When did you stop washing baby clothes before use?

Exactly as the title says, really. I’ve searched other threads and can’t seem to find the answer (neither can Google, it seems). I know some of the chemicals used in manufacturing can be harmful to babies’ skin, but at what age does this pose less of a risk and washing isn’t necessary? Thank you.

I can’t actually remember but I think I figured once they were crawling and licking floors that their risks from clothes were minimal. That said I think most of ours were second hand and hand-me-downs so I did wash them.

wonderstuff · 23/04/2021 06:37

As soon as she arrived I think! Never had a reaction.

TrashKitten10 · 23/04/2021 06:39

I generally wash all our clothes before they're first worn in this house 🤷🏻‍♀️ So really there isn't an answer, it's up to you. If your little one is prone to sensitive skin and it's not a massive hassle then keep washing them. If their skin doesn't tend to react and you find it a nuisance to wash them before use then stop :)

I do it for all clothes, one of my teenagers does have sensitive skin and comes out in a sort of prickly heat rash if I don't. I'd rather get rid of the chemicals and dust for myself too.

Mumof1andacat · 23/04/2021 06:45

I never washed them before they were worn.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 23/04/2021 06:46

On my second child😂

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 23/04/2021 06:46

In another example of my deficient mothering I didnt even know you were meant to do that. My children are older now so maybe it wasn't a thing when they were born but I have to say I probably wouldn't have done it anyway unless there was a skin issue. Are they allowed to sell clothes with harmful chemicals on?

howdidigettobe50something · 23/04/2021 06:47

...never started...and never a problem.

BearGum · 23/04/2021 06:53

I wash most of our clothes before they're worn (at least ones that go next to the skin, perhaps not jumpers?).
Not because of manufacturing chemicals but because of the filthy environment that most clothes are made in. Think of footage you've seen of clothing manufacturer factories in Bangladesh etc and how many people will have touched your new item while it was being made / packed.

Ragwort · 23/04/2021 06:55

Never washed clothes before they are worn ... occasionally if they come from a charity shop but not always Grin .... Mumsnet seems obsessed with washing.

NotJustAnyOldDog · 23/04/2021 06:56

It’s rare for me not to wash clothes before they are worn for everyone in our house, having worked in shops and seen warehouses and the way clothes are treated. Plus they have a horrible chemical smell and are all stiff.

Babysharkdododont · 23/04/2021 06:56

I wash mine still, I'm 39 Grin.

Clementine8 · 23/04/2021 06:59

With the latest child I am still washing them prewear at 12 months. He has terrible eczema though.
For the oldest probably after the first month.

Jobsharenightmare · 23/04/2021 07:00

Sensitive skin has carried on for step daughter so forever. In general though I think it really depends on whether your baby actually has sensitive skin or grows out of it like most babies do.

Toottootdrivers · 23/04/2021 07:01

I think I did it when I was packing my hospital bag. Never did it once DS actually arrived!

JennyBond · 23/04/2021 07:01

I probably wouldn’t have been bothered from about 2. But I get a lot of the kids clothes from Next and they absolutely stink when they arrive so they always get a wash.

SkankingMopoke · 23/04/2021 07:04

As soon as DC1 was born. The first size was washed and put away ready for her arrival, but after that everything went from shopping/delivery bag straight into the wardrobe.

toomuchfaster · 23/04/2021 07:07

I always do for DH and DD as they have sensitive skin. Not always for me, depends on the item so definitely knickers.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 23/04/2021 07:14

I didn’t wash them before they were born and all were absolutely fine.

BertieBotts · 23/04/2021 07:15

Never started. Never had an issue :)

rainbowthoughts · 23/04/2021 07:21

About 30 years ago I was in Littlewoods and watched a woman sneeze into her hands then wipe said hands onto a jacket. Since that day I have washed every item in new clothing to enter the house. People are vile.

Sauvignonblanket · 23/04/2021 07:26

I wash all new clothes before use after reading something about all the chemicals in the manufacturing process.

ufucoffee · 23/04/2021 07:31

Never washed them before use and never wash my new clothes before wearing. All of us are still alive.

minniemomo · 23/04/2021 07:33

My mum washed dd1's newborn clothes, didn't wash anything else. Dd2 mostly wore hand me downs but I didn't wash anything I bought new

vampirethriller · 23/04/2021 07:40

Never started.
