What strange thing made you feel like an adult?

I have just been insured on my DH's car and now I feel like an adult! I find this slightly bizarre seeing as we have 2 children, have been married for ages and have bought and sold 4 houses over the years!

What weird thing made you feel like an actual grown up?

Emailing the school about the DDs school bus days. Still seems extraordinary I'm responsible for coordinating two small people

passthegin1234 · 15/04/2021 14:53

I forgot to add that I have driven my own car for 15 years! Just the idea of being on his insurance made me feel so old.

@HeyMicky I can understand that. My are still small but I imagine having conversations with teachers might startle me too!

I think for me it’s having different types of glasses for different drinks - proper red wine glasses and mini glasses for port (clearly not an adult enough to know their names though haha!)

Buying made to measure curtains

My step kids asking if they could stay out to play until supper. It was aged ago but I remember thinking “I don’t know, ask a grown up” Grin

One sad, one happy.

First was attending a funeral on my own. It was my BFF’s Dad and so I went to support her but wasn’t part of the main group of mourners but she was the only one I knew. I was only 21 and it was a shock that my friend had lost a parent but somehow the act of taking myself to a funeral alone felt SO adult.

Second one is much happier and that was being approved by the RSPCA to adopt a pet. I don’t have kids so some other adult telling me that they thought I could provide home and care for a small fluffy thing was like a massive stamp of adulthood!
I still regularly freak out at the responsibility of having a cat 😬

Driving my DC to their sports clubs and activities.

Driving our brand new car for the first time. I’d never had a new car before, always old bangers and couldn’t believe I was responsible for something so expensive 😂

brokengate · 15/04/2021 15:16

Putting the washing on early or night before so I can hang it out before we go out. That's my dads job! Gives me such a sense of responsibility and pleasure. Even though I'm 40. Will it rain, have I pegged it tight enough, will I remember to get it back in.....

Leaving the hospital after giving birth to my DS (I was 24)
All the way out to the car I half thought someone would shout me back and say I wasn’t qualified to take him home and there had been a mistake. Obviously they didn’t Grin

Piccalily19 · 15/04/2021 15:19

Ive always said the day I knew I was old was when a friend told me she was pregnant and my natural response was “omg congratulations!” Instead of “oh s**t... are you going to keep it?”

FizzyPink · 15/04/2021 15:19

My DP lived at home until he was late 20s due to his parents living in London. We now have a tiny 1 bed flat together and 3 years on he still sometimes says “I just can’t believe this is all ours and we get to live here alone” Grin

I moved out at 18 so don’t quite share his excitement at adulting

MrsTophamHat · 15/04/2021 15:20

Booking tradesmen. I feel like I need a grown up to deal with anything beyond basic DIY.

dobidobidooo · 15/04/2021 15:21

Setting up an investment account and talking to a financial advisor.

Puffalicious · 15/04/2021 15:32

Sad one, but my mam's death and despite being the youngest (at 41) being asked by older sibling to tell my dad that the time was nigh. Then looking after him in his grief- forcing him over for dinner, checking he was eating well.

That and having the updated, very frank 'the sex' talk with DS16!Confused

A lot of people come to me for advice now. Initially that made me feel like an imposter, but now I am able to see that I do have some wisdom and experience regarding some things. There are many areas where I know nothing/very little too, and I'm now comfortable to admit that as well. I don't let people infantilise me any more, they may know a great deal more than me about some things, but that does make me inferior as a person just in that field. We are just on different paths with different experiences and perspectives. I don't feel challenged very often, I feel curious. I think people, ideas, the world, it's all so interesting. That makes me feel grown up though, realising I can agree with people I don't like and disagree with people I do!

ChristmasFluff · 15/04/2021 17:45

I really knew I was an adult the first time someone assumed I was 'mrs'.

Northernsoullover · 15/04/2021 18:00

I bought my first washing machine last year. I have never ever bought new white goods or furniture. My sofas are second hand, my dishwasher was a hand me down. I bought my bed from gumtree and my mum bought my childrens bed.

Northernsoullover · 15/04/2021 18:01

I'm nearly 50 btw.

Heartofstrings · 15/04/2021 18:02

Owning grass

DappledThings · 15/04/2021 18:03

Hiring a skip. I said at the time it felt like the most grown-up thing I'd ever done, including being married and having a mortgage.

JWrecks · 15/04/2021 18:09

I've been an adult for decades, but what really makes me feel old is our new(-ish, about a year old now) toilet! It's soooo fast and efficient, I marvel at each flush. It flushes and refills the cistern so fast I checked to see that it was even working the first few times. I tell people about our fantastic toilet. Now that's what I call old and boring adult!

Probably the first thing that ever made me really feel like a proper adult was finally buying my dream kitchen appliance set, all matching.

That, and the time I fell over on my bike (totally unhurt, trying to show off in front of friends) and nobody else laughed! Instead they ran over and asked if I was hurt! It was just a minor thing, but I guess I was officially old enough to worry people. Booooooo to that one!

RuthW · 15/04/2021 18:09

When dh left me when I was 37. I grew up overnight.

Letsgetbizzy · 15/04/2021 18:11
