What spider is this?

Is it just a run of the mill house spider? Or some dangerous predator? It's currently hanging out in the bathroom and
I've convinced myself it's escaped out of a pack of bananas I bought from the market and is now lurking, waiting for the kids get in the bath before it strikes GrinShockWink
It just seems so muscly and evil looking!

What spider is this?

Looks like a false widow to me. They can have a nasty bite, so best to get it out of the house!

Kathulu · 15/04/2021 12:14

Burn your house to the ground, then you don't have to worry about it.

I would.

piggywiggy123 · 15/04/2021 12:21
Confused Eeek!! Just off to get the petrol from the garage and find some matches ....

I'd be out of there 🏃‍♀️

Springisspringing2 · 15/04/2021 12:22

Op it's a bit false widow.
They colonate and move quickly to establish. Whilst they may not be seen by some as aggressive, due to the large volume of numbers in the house... At this time of year they can get everywhere and this is how people get bitten, shoes, dressing gown etc.

We had an infestation and took them down, touch wood we have not seen one since. The bite they give.. Let's say I know 6 people who have had one or their partner has... All ended up on serious antibiotics... Nasty hole where bite was and hospital knew what it was straight away..

In short, they are non native and highly invasive.. They wipe out other native spiders... Kill them.

FromTheAshes · 15/04/2021 12:24

False widow. I usually relocate outdoors any wildlife that I find, but I have a kill-on-sight policy for these after my ex had an extremely scary reaction to their bite.

HectorHalloumi · 15/04/2021 12:25

In short, they are non native and highly invasive.. They wipe out other native spiders... Kill them.

And yet they've been here for hundreds of years. So leave the poor sod alone!

piggywiggy123 · 15/04/2021 12:45

@Springisspringing2
Will it not just find a window to walk out of back outside? It's gone now I just don't know where!

PussyCatEatingEasterEggs · 15/04/2021 12:46

It's a Hairy-Kneed Willy-Dragging spider.

Not to be confused with the Smooth-Kneed variety.

🕷

Springisspringing2 · 15/04/2021 12:52

Piggy not from my experience no.
When I noticed one in my house I suddenly saw them everywhere.. They love webs in window and have a distinctive messy Web, Google it.

Obviously it's up to you what you want to do but having seen pumped up stunt extra with huge muscles floored by the bite and worried he may loose his arm.. There's no way I could keep them in our house with small dc.
It's my job to protect them and as said, once they get a foot hold they seem to colonate very quickly.. There's usually a base, I think our base was the gas cupabed by front door.. Then in autumn they flooded in Shock

If you're anywhere in the SE then it's your duty to find it if it has Grin

before it comes anywhere near me

It will either crawl back outside or find a nook/cranny to find its home.
Just ignore it and it shouldn't bother you Smile

(No need for killing Angry)

niceupthedance · 15/04/2021 12:55

I found one of those in my shower hat one morning 😱

Springisspringing2 · 15/04/2021 12:57

.... Or crawl into your towel, or shoe, or dressing gown or bed... Or coat..

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 15/04/2021 12:59

You need to kill that when you find it or you will end up infested with them and their bites are nasty. Like rotting flesh, nasty. They seem to like to be inside where its warm so no it won't just wander back outside. I wouldn't be having a dangerous spider in my house, especially not with kids.

CovidCrow · 15/04/2021 12:59

www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-dangerous-are-false-widow-spiders.html

Article from the natural history museum.
'There is often hysteria surrounding these spiders, and they have unjustly earned a reputation for being a dangerous pest. But these spiders only bite when they feel threatened.'
'Often, the symptoms are no worse than the pain of a wasp sting.'

Springisspringing2 · 15/04/2021 12:59

... Or shower hat Smile

Springisspringing2 · 15/04/2021 13:00

Covid I've read that before and it's not representative of my personal experience...

EBearhug · 15/04/2021 13:02

Will it not just find a window to walk out of back outside?

Probably not - they're also known as cupboard spiders... for a reason.

CovidCrow · 15/04/2021 13:04

I often see one or two around the shed, never been infested with them and certainly never been bitten nor have my DC. That article says they only bite when threatened, so probably best to leave it alone or place it gently outside.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/04/2021 13:09

I don’t think it does look like a false widow tbh. It looks like a Lace Webbed spider to me. Due to the pattern on the abdomen....like this

What spider is this?
Springisspringing2 · 15/04/2021 13:09

Covid... However does a spider distinguish between being threatened or a human going near it via putting an arm into a dressing gown? Or leg in bed.. Or putting on a shower cap?
.
Have you searched and looked for more? You seem pretty laid back so I'm wondering what would drive you too?

piggywiggy123 · 15/04/2021 13:21

@MargaretThursday
No not SE, Rural area in North Yorkshire!

OP posts:
piggywiggy123 · 15/04/2021 13:23

@Judashascomeintosomemoney
Yes!! That is it, it's the same pattern!
Wow thanks!
Really didn't want to kill it as I normally let spiders just roam in here!

@piggywiggy123
