Will DH need a phone for track and trace (pubs/bars)?

Not sure whether to post in here or Coronavirus so opted for here for traffic.

Last summer when we went to pubs we were able to check in using my phone, but I keep hearing that this time around everyone in a group needs their own phone/app to check in, even if they live together. If you've been out this week, have you found this to be the case? There have been stories in my local paper about older people without smartphones being turned away from their local - not sure if this is government guidelines or just down to the individual business.

DH doesn't have a phone and doesn't want one - will be still be able to go to the pub (or anywhere where you have to check in)?

@MrsJBaptiste

Why do some people have no intention of ever getting or using the app? Did you never go out last summer? To a pub/restaurant/gym?

I haven't used it recently but surely if a pub asked you to sign in via the app, why not just do it?

Last summer you didn't need the app - we mostly just signed in on paper, and they only needed one of us to do so. Afaik this time around everyone in the group has to sign in individually. My concern was that it had to be done via the app as standard, and with DH not having a phone that would've been a problem. As it turns out that's not the case, so all's well.

Its quite upsetting to see people saying negative things about the OP having no friends

I agree. Depending on your circumstances it isn't always easy to meet like minded people.

We all have mobile phones in our house because organisations we deal with often text to confirm appointments - the GP, dentist, garage etc, hence my comment about it being unusual to not have one. There is no way I would want to be DH's secretary.

Do people who are Deaf generally have smartphones these days?

Comefromaway · 17/04/2021 15:41

I remember having our phone installed in 1980 We were the first in our street to do so and it was done specifically for my dad to be able to contact his parents to come look after me when my mum went into Labour.

I would have thought so because they much more than just a phone. They are basically mini computers these days. I think you can get speech to text software for phones now.

You can send texts to landline phones, if you have rhe right kind of phone.
@Boomchicka I assume that pub was breaking the rules. I thought they were being stricter this time round
I didn't give it a second thought until I saw this thread! I thought track and trace was for close contact indoors so maybe outside didn't count?

Brokenrecord3006 · 17/04/2021 21:40

@Boomchicka I've also not had to scan anything or give details and I've been to various places all week. Just turn up to pub, hover by the door until someone asks you what drink you want, wander off to drink it with friends. Job done.

Carbara · 17/04/2021 22:22

I don’t have any friends, and have one (awful) relative. Am I disturbing you? 🥴🤣

Yep same. Today I did have to scan a QR and give my name and phone number, Manchester city centre venue, then headed back to a smaller town pub and didn't have to. So 2/3 times I haven't had to give my info. It's a bit daft anyway I was sat on a table, outside, not allowed to stand without a mask, and with my own household, no track or trace necessary unless the bartender was licking my glass, which I doubt they would admit to track and trace!

The OP doesn't have a landline.

Today was a brilliant example of why I'm glad that both DD and I have mobiles. She went on the train to another town to meet a friend. On the way back she messaged me at 5pm to say she was on the train, then I got another message to say that the train would be late because there were cows on the line (the joys of rural living).

Then we talked on the phone and she said there wasn't going to be an other train until 7pm, then she messaged again to say that they were laying on a bus. The train takes 40 minutes. The bus, calling at every station would take upwards of an hour.

So in the end I got in the car to pick her up - using my phone as a satnav.
