I finally gave in and bought a kindle. I have muscle problems with my hands and I found holding a book fairly difficult. But I got a kindle oasis and it is so much better.

But. I used to love hunting in charity shops for books or just wondering around the book shop. I will really miss that part of reading. Coming home to a book that I ordered in the mail.
I used to go to Waterstones and browse and then go to the cafe down the road for tea and cake and start reading.
Am I the only one ? To be honest I am not sure where I would have put more books if I bought them. But I will miss it just the same.

Sharing books.

waltzingparrot · 12/04/2021 18:51

You can still do all that bookshop browsing and coffee at Waterstones. You just come home and buy the books on Kindle Blush

StCharlotte · 12/04/2021 18:52

Knowing how far along in a book I am. The little percentage indicator just isn't the same.

Flicking back to recap if I've forgotten something.

I tried Kindle, I tried...

I was talking about this last night with DH funnily enough. I definitely miss browsing bookshops (although still buy books in them for the DC, cookery books too.) I really miss passing on a good book to someone else or vice versa. I also miss seeing the front covers of books! So often I'm reading a book and couldn't tell you what it was called.

However I'm a total Kindle convert. I love that I can easily read and change pages with one hand. I can read at night without turning the bedside light on, I can change the size of the text, I can download any book, anywhere, anytime. It holds a whole bookcase worth of books on it and the best feature for me is being able to tap on a word and see the dictionary definition.

I love real books, and I love my kindle. Both have their place, and I have been known to buy a real copy of a book I’ve loved.

The love of reading is improved by being able to read the font, adjust the light and actually being able to pick up the book.

But I also love the feel of a book and holding it. Plus it’s not the same giving up on a kindle book in exasperation as just quitting the book is not the same as shoving it back on a shelf.

ladymalfoy45 · 12/04/2021 18:54

You can still browse second hand book shops and check out Waterstones as well.
The brilliant thing about a Kindle is I have my library with me all the time.
If you pay for Kindle Unlimited you can borrow 10 books at at a time so for the price of a paper back once a month I can read 30 books in four weeks.
I still buy my favourite authors to build my library .

FizzyPink · 12/04/2021 18:54

My problem is that I forget which books I’ve read because I don’t have a bright shiny cover to associate with the story

AuntieDolly · 12/04/2021 18:54

Book shopping in the Chazzers for me too but I can combine Kindle & real books. I really didn't want to go all Kindle, but it really is much easier.

Seainasive · 12/04/2021 18:54

Yes scrolling back to double check something earlier in the book is almost impossible. Still love my kindle though and would be lost without it. I’m now surprised by how much a real book weighs!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 12/04/2021 18:55

I miss people knowing what I'm reading - all those conversations about books just don't spark in the same way, plus it isn't the same for making the teenager want to read new things because I leave them around the house.

Chasingsquirrels · 12/04/2021 18:56

Almost nothing.
I have read less than a handful of actual books since I got my kindle quite a few years ago, and those only because I was given them as presents.

TheMotherlode · 12/04/2021 18:58

I think the only thing I miss is being able to look back at earlier pages to refer to something, I was reading a book recently that had a family tree on the first few pages that was relevant to the rest of the book and it was a big faff to have to keep navigating back to it.

Otherwise, I love my kindle. Bought it 7 years ago and have pretty much used it daily since. Paper books annoy me now, they take up too much space in the house, are much heavier to carry around, and I can’t read them in bed without the light on.

Mmmmdanone · 12/04/2021 19:01

I never remember the name or author of a book I'm reading as I don't have the book cover to look at. I don't like not being able to flick through the pages to check something. But I do like the fact I can read in bed with the light off.

Fallstar · 12/04/2021 19:01

I love my Kindle but like previous posters I do miss flipping back to re-read bits. I also find I keep forgetting the title and author as I don't see the cover of the book every time I pick it up to read.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 12/04/2021 19:02

I don't have a kindle because I like to have a break from looking at a screen but I'm not a hoarder of books either. Pass them on to friends, charity shop, or give them away in a box on your front door step.

Bohemond · 12/04/2021 19:07

I’m pretty sure I’m sleeping much better since ditching the Kindle and going back to real books. I also enjoyed searching out second hand book shops/book swaps when travelling while much younger. No need for those in the current generation which is sad.

PrincessTuna · 12/04/2021 19:10

I have come full circle. Bought a kindle, thought it was great, then went back to proper books.

I still have a kindle and would take it on holiday for reading backup but I much prefer a book for all the reasons people have mentioned.

I like @ElizabethinherGermanGarden point about having a teenager pick up a book cos it happens to be there. I remember being bored witless on holidays etc as a kid and picking up left behind books and absolutely loving them. Such a special experience.

RaininSummer · 12/04/2021 19:10

The covers and passing the book onto family and friends

MouseTheDog · 12/04/2021 19:14

I had a kindle but went back to real books. I think the charity/second hand shop/library experience is a massive thing for me. I also love having books in the house/as presents etc.

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2021 19:19

Flipping back to check something, and basically the feel of books, the different fonts, covers.

NotMeNoNo · 12/04/2021 19:20

I love both but the Kindle wins out on - travel, not heavy, can read in dark, can't lose place, instant gratification purchasing. Its not good for sharing, pictures, cookbooks or any book that's not a novel. Or avoiding Amazon Blush

emmetgirl · 12/04/2021 19:22

I had to buy a kindle a long time ago as I couldn't physically fit any more books in my house. I can't bear to get rid of them and have read them all more than once. A kindle means I can have hundreds of books with me all at once and so is great for when you go away. It's also great for those of us that are terrible insomniacs as I can read during the night without disturbing DP.

Iheartmysmart · 12/04/2021 19:23

I miss the smell and feel of real books and have to confess that I quite often forget the title of the book I’m reading because I can’t see it if that makes sense.

I don’t miss nodding off reading and being rudely whacked in the face with a hardback book though.

Seainasive · 12/04/2021 19:25

I actually quite like it that people can’t see I’m reading something less than highbrow sometimes Blush

MargosKaftan · 12/04/2021 19:29

I do love real books, but the kindle is easier for lugging about, and I realised as I enjoy the experience of reading more with a real book, I have less reading experiences as I dont take the books im reading with me everywhere and read when I have an empty 10 minutes (like waiting for an appointment or sat at the park while the dcs play).

I find its hard to read any sort of historical drama type book on a kindle, as usually there's a family tree ill need to refer back to regularly as I'm rubbish at working out who's who. I also like a good map /floor plan in books and it annoys me on the kindle to not be easily able to just flip back to see that the library was next to the side door and someone could slip out without being seen by someone in the main hall....
