How much of sweet stuff is ok?

I need to loose a couple of kgs and then maintain. I’m 5.4 with a small frame, so feel the extra kgs.

Today I’ve had
Breakfast:
Lots of black coffee
A slice of brioche
Half a delicious chocolate/almond croissant
Full fat yogurt with strawberries and banana
Handful of raw almonds

Late lunch
3 egg omelette with cheese and tomato
Homemade strawberry and tomato salsa
Homemade air fryer fries
Steamed carrots, peas and beans
Spinach
Coffee and a custard tart.
A very small piece of dark chocolate

That’s it. I won’t have dinner as I usually don’t.

Exercise - a one hour walk, probably 7,500 steps.

That’s too many calories I guess...? I usually do t have that much sugar but these days I am craving sweeties, maybe Covid stress?

It depends in what timeframe you want to lose weight. You won't lose it quickly by eating two cakes in one day.

I’ve tried to get back on track. I made salad for lunch and steamed carrots and beans. Took close to 45 minutes to prepare with all the chopping!

No doubt the calories with be high, with nuts and cheese and olive oil. And I’ve added oranges and apples and strawberries to the salad, so extra sugar there

Do a sugar/carb detox. Or do a 3 day fast reset. Have a look at Jason Fung's videos on YouTube.

It sounds like your Dh has a very sweet tooth too! Hopefully as he gets used to you turning it down / having a smaller portion he will adjust (though mine would just eat the surplus!). Can you get him on side to just buy pastries at the weekend (for example?)

You don't need to rely on eggs and cheese for protein even as a veggie.

Have a look at the Forks Over Knives website for good ideas for meals that don't use those, and at Dr Greger's "How Not To Diet" and "How Not To Die" stuff. The idea that we need a meat or animal product protein source at every meal is a complete fiction (and if you believe the vegan agit-prop on Netflix, one sponsored by the American beef and dairy industry).

I get protein from
Wholewheat toast with peanut butter (Meridian do one with no added oil or salt, it's absolutely lovely)
Adding butter beans or cannellini beans to salad
Scrambled tofu
Soy yoghurt and tahini mixed together, thinned with water to make a thick dressing, and drizzled over greens
Smoked tofu - honestly this stuff is amazing, low calorie, high protein, tastes gorgeous
Lentil chilli - particularly good with baked sweet potato
Chickpea "tuna"
Hummus
Adding edamame beans to stir fry or fried rice

If you tweak your OP day for similar but whole food plant based you get

Breakfast:
Lots of black coffee
Wholegrain toast with almond butter

Soy yogurt with strawberries and banana (full fat yoghurt per 100g: 61cal, 3.5g protein, 4.7 carb - Tesco "free from" Greek yoghurt no added sugar per 100g: 54cal, 5.8g protein, 0g carb)
Handful of raw almonds

Late lunch
Scrambled tofu with spring onion, turmeric, tomato, and a big pile of green leafy veg (spring greens are my fave)
Homemade strawberry and tomato salsa
Baked potato / sweet potato & hummus
Steamed carrots, peas and beans
Spinach
Coffee and
A very small piece of dark chocolate

I'd be cutting down on sugar/carbs before I worried about cheese, nuts and olive oil.

Carrots and fruit are all high in sugar.

Oh DH is the culprit! Ever since lockdown we have started having meals together and I’ve started having sweets just because he indulging. I still stay away from biscuits though (he scoffs them). It is cakes (and your username doesn’t help 😃) and fresh patisserie that are my weakness. To be honest, one fourth of an eclair and three bites of a brioche are not huge amounts of sweets. But having a small treat every day adds up!

My solution is to decouple from DH and have my meals separately.

I’ll eat at 10 and 4 pm and back to my Spartan meals of eggs, proper (not brioche) toast, steamed veg, salad and soups. And the amazing full fat sheep’s yogurt (it is made in a farm close by and we visit the farmer milking the sheep, and know they are treated well). And sweet cals only through fruit
And treat ourselves to meals together on Sunday with some goodies 😊

And to the pp who mentioned vegan diet, I love tofu. But I do want yogurt and in this case it is relatively ethical and very local, so hopefully a reasonable choice.

And the eggs are local too (mostly, unless I run out and get from the supermarket).

I adore peanut butter, I used to have it on toast along with some banana for breakfast. But cut it back because of cals.

Once this brioche is over, dh has promised we won’t buy more. 🤞
And my indulgence can be peanut butter toast on proper multigrain sourdough.

Oh yes as my user name implies I do love cakes Blush. Luckily my dp is a biscuit addict which I can give or take! Maybe you could freeze the brioche into slices and spread it out a bit more?

KarmaViolet · 19/04/2021 10:43

Oh, I wasn’t criticising your ethics! It was just in response to you saying you needed the eggs for protein - there are plant based alternative protein sources. But food shouldn’t be a penance. I never really liked dairy that much so I’ve been very happy to replace with soy yoghurt.

Sprining · 19/04/2021 15:14

@KarmaViolet, sorry, I didn’t think you were, but still a good reminder to aspire to be vegan. Thanks 😊

I’m not a great fan of dairy either, I can’t digest milk easily. But sheep’s milk yogurt and fresh sheep/goats cheese seems to be fine. I feel bad taking milk meant for their babies, but the sheep do look content and well cared for.
