If you could share one household tip/life hack, what would it be?

Mine would definitely be that drying clothes in sunlight gets rid of tomato/sauce stains. Am weaning my second child and it's a bloody lifesaver. No more soaking things for hours that still come out with orange marks on them.

What other gems are there that I need to know?

Instead of a kitchen bin have a standard sized plastic bucket in the cupboard under your sink and line it with small bin liners. We are a family of 4 mostly wfh and having most meals at home. Alongside the recycling and food waste bin we only need to empty this every 3 or 4 days and very rarely fill a small sized outside wheelie every fortnight. Kitchen bins waste floor space and look so ugly. The bucket doubles as the bucket needed for floor mopping (once per week).

@WorriedMillie

I clean the bathroom with a dishmatic thingy, filled with detergent
Love this!

Label kids favourite soft toys/comforter
WITH YOUR PHONE NUMBER
Finding a bear belonging to someone called "Peter" is of no use to anyone ever.

Kids don't need you at home, they really don't (obviously within obvious reasons...). Let them explore, play, learn to be independent. It pays off. Also saves you from living in a tip as you get on with things.

If something can not be immediately put away or pick up easily, you need to get rid of it or better storage.

Wash hair in fairy liquid. It takes off build up of shampoo/ conditioner/hairspray and stops it looking dull.

don't do that.

Thereoncewasababy · 12/04/2021 20:03

Baking soda mixed with toothpaste to make a paste, leave a few minutes then scrub off- cleans permanent marker off laminate flooring and biro off painted wood.

If you have the time dry the shower tiles each time you use it
It will stop the black mould building up and the need to re grout the tiles

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 12/04/2021 20:08

Make packed lunches the night before - saves a lot of stress at breakfast.

Train DC to put their own plates and cutlery in the dishwasher. As they get bigger, they can graduate to washing up anything that can't go in said dishwasher.

If you have a kingsize bed and therefore an almost-but-not-quite-square duvet, and this duvet unhelpfully gives you little indication of which edges are the sides (ours is stitched in squares, 10 one way and 11 the other, so not obvious unless you count), save yourself the hassle of ever putting it sideways into the duvet cover by taking a Sharpie to the little bastard. Write SIDE and END in the appropriate places all over it. I did this in a rage one day and it has saved me hours of frustration.

If you ever get a new kitchen fitted, include some small drawers for matches, elastic bands, painkillers, pens, paper cake cases and all the other small crap that you can never otherwise find.

battleaxe2000 · 12/04/2021 20:08

Oh spare hairbrush, hair bands, tights and tampons in the glove box, also non perishable snacks (sesame snaps/ granola bars).
@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie. Eggs definitely and bananas for us too. Kids go through so many!
Have you ever made an omelette with just eggs and bananas?

Thelnebriati · 12/04/2021 20:10

We use a window squeegee on the tiles after a shower, its quicker than a cloth.

Dandelion78 · 12/04/2021 20:11

@HollowTalk No, but I'm sure my kids would happily reject it along with most other things I make for them Smile

Prepare as much as possible in the evening for the next morning. Uniforms folded, underwear with it,school bags/sports kits packed, shoes at the door and packed lunches ready in the fridge. Takes a lot of stress out of the day.
I started getting up mins earlier, doing 10 minutes of yoga and having my morning coffee in peace. Makes a world of difference to me.
Everyone has their own mesh washing bag for socks and underwear. Whole thing gets washed and tumble dried, no need to sort out what belongs to whom, and no odd socks!

FelicityPike · 12/04/2021 20:12

@Bungalowlady

Don't spend a fortune on cleaning products for a textured wet room floor. Nothing bloody works Confused
Try the pink stuff paste, a scrub daddy then spray with pink stuff spray and a micro fibre cloth. I swear by the entire pink stuff range! (And the scrub daddy/ mommy sponges too)
Dandelion78 · 12/04/2021 20:12

@battleaxe2000. You are definitely more organised than me, but when I've remembered to do it, having a stock of spare birthday cards and stamps in the house has been very useful!

Meal prep as much as possible on
a Sunday.
Put the dishwasher on every night and clean the kitchen- empty when making your coffee/ tea in the morning. Much better to start the day with a clear kitchen.
Teach your kids early how to cook/ clean/ wash clothes Grin

Motorina · 12/04/2021 20:14

Sliced peppers freeze. So do chunks of butternut squash. So, it turns out, do onions and bags of spinach.

This means they don't go runny in the salad-liquifier drawer of your fridge, and you can tip then straight into curries for instant vegetable goodness.

I can't believe it took me so long to work this out.

Tashtegotoo · 12/04/2021 20:14

Write useful people's name/phone numbers on a postcard and put it in your car's glove box. If you have an accident and your phone breaks then you can still contact people.

This is from personal experience, when it happened to me I only knew my home number and one friend's home phone from memory.

impressivelycunty · 12/04/2021 20:15

Keep packs of wipes upside down - it stops them drying out.

silverbubbles · 12/04/2021 20:18

@Sarahlou63

Never go anywhere in the house empty-handed.
so true!
LemonDrizzles · 12/04/2021 20:19

one I heard on here, cleaning the bathtub whist having a shower - game changer

battleaxe2000 · 12/04/2021 20:20

From mumsnet years ago
Serve your DCs a raw vegetable starter before their hot food, they are much more likely to eat it than veg on tbe side of the plate. Worked for me they are now 14&17 and will make themselves raw veg sticks to snack on
