Weighted Blankets

Does anyone have one? Are they any good. Menopause has given me anxiety and sleepless nights - would a weighted blanket help?

Anyone?

I keep meaning to buy one as I have heard they are amazing. Hopefully someone who has actually got one will be along in a minute. I would be keen to see a recommendation!

AhmenGwendolyn · 14/04/2021 21:43

Yes, I have one, it's very heavy and keeps me warm, really warm, so I don't know if it would help with menopause.

You could sit calmly with it on the sofa reading before bed. I also find it easier to sleep with the blanket across the bed instead of a long my whole body.

Things to look for are, your weight v weight of the blanket and bear in mind, as they are so heavy they can't be washed so a washable cover is necessary IMO even though I sleep with it on top of the duvet.

When I looked so many seemed to be grey which I didn't want. Also what if I share a bed with dh or my 9 year old (still quite frequent!)

time4areboot · 14/04/2021 21:48

Yes I've got one - I bought it last July. I decided to get one after noticing that over the winter I slept better with 2 duvets - obviously that wasn't an option for the summer so I bought a "Jaymag" one off Amazon because it wasn't too expensive it was £55 when I bought it looks like its gone up to £66. I find I have a deeper more settled sleep using it. I'm glad I bought it!

Beamur · 14/04/2021 21:51

My DD sleeps better with one. You can get washable covers.
If you get hot at night you might find it less helpful.

Rassy · 14/04/2021 21:51

I bought one from Home Bargains for about £38. I use it when on the sofa while watching tv or reading. I really like it Smile. Is heavy though!

TerribleCustomerCervix · 14/04/2021 21:55

I have a Remy one which came with a washable bamboo cover. It’s actually not that warm- I still need a duvet over me, so it might be fine if you’re currently going through hot nights. I think it’s the ones with the minky or fleece covers that are super sweaty.

I find it helps me wind down- I didn’t notice I slept any better, but it does feel like a lovely even pressure which is very relaxing.

DH fucking hates it though, he keeps getting tangled in it

CombatBarbie · 14/04/2021 21:57

I love mine, I was bought an 8kg one for Xmas.... Weighs alot but helps so much with my PTSD night sweats.

swapsicles · 14/04/2021 21:58

A wool duvet might be an option, quite heavy anyway but also being a natural material won't make you sweat so much!
I'm not menopausal yet but did always get hot and sweaty at night but the wool duvet is amazing, I've only got a 10.5 tog and use it all year round.

MargaretThursday · 14/04/2021 22:00

I got one for ds at Christmas. He's quite fussy on bed things, so wasn't convinced he'd like it. He's not slept with anything else since, and sometimes drapes it round him during the day. He definitely sleeps better with it too.

kaleishorrid · 14/04/2021 22:02

A wool duvet might be the way forward

@kaleishorrid

A wool duvet might be the way forward
I thought the selling point of wool bedding was that it was light but warm?

I recently bought a summer wool duvet and there’s no weight to it at all, but that might be because it’s a lighter tog rating.

bobby81 · 14/04/2021 22:05

I love mine! Makes a huge difference to my sleep & I hate sleeping without it now.

FurrySlipperBoots · 14/04/2021 22:06

I absolutely love mine!! Only had it since Christmas but can't sleep without it now! Actually that's a bit of a pain, I do a lot of live in nannying and it feels daft hauling it about from place to place, but I really need it! It's a woven one so washable, more breathable and no irritating noise from beads moving about.

I have MS and restless legs and suffer with fatigue. I love mine. It's my favourite possession - literally comfort blanket.

dalrympy · 14/04/2021 22:09

I love mine. I use a duvet cover with it and on norMap nights it's warm enough on its own.

I find I'm less sweaty with it. Maybe because there isn't so much air circulating?

I got mine from wowcher. I got DD one from Simple Sleep which is also lovely

Elisheva · 14/04/2021 22:11

My Ds has this one www.onlinehomeshop.com/brentfords-weighted-blanket-quilted-silver-grey
I was very impressed with the quality, and as it’s only £20 you could try and see if it works for you.

TotoAnnihiliation · 14/04/2021 22:12

I love mine. I struggled with sleep for around 4 years, I had bouts of insomnia. Believe I tried everything, sleeping tablets, lavender spray, music, milky drinks. I bought the blanket in desperation thinking it would probably be another thing that didn't work.

To my amazement it does work. I've gone for 3-4 hours of broken sleep to getting around 6-7 hours. I feel like a new woman.

travailtotravel · 14/04/2021 22:12

I just popped a couple of normal light blankets over me to see if the principle works. It does. I just kept using the blankets I had already.

Spottysausagedogs · 14/04/2021 22:26

I love mine and recommend it to anyone who will listen! Got it a couple of years ago when I had some anxious times to get through and was surprised how well it worked, I went from sometimes not falling asleep till 4am, or waking in the very wee hours and not being able to get back off again, to just going out like a light and having a deep restful sleep. Magic. In fact I haven't used it for a while but I'm digging it out tonight as I've been early waking this week due to a bad cold and feeling anxious. I'll let you know how it goes, but I'm betting it will do the trick!
I got mine from amazon, didn't worry too much about the weight of it just vaguely followed the 10% body weight rule. I put it over my duvet but I would think you could just use a sheet under it if you're the type to get too hot, and maybe put it sideways across your upper body and leave lower legs out.

Dinosauraddict · 14/04/2021 22:29

I have the gravity blanket. Expensive but it works. I sleep under it every night!

Clevererthanyou · 14/04/2021 22:33

Mine is the heaviest one I could find and I can finally sleep at night (suffered from PTSD whilst asleep but it’s stopped entirely now). It’s like being hugged by a wrestler Grin

Insidelaurashead · 14/04/2021 22:33

I have a Brentfords one, 8kg I think. It says hand wash on a cool wash and after using for nearly a year (on top of my duvet so it doesn't touch me as such) I tried it in the washer on the coldest wash last week, thinking for £25 I'd risk it. It was fine and is nice and fresh now
