How much of sweet stuff is ok?

I need to loose a couple of kgs and then maintain. I’m 5.4 with a small frame, so feel the extra kgs.

Today I’ve had
Breakfast:
Lots of black coffee
A slice of brioche
Half a delicious chocolate/almond croissant
Full fat yogurt with strawberries and banana
Handful of raw almonds

Late lunch
3 egg omelette with cheese and tomato
Homemade strawberry and tomato salsa
Homemade air fryer fries
Steamed carrots, peas and beans
Spinach
Coffee and a custard tart.
A very small piece of dark chocolate

That’s it. I won’t have dinner as I usually don’t.

Exercise - a one hour walk, probably 7,500 steps.

That’s too many calories I guess...? I usually do t have that much sugar but these days I am craving sweeties, maybe Covid stress?

keeping off the sweet stuff helps reduce your appetite also - keep it to once a week if at all possible - a treat isn't a treat if you do it every day. If it's every day it's just normal (speaking as someone who has lost 8 stone)

Sprining · 16/04/2021 13:13

I’ve tried to cut back a bit today. Breakfast has been 650 cals today instead of the 900+ yesterday.

I had - black coffee, a slice of brioche at 9 am and and then a couple of hours later -coffee with two walnut bread toasts with butter, cheese and tomato, one and a half boiled eggs and quarter slice of an individual portion of a veg quiche

It is a bit surprising to know it adds to 650 cal, but hey ho.

I’ll have another meal at 5 pm with a big salad and perhaps soup. Followed by full fat plain yogurt. To a pp, I just don’t like low fat stuff. It is sheep’s milk yogurt so quite fatty, but easier to digest I think.

I counted calories after Xmas to lose the 1/2stone excess, what worked for me was a slice of wm toast with honey at 8am (ish), a soya hot choc around 10am. Less calories overall than my previous option of cereal and a mid morning fruit and sugary snack, and the hot choc gives me enough energy for a hitt session at midday. I stuck to about 1500-1600 calories and lost 1lb a week but then I’m 6ft so might need more calories than a shorter (and lighter?) person.

I'm no expert but I've had great success with low carb.
The sweet stuff is giving you an immediate boost and then a crash so you're starving again.
If you could go cold turkey on the sugar and baked goods you'd feel much less hungry .
I've never had a sweet tooth , it must be hard if you love the stuff.

FuckyouCovid21 · 16/04/2021 13:57

I'd definitely keep the full fat yogurt, low fat/fat free yogurts tend to be full of sugar/artificial sweetener

Not if it's natural yoghurt - natural Skyr is an excellent source of protein and will help fill you up.
QforCucumber · 16/04/2021 14:09

Full fat foods are much better for you than their lower fat counterparts, fat isn't evil.

I have found I'm automatically cutting calories atm without even trying, instead of having 2 x crumpets with loads of butter for breakfast I now have 2 eggs scrambled with spring onion and feta.

For lunch a chunky chicken and vegetable soup , on it's own is filling enough. Previously I'd have 2 slices of cheese topped bread again with loads of butter.

This leaves me with around 700 calories for my evening meal, which is perfect, whereas before I'd eaten most of my daily allowance by lunchtime.

Sprining · 16/04/2021 18:22

I agree that full fat yogurt is remarkably satiating and yum!

I think skyr is naturally low fat, so it should be fine too? When I used to have skyr, I would add some pouring cream to it and strawberries for a dessert 😊 not quite in the spirit of losing weight though.

I’ve been thinking about carb. Being a vegetarian it is really quite difficult to go low carb. So I am trying to go low grain instead. While two toasts sound a lot for breakfast, they are sliced really thin as I like them crisp and that’s the main grains for the day. So no pasta or risotto or rice for the main meal of the day. Instead I have either egg and potatoes for the main meal or a huge salad and soup.

If I had eggs for breakfast instead of toast, what low cal veg protein can I have in my main meal?

Or should I have eggs for breakfast and for the main meal? That would be roughly four eggs a day

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 16/04/2021 18:53

Low fat isn't bad for you either - I eat high protein, some fat, some carbs.

How about tofu or chickpeas with your main meal? Things like soya mince or Quorn can be good. There are new veggie and vegan foods coming out all the time so worth checking what's out there.

Sprining · 16/04/2021 19:10

I really like tofu! And the silken stuff is easy to scramble. Thanks 😊

I’ve stayed at 1230 calories today according to MFP. Yay
Protein, fat and carb levels are good.
Seems like my sugar intake today was a bit high (wtf I hardly had anything sweet!) and iron was waaay low.

I feel virtuous and joyless at the same time 🤨

OP posts:
Passthecake30 · 16/04/2021 19:46

MFP is also good for tracking fibre. I would think you need the thin toast to get some of your fibre in?

Sprining · 17/04/2021 08:14

I weighed myself this morning and seem to have lost one kg. In a day???🤔

MFP said it would take 5 weeks of pretty much 1250 cal to lose 2 kg.

Anyway, I had coffee and sweet brioche and am off to do gardening. This whole diet thing is far to complicated and logging calories while eye opening (popping!) also seems to suck the joy out of meals...

Not that worried about fibre as salads seem to do the trick. I dread to log this in MFP though as undoubtedly the goats cheese, nuts and olive oil/maple syrup dressing will make it seem as a calorie laden decadence 😃

Most weight loss early in a diet is water. Stick with it, you'll be fine.

Sprining · 18/04/2021 07:10

Yes,l@MotherOfGodWeeFella. This morning I had gained that one kg back, even though I met the cal limit, more or less. I didn’t eat sweets after the morning slice of brioche. Well a very small half square of dark chocolate after lunch.

I have a headache this morning. Either sugar withdrawal or dehydration.

OP posts:
MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/04/2021 09:01

The brioche isn't great everyday tbh - it has refined flour, fat and sugar. Complex carbs - like wholemeal bread - are better because of the extra fibre. See how many calories are in the brioche and work out what you could have instead for the same calories.

MiloAndEddie · 18/04/2021 09:18

Don’t get sucked into weighing yourself daily OP, once a week is fine. You’ll see (potentially) big variations even in a day (I know I can be +/- 3-4lb).

I think that's for too much sweet stuff for 1 day. A treat is just that, an occasional indulgence, not several items a day.

If you want to lose weight, that is.

longcoffeebreak · 18/04/2021 09:41

I'm 5'3 and eat about 1800 calories. Eat that long term and your weight will sort itself surely

Sprining · 18/04/2021 10:33

Thanks everyone, it’s been a wake up call on how my sugar intake has been creeping up!

Dh picked up pastries and I picked up a wild blueberry sweet bread yesterday. Just because they looked enticing. Old habits die hard!

But...this morning instead of a slice of brioche (we still have over half left of the delicious loaf), I had one bite of my precious and then a small walnut toast with the rest of the coffee. Then went for a 30 minute walk to pick up some gluten free bread made locally.

Just had a small slice of that with boiled eggs, full fat plain yogurt (with strawberries, banana and hazelnuts). And another pot of coffee.

The thing is yesterday I didn’t have much sweets, but DH wanted to pick up burgers for lunch so I had a veg one (no bun) fried egg on top and ahem fries. And I made a homemade salsa.
Then for dinner I had two boiled eggs and sautés potatoes, spinach and bell pepper.

And bloody MFP said I was within my cal limit but I had too much carb!!! DH call it my nag-app 😃

Here is the eclair DH bought yesterday. I’m not sure I can resist a piece!

I caved in and had some brioche 😱

Like one of the pieces at the end. The rest DH had.

I had done lots of gardening and hadn’t made lunch and was a bit peckish. Am I doomed?
