What do u miss using a kindle?

I finally gave in and bought a kindle. I have muscle problems with my hands and I found holding a book fairly difficult. But I got a kindle oasis and it is so much better.

But. I used to love hunting in charity shops for books or just wondering around the book shop. I will really miss that part of reading. Coming home to a book that I ordered in the mail.
I used to go to Waterstones and browse and then go to the cafe down the road for tea and cake and start reading.
Am I the only one ? To be honest I am not sure where I would have put more books if I bought them. But I will miss it just the same.

@Iheartmysmart

I miss the smell and feel of real books and have to confess that I quite often forget the title of the book I’m reading because I can’t see it if that makes sense.

I don’t miss nodding off reading and being rudely whacked in the face with a hardback book though.

All these things that we miss. It was hard for me to do but I had to. My hands are slightly better now. But I miss the feel of a book and as others have said seeing the front cover.

I also listen to a ton of audiobooks. That has been good as I can listen to them while I’m resting.

Apologies as I don't use a kindle but can you not bookmark a page so you can easily jump back to it?

I like both.

It’s like the difference between old school vinyl and all that music on my Spotify.

The books and the vinyl records are a lovely experience that involves all the senses, the smell, and feel in your hands. The artwork on the cover.

But it’s a pain in the bum if I want to go anywhere. As a really avid reader I was (pre COVID) revelling in actually having luggage that wasn’t just a big pile of books. Cos I have the 20 books i want to read on the kindle, I can go away with more than just half a Flipflop.

There’s Room in my life for both. Just in different ways.

I miss being able to tell how many pages I have left in a book. With a Kindle I seem to find they've shoved a chapter of the author's next book at the back of the book you're reading. The percentage indicator tells you you've still got 3% of the book to read, but that 3% is actually another book. You get to what you think is the final chapter only to find you have actually read the entire book.
That said, a Kindle means you can read books like The Goldfinch in bed without causing yourself an injury.

JaneyHenderson · 12/04/2021 19:46

Honestly nothing. I had a massive book cull when we moved house and only kept very beloved books, classics and a few key series for the kids - HP for example.
I like paper books for work (English teacher) because o like to annotate and highlight. Apart from that, much prefer Kindle.

I do however fall asleep with my Kindle (sometimes the only way I can nod off is to read to sleep) and have hit myself in the face several times. When I go to bed before DH, he always knows I am asleep by the sound of my Kindle hitting the floor😆

MrsTophamHat · 12/04/2021 19:48

I mix it up.

The charity shops and library both give me that limited choice that makes me take a chance on things I wouldn't normally consider.

The kindle is just so convenient. I can throw it in my bag if i'm using public transport or going somewhere I might have to wait around. I like that it syncs with my app on the phone. I think the deals are good. I like that it's so light so it makes it easy to read in bed or on holiday (remember those?!).

imnottoofussed · 12/04/2021 19:50

I miss checking how many pages are left in the chapter

reluctantbrit · 12/04/2021 20:02

I have a kindle for 5 years now and wouldn't want to give it up.

I love the convenience of it, I have a book always with me and so much nicer to read on a kindle than on a tablet or phone. I read a lot in bed and it means I don't need a bedside lamp on or lie awkwardly because of a heavy book.
And the freedom on holiday to just read books without worrying that I run out or have to buy expensive books abroad.

Saying that I won't use if for certain books. I love long family sagas and often go back and forth and I find this not easy on a kindle. For factual books it is even worse. Anything with pictures or diagrams is pointless.

If I am in the mood I still go to Waterstones and buy a book but it is 99% not a novel.

Kindle books are also not necessarily cheaper, especially children ones. DD's Kindle shares my account and I can move Kindle unlimited books over to her. But she prefers an actual paperback normally unless we go on holiday.

For browsing - check out BookBub and Goodreads, you can get email alerts for sales and read reviews/search for new books.

jilliwilliwoo · 12/04/2021 20:19

I take a screenshot of the cover of a book I'm reading and use it as my home/lock screen on my iPad

Pearbear · 12/04/2021 21:24

I bought my Kindle when they first came out about 10 years ago and switch between that and the app on my phone. I used to spend hours in Waterstones browsing and do miss that and seeing a book I loved getting worn around the edges and a bit tatty after being reread so many times. But otherwise the only books I have now are cookery books the rest are kindle unlimited subscriptions

BramStoker · 12/04/2021 21:29

I miss:

Knowing what the cover of the book looks like

I don't tend to easily remember the author's name for books I read on Kindle

You can't easily flip back to check things from early in the book: this is especially annoying if there is a map or family tree at the start of the book

normalsaline · 12/04/2021 21:39

Sniffing the pages! 🤤

StCharlotte · 13/04/2021 08:36

@FizzyPink

My problem is that I forget which books I’ve read because I don’t have a bright shiny cover to associate with the story
This too!

DH: What are you reading?
Me: No idea.

I came on to write this! The amount of times I've tried to recommend a great book, but couldn't remember what it was called or the authors name 🤔
Imtoooldforallthis · 13/04/2021 08:42

I too came on to say the cover as I can't remember titles or authors as I read such a lot. Also i end up downloading the same books again as it doesn't tell me I've already read a book.

MaMaD1990 · 13/04/2021 08:44

I love a physical book, nothing beats it. I especially love the smell of old books (weird eh?).

idontlikealdi · 13/04/2021 08:44

I used a kindle for years on my commute, easier to haul around then a big hardback and read one handed in a packed train. Since the commute has gone I haven't picked up the kindle at all an am back to real books. I do prefer them. The kindle will still be used for holiday but I can't see me going back to it now.

Throwntothewolves · 13/04/2021 09:18

I like both. I missed the physical feel of books, and as others have said, knowing how far along you are, flicking back to pages to check something and so on. Also swapping books with others (prob 'illegal' now anyway!) A kindle is great for taking on holiday though

proopher · 13/04/2021 09:23

Knowing what the book is called. I always forget the title because you can't see the cover and I have no idea if I've read a book until someone gives some detail about its content.

I've had to start a list to keep track Blush

HiGunny · 13/04/2021 09:42

I like both. Nothing beats a real book but the Kindle is so handy for popping in a bag, bringing on holidays etc. I love the dictionary function but miss being able to flick back easily to check something. However my biggest bugbear is the pictures/charts. I read a lot of history books and they usual have historical photos attached but I can't view them properly on the Kindle.

Blueberriesonmyshreddies · 13/04/2021 09:58

I have swapped my charity shop/car boot book hunts for free ebook hunts on Kindle. I type free books in Kindle search, sort by publication date and away I go. I have downloaded hundreds and hundreds of great ebooks that way.
I have also signed up to free ebook newsletter, they send a daily email with Kindle free and bargain ebooks. Sometimes there are absolute bargains sometimes there is nothing on offer for my taste.

I have to be careful though as I spend more time searching than reading if I am not careful.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 13/04/2021 19:13

I love my kindle much more than I thought I would but I miss the surprise of finding that a book has been type set in a really elegant font. Choosing a font on the kindle is not the same.

Chrestomanci3 · 13/04/2021 19:18

I find I forget the names of books I've read on the kindle. With a paper book, every time you pick it up, you see the cover - even if you are not consciously reading the blurb, it still makes an imprint in your mind. Some books have the title at the top of each page as well. With the kindle (much as I love it for it's ease and storage capacity), I can't tie together the story and the title. It makes it really tricky trying to identify a specific books if I only remember bits of the story. With physical books, I might remember what the cover looked like, or what kind of font was used. I find it very frustrating .
