When, if ever, does the urge to have more children pass?

We have two beautiful children and although we'd originally talked about two or three we've decided to stop here for various reasons, mostly practical

I've read here that the urge for a third does fade in time, when is that typically? I'd love for it to stop, because I have to keep reminding myself of all the sensible reasons why we've made a decision, or is that wishful thinking and I'll always feel a bit broody? Both DC are still small so lots of hormones I think

No need to tell me to enjoy the kids I have - I absolutely do and thank my lucky stars every day!

I was desperately broody after 2 and it got worse when dc2 started school. Number 3 is snuggled up on the sofa with me now and I'm definitely done now, no more broodiness.

I desperately wanted a third, never happened. The desperation wore off during perimenopause, so for me late 40s. Still a faint regret but not a desperate longing.

My youngest was hard work from 3-6 years old, so broodiness passed then.

Completely, utterly and actively happy we stuck at 2? When youngest was 8. Lots of friends have 3, but I don't have the headspace for a bigger family.

@Wheretogoontrip I have this too. My second is actually still only a baby but I get a pang for one more! I'm pretty resolved not to though as I think 3 would be a tipping point for me. I currently manage pretty well with two but I think on a practical level (when I consider age gaps etc...), I'd be run ragged by 3 with all their different needs. To keep my broodiness in check, I mentally imagine what my average day with 3 would look like and I get exhausted just thinking about it!

moochingtothepub · 13/04/2021 17:50

Hoping soon. I thought I was done 15 years ago but I'm massively broody despite having an amazing carefree lifestyle that would be altered irrevocably by another child. Thankfully my body clock has nearly reached the end of the road for this ship

My urge for a third lead to a third child but I know now I'm absolutely done. There is no desire at all for another child!

PolarnOPirate · 13/04/2021 17:58

I could have written that OP! We have gone back and forth on having a third for 4 years and we have finally decided we’re doing it. Absolutely won’t have a 4th - unless number 3 is twins which I’d secretly love!!! Will have a 6 and 4 year gap.

During my pregnancy with my 1st and only child. it was so awful that I never felt at all broody for another.

leftoverbeef · 13/04/2021 21:53

OP, I feel exactly the same as you. 2 wonderful children and I have a constant niggling feeling about having another. Whenever I hear that someone is pregnant or see things related to babies IRL I have an overwhelming urge to have another one. We are undecided yet but I think we will stick to two. I imagine I would feel like this even if we had a third though.

Blueskies3 · 14/05/2021 11:51

I am the same! I have two beautiful children and am extremely grateful to have them and yet desperately want another. We have decided no for practical reasons and I know that is really the right thing to do, but it is still hard! It is like I have to fend off an addiction and when the thought pops into my head, I remember how much I need sleep, or how much more I'd need to work, how we'd have to transfigure our house etc and it does help a tiny bit. Next step is therapy, seriously. I am a bit jealous of people having their third.

This thread is from last month but coincidentally it's just come up and I have had that urge feeling too. Just this morning I was fed up with my 2yo constantly trying to bf after a sleepless night and I spoke to DH about a second one as he wants one too but is leaving it to me when to decide. It's very hard for me managing the one right now but why the f would I want another one. Some things have got easier with my little one but to go through that again, I must be nuts lol.

I had four between the ages of 36 and 42. The relief of knowing I’d never have to do it again after the last one was immense.
