arty. I absolutely love it here...

BikeRunSki · 30/04/2021 11:11

I’d happily live in Tynemouth.

Broadstairs if you want Kent.
