Well I never knew that

I was just thinking about my younger years and remember my parents had a book of green shield stamps, i wondered if I had imagined these stamps so googled and it says it was like a loyalty scheme where you could spend stamps on products but it changed when Tesco withdrew and then it became Argos and money only, no stamps. I had no idea that Argos originated from Green Shield Stamps.

I am in my fifties so dont expect many of you to remember them

How interesting! My mum used to save GSS but I had no idea that that was the roots of Argos.

I am in my 40s and remember green shield stamps. I'm sure one of the local shops in our village had them and Dm had a book you stuck them in. I don't remember what she got for them though.

I do remember the Esso vouchers which were similar idea. Dm used to save up until she had about 30, and then we could take it in turns to choose something from the catalogue. I got most of my kitchen stuff for college that way.

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 11/04/2021 00:26

I remember these but I thought they were something to do with the co-op group some reason. I'm late 40s

SappysCurry · 11/04/2021 00:28

Co-Op used to give stamps too I remember them spilling out of the till when my mum paid for her weekly shop and my sister and i got tasked with sticking them in the books with a damp sponge ! They were blue...and I remember mum got enough for a vacuum cleaner

The Co-op had their own blue stamps
idontlikealdi · 11/04/2021 00:31

I'm 40 and remember greed shield and Esso stamps. We had a full dinner service from esso including the cabbage leaf glass bowls.

ImInStealthMode · 11/04/2021 00:35

Live in Jersey and our co-op still dish out stamps on 'double divvy' day! You lick and stick them to a card and when you have a full one you can claim the £s back off your shopping.

(Although they've cancelled them for the last year to prevent unnecessary crowding on those days of the week Sad)

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 11/04/2021 00:37

Can't remember which shops did them but I loved sticking the Green Shield Stamps in the book.

HarkAVagrant · 11/04/2021 00:37

We got our whole dinner set through green shield stamps. I remember the excitement when we got the gravy boat.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 11/04/2021 00:37

Weren't Co-Op stamps blue?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 11/04/2021 00:38

Sorry Errol you remember it too

Asposhasitgets · 11/04/2021 00:39

I remember Green Shield stamps and going to the shop where you redeemed them for various products (am late 40s). No idea if it was a special GS shop or an early Argos. I got my beloved ballet Sindy doll on one of those trips!

HarkAVagrant · 11/04/2021 00:39

Actually Argos is now in the same shop that was Co-op in the 70s in my town, so that makes sense.

Yes we’ve still got them here in Guernsey as well except not at the moment due to covid but always handy saving them up for a bbq or Christmas lunch!
Jenasaurus · 11/04/2021 00:41

Yes I remember the coop ones as well. Is there anyhing similar left today? I guess its all online now so no need to stick stamps in a book

ErrolTheDragon ill have to ask my mum what colour the stamps were. I thought 8 could remember them being green, but maybe not...

Mowly75 · 11/04/2021 00:49

Oh my god I had totally forgotten that these existed - my mum and gran collected the blue co-op ones. Amazing to remember this again

ImInStealthMode · 11/04/2021 00:54

@petridishmystery Hello friend across the water!! We're so jealous of your lack of restrictions, but we're getting closer.... x

Rosalisa · 11/04/2021 00:59

I remember those. They seemed so glamourous to me as a child.

My American partner tells me that Woolworths is currently Footlocker. I suppose the assets got diverted somewhere.

I am an oldie, so remember green shield stamps in the 60's era. My Mum used to save them, then she would get some really nice things for our house, much nicer than the plain and very ordinary cheap stuff we had as a rule.

She saved the Co-op stamps as well, and then when she had loads of them, she and many other women, had to go into town on the bus, and stand in a big queue at this co-op office place, and all get their Divie , I used to go with my Mum sometimes, it was quite an occasion for all the women, all standing around in the street, all deciding what they will do with all the money, and not tell their Husbands about it !

I am 79 now, and can still remember my late Mums Co-op divi number.

Torvean · 11/04/2021 01:30

My mum collected stamps from the Co-op in the 90s. Bought a dinner set with it.
