'You do you'

Why are so many posters using this phrase lately? Is it from a film or TV show? Is it the new 'be kind' that some people mindlessly seem to be compelled to write on various threads?

UnforgottenPunk · 25/04/2021 22:51

I literally detest this phrase. It's normally arrogant feckers who use it as a get out for excusing their own behaviour.

OppsUpsSide · 25/04/2021 22:54

It’s basically a new age saying for modern Hyacinth Buckets. It’s a ‘smooth’, smug way of trying to make someone seem silly.

CeibaTree · 25/04/2021 23:03

If just seems such a pointless and vacuous thing to write and doesn't ever add anything to a thread!

OP posts:
Maggiesfarm · 25/04/2021 23:06

I've never heard it, please give context in a sentence.

Mumblechum0 · 25/04/2021 23:11

I keep seeing it on here recently and wish it would stop.

I presume it means, do what you want, but not sure.

Why do people not just speak properly? [old person here]

AntiHop · 25/04/2021 23:12

That phrase really gets on my nerves.

Frogartist · 25/04/2021 23:14

I have also never heard anyone use the expression "doesn't sit well with me " in real life!

IceFemonLanta · 25/04/2021 23:14

I take it to mean like the Scottish Did ye aye, did ye ? Complete with sarcasm and raised eyebrows.

madroid · 25/04/2021 23:14

You do you = you be your your weird/stupid/senseless [insert other implied derogatory judgement] self and mind your own business (therefore allowing me to do me)?

It's very irritating!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 25/04/2021 23:14

I like it. A succinct way of telling people to mind their own business instead of minding mine!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/04/2021 23:15

@Maggiesfarm

I've never heard it, please give context in a sentence.
"I mean, I wouldn't think it was ok to spend £75k on a wedding I couldn't afford, and then ask for cash contributions to the honeymoon, but you do you hon."
Chatanooga1 · 25/04/2021 23:16

I hate trite phrases.

I unfriended anyine on Facebook who had a ‘Be Kind’ framed added to their profile photo as well as any other kind of statement.

campion · 25/04/2021 23:19

It's the opposite of succinct if people don't know what it means.

BackforGood · 25/04/2021 23:24

Oddly, I'd never seen / heard it until about 10 minutes ago, then seen it twice in the last 10 mins.
Made no sense whatsoever.
I presumed a poster had pressed 'post' too soon by accident.

ILovesPeanuts · 25/04/2021 23:25

To me it means "I'm an unreasonable person but let's not worry about that". It is a mind your own business phrase but generally used to brush
off a reasonable concern stated by someone else IMO.
I hate it.

Unihorn · 25/04/2021 23:25

It's from 90s/00s rap as far as I'm aware so definitely not a new phrase. I think it's been used more often in the past five or so years but definitely not new.

CeibaTree · 25/04/2021 23:27

@MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously

I like it. A succinct way of telling people to mind their own business instead of minding mine!
But why post it on a thread where someone is specifically asking for advice on their life - what's the point?
OP posts:
Unihorn · 25/04/2021 23:28

I also only hear people use it ironically in real life. Someone might say something along the lines of wanting to run away and live on a tropical island somewhere, and someone would respond "you do you". I don't know anyone who uses it in a 'living your best life' way!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 25/04/2021 23:34

OP, I probably wouldn't post it on a thread where someone was asking for advice, but there are some threads where the poster is being so unreasonable or refusing to listen to good advice or just generally being arsey, that 'you do you' is a way to shut them down or just show disapproval. I think a lot of the time it's use depends upon the tone of the thread and the attitude of a poster.

I think you've just summed up what it is about the phrase that annoys me, at least the way I've seen it used on threads of late - it's such a kind of 'mean girl' expression. Why do people want a 'way to shut them down or just show disapproval.' Why not just scroll on by? It's just so snide and unnecessary (to me anyway!).
OP posts:
rarat · 25/04/2021 23:54

It's like Be Kind in that Be Kind means let me act like a dick but don't criticise me. You do you = if I'm acting like a dick, mind your own business.

The most irritating thing is though that people that spout the above are the least likely to be kind & mind their own business.

Divineswirls · 26/04/2021 00:00

I find it's usually said by slightly dim, slightly chavvy types of people who obsess a lot on the cleanliness of their homes. I could be wrong.

SionnachRua · 26/04/2021 00:12

It's said by snide dicks who want to act superior on here. Hope that helps is another one, especially when written HTH. The sign you're dealing with a gimp.

rarat · 26/04/2021 00:13

I never knew what HTH meant!

ExhaustedFlamingo · 26/04/2021 00:24

I quite like it tbh. Obviously I'm in the minority of this thread is representative of opinion.

The way I've usually seen it used is where one person is being an unreasonable nob and refusing to consider an alternate view, and another person is trying to make them see that perhaps the rest of the world doesn't share their view.

For example:

" I don't why people can't be bothered to wipe their skirting boards down every day, they're just so lazy! I couldn't sleep if mine hadn't been done."

"Well, maybe they just don't have the spare time but you do you."

I'm not normally a fan of trendy phrases - "be kind" makes me eye-roll as if I'm demonically possessed - but I do quite like this one.
