Undesirable holiday locations, please!

I’m far too scared to book a wholesome staycation in a beautiful tourist area, lest I be run out of town by angry locals; or refused service in the extortionately priced local farm shop.

So, I’m planning to go to places that are not holiday destinations, where they might be pleased people are visiting. Or, even better, not notice.

My sole requirement is a nice hotel.

Any recommendations?

I had a nice week in Cardiff once, stayed at a Novotel, not too expensive and had a great swimming pool sauna and gym. Lots of great places to eat plus shopping. There is the castle and coast line.

I’m with toffeenotcoffee Northumberland and also holy island where you can only visit when the tide is out it’s all beautiful. Yorkshire also wonderful, and the coastal places in the Lake District are gorgeous as well as the actual lakes but avoid the popular places they will be rammed go a bit offbeat where it’s quieter.

We spent May half term in Newcastle, and had a fantastic time! Paid £525 for 7 nights in a 2-bed apartment with private parking right by the Millennium Bridge, and it was the perfect base to explore the city, nearby castles (Alnwick, Bamburgh etc.) and beautiful countryside and coastline. I'd highly recommend it as it doesn't seem to have suffered the ridiculous price hikes seen elsewhere in the country, and everyone we met was really friendly.

Bumping this for @lillyorlana
@BarbaraofSeville could be describing any city, they all generally have loads to do and are so overlooked for holidays, lots of free indoor stuff too if the weather isn't great, and in my nearest city, Glasgow you can also be on the banks of Loch Lomond in 40 minutes on the train.
If you're interested and want specifics, post in Scotsnet with kids ages/interests etc, we're a friendly, helpful bunch Grin

Can't believe posters are saying Norfolk coast and North Wales are undesirable holiday destinations !!

@TapeMeasureBlues absolutely adore holdsworth house 🥰

May I add : a country cottage somewhere in rossendale - maybe somewhere like a village near Rawtenstall or even a weekend in Ramsbottom (Bury) - more walks than you can shake a stick at, trendy food and drink, friendly locals and pubs galore

Herefordshire. There’s no one here!

Hereford has the city museum, waterworks museum and the museum of cider. Also the Old House.

Probably has the usual shops (I’ve no interest in shopping).

River, scenic bits and my favourite cathedral.

Good countryside hereabouts and sensible rail links to Cardiff, Worcester etc. Short drive to Brecon Beacons or Ironbridge Museums.

I thought of more

Maryport in Cumbria - not touristy, interesting, quiet - try Blaithwaite house for camping

Bell tent at Rivington Brewery for a weekend
www.rivingtonbrewing.co.uk/camping
Near Bolton - stunning scenery, walks, food and drink stunning

To add to my Rossendale recommendation - look up The Giraffe House on air b n b
Also search Cronkshaw Fold Farm - you’ll love it

Try for hotels: Eagle and Child, Crow Wood Spa or Mitton Hall

I'd say the Devonshire Arms near Skipton if you're after a nice hotel. The Dales on your doorstep, Leeds within easy reach, pop over to Harrogate to enjoy the Victorian steam baths and perhaps tea at Betty's. Book yourself for a spa day in the titanic Spa near Huddersfield. Hit the Lido in ilkley if the weather is good. Or have a pub lunch at the delightful Red Lion in Burnsall.

There's so much on the doorstep or within easy striking distance
