I'm interested in what has worked for people and what one thing might be the most important.

I'm not a fan of that as it's pretty extreme and doing the right kind of exercise means to don't have to go cutting out foods you like. Strength training using your own bodyweight and/or weights is very beneficial to women as weight bearing exercise helps strengthen your bones and we lose muscle over the age of forty - it's really important to maintain muscle mass as we age. If you build lean muscle, it raises you BMR meaning you burn more calories even when you're not active.

I mean low carb bootcamp, not hula hooping!

@adlucem

Weight lifting 3x a week. 10,000 steps a day. Hit my protein goal and generally stick to 1700 calories.
What type of weight lifting is effective?

What type of weight lifting is effective?

Effective in what way? Through lockdown I’ve done hiit with dumbbells increasing from 1kg to 5kg, plus body weight exercises. That’s given me really nice definition on my arms and my legs looks great.
In the gym I’d go a lot heavier than that with bar bells etc. You might want some sessions with a PT to get your form right so you don’t hurt yourself.
On a recent Michael Mosely programme about how to get fit, he talked about using light verses heavy weights. You can use both to increase your muscle mass as long as you keep going until you can’t do any more. That obviously takes longer with lighter weights.

Some of the machines in gyms are more targeted and can isolate the muscles you work which can be trickier to do with handweights/dumbbells. I'm talking about the weights machines, not treadmills and cross trainers. Also as a woman with a small frame and hands, once the dumbbells are heavier than about 15kg I find them hard to hold, never mind lift.
