If you drink, do you drink every day? Every weekend? Do you think you drink too much?

Hi,

So I understand most people who drink have drunk more over lockdown, but just wondered how people actually felt about their drinking now.

How much do you drink and do you think it's too much? Or do you know it's too much, but don't really care? I have some friends in that category right now.

Personally, I know dp and I drink a little too much. Usually just Friday - Sunday (not constantly! 🤪) but I'd say we get through a couple of bottles each, so about half a bottle over the RWA.

It's our only vice though really, but I do sometimes worry and think we should cut it right back.

Anyway, just wondered Smile

At the moment consciously only drinking Saturdays and Sundays (used to be thurs - Sunday).

Will split a bottle of wine with DH each day. I’ve cut down to this mainly due to calories rather than anything else.

I unashamedly love having a drink and really look forward to it.

Elbels · 10/04/2021 20:02

Try to keep it to Friday and Saturday and probably have a bottle each over that time, maybe a bottle and a half if we have some fizz to start.

Elbels · 10/04/2021 20:04

And like @Chihuahuacat I also unashamedly love having a drink. Both of us can comfortably handle our alcohol and with that amount we're both up early the next day to exercise, do errands, etc so it has no negative impact on us.

Unlike all you pp, I drink every night not just weekends. Glass of wine with dinner, plus 2/3 g&t or whisky & ginger on Thurs, Fri, Sat.
More than most of my friends and definitely influenced by having young adults about wanting to watch films/play card games most nights this past year. Not that they drink much, but it's part of the ambience for me and dh. Can't work out what to drink non-alcoholic as dislike water and sugary drinks. Fake alcohol tastes foul. Suggestions please.

TheChosenTwo · 10/04/2021 20:09

I have barely drunk since last year, not consciously decided to cut down it just happened. It makes me feel a bit groggy the next day and I decided I hated wasting my Saturday morning in bed feeling weary.
Dh and I lived it up during lockdown 1 with the good weather, bbqs and beers aplenty but subsequent lockdowns not so much.
(We have both been at work throughout!)
I had a couple of vodkas last night, very weak, and felt fine this morning.
I’m going out running very early every other morning so that puts me off in wanting to drink too.
I’m a total binge drinker though; the minute there’s a sniff of sunshine and friends It’s all systems go and I’ll exceed the recommended units in one go!

sunshineandshowers40 · 10/04/2021 20:09

Far too much at the moment. Did dry jan but basically have at least one glass of wine/gin a night, more at the weekend. Need to cut down.

TheChosenTwo · 10/04/2021 20:10

For whoever was looking for a sweet drink, if you also like creamy drinks then I can wholeheartedly recommend the disaronno velvet, it’s like baileys but amaretto flavoured and it’s truly scrumptious 😋

Chamonixshoopshoop · 10/04/2021 20:16

Mainly drink on a Fri and Sat night. A bottle of wine to last the weekend.
I’ve cut back though, in lock down 2 I was up to half a bottle a night.
Felt a bit shit and that was motivation enough to limit my drinking.

Vooga · 10/04/2021 20:19

Just Friday and Saturday. Few glasses of wine of Friday, Saturday we make a cocktail and then have a bottle of wine with dinner, sometimes more if we're having fun.

I'm watching my weight and calorie counting so drinking everyday doesn't fit into that. I could easily have red wine nearly every night if I let myself, but I just don't. O just desperately look forward to Friday night from Wednesday onwards Grin

notacooldad · 10/04/2021 20:22

I had got into the habit of drinking most nights during the first lockdown but apart from Christmas day and NYE not had a drink since the beginning of November.

I used to be able to, but menopause changed me. As long as you can handle it, though, go for it!
GrouchyKiwi · 10/04/2021 20:25

I used to have a glass of wine most nights. Sometime last year I realised that I had been NEEDING it so I stopped, and now I have maybe one or two glasses a week, quite often none. If DH and I open a bottle of red with a meal then we'll finish it that night (2 glasses each).

So I no longer think I drink too much. I think I used to, or at the very least was dependent on alcohol if not an alcoholic.

LeggingWoah · 10/04/2021 20:26

I have one bottle of wine and upto 4 measures of spirits a week. I'm comfortable with that amount but over summer it tends to creep to culminating in several family celebrations in September and then again around Christmas it increases so I always always do 'Dry January' and 'Sober October' which I find resets me nicely.

Cam2020 · 10/04/2021 20:30

Sometimes a G&T or two on a Friday or Saturday night - sometimes both nights but I also go weeks without anything. I drink far less since becoming a parent! Drank way too much too often in my 20s and early 30s when I was a typical weekend night out/after work drinks binge drinker.

dotdashdashdash · 10/04/2021 20:31

Pre lockdown, probably had 2-3 drinks 1 night a month. Since covid, we've probably drunk 1-2 drinks 2-3 times a week but less since new year, probably 2-3 drinks 1 night a week now.

I don't have an issue with how much I drink. At the very most I drink I'm well within the recommended units per week and I've often gone a few weeks not drinking.

AlexaRain · 10/04/2021 20:36

We've been on holiday since Thursday 1/4, so have had more than normal. I've had 4 bottles of wine in 10 days - which is a lot.

Normal is one bottle of wine for me - half on Friday and half on Saturday. I make it into spritzers so it feels like more (but it's 9/10 units over 2 days). DP will get through 12 ciders over a weekend - about 30 units over 2 days. Not sure if that's a worrying amount, he's a big guy at 6 feet 3, so can drink more than me.

battleaxe2000 · 10/04/2021 20:36

I drink in school holidays only. Had a glass of red last night and a glass of white tonight.

Ideasplease322 · 10/04/2021 20:43

I drink one bottle of wine a week, spread over two nights.

I don’t think it is too much.

HighPressureDays · 10/04/2021 20:51

Before lockdown we only drunk on Fridays & Saturdays but during lockdown we’ve been drinking almost every night.

We’ve cut down again now so back to only drinking Fridays and Saturdays. We’ll probably share 2 bottles of wine over those days. Or he’ll have beers and me G&Ts. Although saying that last week we managed to drink half a bottle of Haig Club Blush

If I’m honest I’d like to only drink when we go out but I’m not going to kid myself!

blowinahoolie · 10/04/2021 20:52

I am usually tea total but DH recently bought those tiny cans of ready prepared cocktails from the supermarket. We share a can. I just don't care that much about alcohol. Firstly I have small DC that wake up 6am every day, secondly I like feeling fresh every morning as I am an early riser anyway and lastly I am trying to lose weight!! Alcohol doesn't help if you need to lose weight.

Hate these type of threads, it always brings out the "I have a thimble full of wine on my birthday, and a cheeky Bucks Fizz on Christmas morning and that's my lot."
OK, good for you, (seriously, not meaning to be sarky) but others tend to stay quiet for fear of being judged.
I have about 5 bottles of wine a week and I KNOW it's too much and have been doing something about it lately.
Mainly Netflix and book reading, but it's a hard habit to break lol

Oh, I used to be like that. No judgement here. It just got to be where I was dire the next day and then just didn't like the taste anymore.
wasthataburp · 10/04/2021 21:34

Last year we basically had a couple of glasses of wine each every night. Did dry January and carried it through until March to lose a bit of weight. We have cut back majorly now and just a Couple of glasses on a Friday and maybe one on a sat too.

TheVamoosh · 10/04/2021 21:38

I don't have any time of the day when I can relax with a glass of wine or whatever. I'm either talking care of my small children or sleeping. There's no time or energy left for anything else.

DipSwimSwoosh · 10/04/2021 21:42

1-2 glasses of wine 1-2 times a week.
