Toddler wore my glasses and now I am worried

My dd(3) briefly put my glasses on (about 5 to 10 seconds I guess but not sure) and I am so so worried if she would have damaged her eyesight because if this and would need to wear glasses Sad. I remember I used to do this for fun when I was a young child and since my teenage years I've had to wear glasses. None of my family wore glasses until they'd passed their 40s. Now I am worried if my dd would have to wear glasses be because she wore my glasses for a few seconds. An optician at specsavers once told me that a child's eyesight can get damaged if they wear glasses when they don't need to. I am freaking out now. I don't know why I am posting tbh, I am in tears now because of this. I hate and always have hated wearing glasses and the one thing I don't want for my dd is glasses. Does anyone know how long after wearing glasses does a child's eyesight get damaged?Sad

I’ve worn glasses most of my life. I’ve had friends try on my glasses and nothings happened. More and more chidren wear glasses now it really isn’t the end of the world. Particularly, in secondary school most had reading glasses.
You should complain about the paper clip incident to stop it from happening to someone else.
I don’t wear contacts, but I thought you can’t swim or get water into them? You can get bacteria into it causing serious problems?

Don't worry Ive been in your shoes when my kid just kept taking my glasses no matter how much I tried to hide it. Her eyes are fine

murbblurb · 17/04/2021 14:51

Oxygen to the cornea is an issue, or rather was with the old style of hard lenses. I had gas permeable contacts for that reason around 25 years ago. They were brilliant but eventually I had to switch to soft lenses, the optician said you only get around 20 years with hard lenses. Still using soft lenses, they don't have the 'bandage' effect so my prescription got worse as my cornea changed shape but there you go.

Glasses can improve a child's eyesight if prescribed theraputically. they make no difference to an adult. I suppose the wrong glasses could possibly change a child's eyesight but not in ten minutes or even ten days.

WaltzingTilda · 17/04/2021 14:53

@TooMuchAndNotEnough Thats reassuring to hear. Well , that was his examination. Then he said I had a deteriorating retina and not to do high impact sports etc . I didn't question the clip examination tbh. If I was then the person I am now I would have definitely questioned and/or refused this. I went there alone and given that it was Moorfields I assumed thry knew what they were doing. Maybe they did -who knows.

It doesn't really matter to me anymore. I just don't want my dds eyesight getting damaged though my negligence. I just took my glasses off for a few minutes and a few seconds later it's on my dds face!

The question ‘ how long would wearing wrong glasses take to damage eyesight’ returned 27 million results in 0.27 seconds

The answer is a minimum of 2 days, more likely weeks.

underneaththeash · 17/04/2021 15:19

@WaltzingTilda they would have been doing a technique called ‘scleral indentation’ to check the integrity of the retina at it’s extremes. The instrument you can use t ok do it can look a bit like a paper I suppose.

Many very short-sighted have problems with the retina, as the eyeball grows, the retina becomes thinner and more prone to holes and degeneration.

The cornea also does need to ‘breathe’, the cornea requires oxygen to maintain it’s normal function. modern contact lenses allow significantly more oxygen through them then lenses years ago.

@underneaththeash thanks for that. When i found the test uncomfortable (I interrupted the test a few times) I asked him what it was just to double check that it is what I think it was and he even told me it was a paperclip.

underneaththeash · 17/04/2021 15:36

I suppose you could do it with a paper clip!

WaltzingTilda · 17/04/2021 15:53

@BillMasheen.. thank you so much for that. Ive clearly not typed in the right search phrases. That's so reassuring.

You'd have to wear them for days to damage your eyesight! OP I don't mean to be horrible but this is ridiculous, you need some help for your anxiety if this is how upset its making you. 10 seconds is nothing. If it was dangerous to your eyesight to try them on, poundland etc wouldn't be selling reading glasses and letting people try them, they wouldn't be allowed to.

WaltzingTilda · 17/04/2021 17:54

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut Fair point. I really panicked at the time. I knew MN would help me see sense.

Housewife2010 · 17/04/2021 18:03

I would keep your glasses away from your toddler simply because they can be easily broken by a child and it is such a pain and expense to have to have them repaired. Also try not to let your child pick up any of your negativity re glasses. If they need glasses at some point you want them to feel positive about it. I've had poor eyesight since I was 7. I had the hideous National Health glasses as a child and hated them. Fortunately children get vouchers towards glasses now and my daughter was really excited about her first pair of glasses.

WaltzingTilda · 17/04/2021 18:07

@Housewife2010 I will do, thanks 😊

I don't know why posters are telling you to seek a referral from your GP for anxiety. Very cruel.

You really can’t see why? It’s not cruel, it’s what OP needs to hear. Often people need to be told their behaviour is not normal and they need to manage it, and often this involves professional assistance. I’ve dealt with many patients where the most pressing g thing they really need sorted is the anxiety as opposed to the physical issue (which generally is not that bad but made bigger than Ben Hur in their heads). OP suffers this and also a fair degree of medical misunderstanding with most of the comments made.

Twistered · 18/04/2021 09:12

Ach leave her alone. She has a wee panic and sought reassurance from MN is all
