'You do you'

Why are so many posters using this phrase lately? Is it from a film or TV show? Is it the new 'be kind' that some people mindlessly seem to be compelled to write on various threads?

I always thought it was more supportive than derogatory!

Me too.

That reminds me of a thread I read ages ago where the poster's parents had thought LOL meant 'lots of love' and had been using it in inappropriate situations! I don't think anyone saying 'you do you' means it particularly kindly, it's a way of saying 'wind your neck in' 🤷🏻‍♀️

Urban dictionary's top definition is:

'1. the act of doing what one believes is the right decision, being oneself'

Their third is:
'Millennial way of passive aggressively telling someone to go fuck themselves,' which seems to be the definition lots of posters on here are using.

Maybe it's used in more than one way. 🤷

Didn't David Cameron think it meant this as well? Sure I heard it said.

The only person I have ever heard say it in real life is my yoga teacher and she frequently says things like “if a headstand or crow is in your practice then take it now, otherwise you do you and we’ll meet back in that yogi squat” or “you do you for the next couple of breaths, you can vinyasa, take a child’s pose or go straight to down dog”
I’m really hoping she means it kindly Grin

SilenceOfThePrams · 27/04/2021 13:25

I’ve never thought it might be derogatory. I’ve only intended it/received it as “don’t worry about what you think other people think you should do, do what’s actually right for you.” But more succinctly. Sort of more modern version of “To thine own self be true.”

DrunkenKoala · 27/04/2021 14:44

I thought the saying was “you do you and I’ll do me” and it was a way of telling someone to back off and mind their own business. I have said this to an interfering family member - she was pressurising me into buying something I didn’t need or want and saying that shut the conversation down.

Seriouslymole · 27/04/2021 14:53

I really never took it to be derogatory! Totally lost on me.

I use “it is what it is” alllllll the time IRL. It means nothing other than “well it’s a bit shit, and I wish it weren’t like that but it is and I have to get on with it”. I find “it is what it is” quicker to say but encapsulates everything. I’m sorry if it offends others but hey - you do you.
