Undesirable holiday locations, please!

I’m far too scared to book a wholesome staycation in a beautiful tourist area, lest I be run out of town by angry locals; or refused service in the extortionately priced local farm shop.

So, I’m planning to go to places that are not holiday destinations, where they might be pleased people are visiting. Or, even better, not notice.

My sole requirement is a nice hotel.

Any recommendations?

@Ormally Not heard the phrase but sounds like I need to add Hell to my recommendations to complete the trio Grin (Incidentally Hell for me would be John O Groats. Arse end of nowhere, derelict, windswept, and £10 to have your photo taken next to a sign post)

A staycation is when you don't leave your house except for day trips. When did it start to mean a fecking UK holiday?

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 10/04/2021 19:36

Also OP, it is worth going on holiday to Hull just to see people's faces when you say tou are going on holiday to Hull Grin

PolarnOPirate · 10/04/2021 19:38

We’re going on holiday to Leamington Spa 🙂 loads to do round there! Not staying in a hotel though sorry!

HastingsIsSuckingDiesel · 10/04/2021 19:41

Also I would suggest Liverpool for a city break- so much to do and see. Then if you want some beach you can go to Formby or somewhere up the coast there.

Ormally · 10/04/2021 19:42

DanceToTheMusic, exactly!

I always remember a trip to the Needles (in the context of the Hell bit) - not too bad but we tried to play the mini golf there, on the edge of the map so to speak, against a sprightly inland wind - hair over my eyes not helpful, and did actually have a few instances where the airborne ball was simply blown back from its target.

We had a great time in Leicestershire- the tourist board there do a super “go Leicestershire” deal (or they did before Covid). Tickets to several attractions and a good hotel, much cheaper than booking individually.
Also north Essex and south Suffolk. Not very touristy, but gorgeous countryside, lovely cafes and you can travel to the coast in an hour if you want to. Lots of history.

SunnyLovesCassie · 10/04/2021 19:50

If I can't do Italy this summer I am hoping for Liverpool and Leeds.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/04/2021 19:51

@osbertthesyrianhamster
Exactly.
If I take two days to drive down to Cornwall, and then spend three weeks there, seeing many different places, camping, staying in air b&bs, and a nice hotel.
It's a staycation thought right?

There was a long thread about this recently. I agree with you that a staycation is doing the touristy, holiday, fun things in the place you live and staying in your own home.

Loving all the love for Hull! It really is a fabulous place. Since I mentioned the patty, I really need to eat one now...or six...

@HastingsIsSuckingDiesel

My mum and dad astonished their friends by going to Liverpool on holiday (many years ago now). They had a brilliant time, stayed in a beautiful hotel by the beach, lovely friendly staff and hardly anyone else there! They are great art lovers and wanted to visit all the big galleries, but they loved it much more than they were expecting.

Seems like the world and his wife are going to Durham and Northumberland this year! We are planning to go up too as DS is just coming to the end of his degree at Durham and we will spend a few days and then bring him and his clobber back down. We had wanted to go up and visit before, but Covid put an end to that idea!

I actually live in Cornwall and as far as I'm concerned holiday visitors are very welcome - it might be more than usually busy this year though.

SecondhandTable · 10/04/2021 20:07

Liverpool!

Woodpecker22 · 10/04/2021 20:08

What about Cambridge? It will be pleasantly free of big groups of overseas tourists this summer so and ideal opportunity to admire the architecture in relative peace.

awaynboilyurheid · 10/04/2021 20:17

Paisley? No way should it be on here, certainly not a holiday destination for anyone, and I live not far away.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/04/2021 20:24

Paisley is near Glasgow but much cheaper to stay there so why not?
The Cathedral is lovely too.

This. Might be the only way a person can afford their holiday (not fucking 'staycation') in Glasgow.
osbertthesyrianhamster · 10/04/2021 20:27

We used to use hostels to holiday. In the UK.

AuntLucy · 10/04/2021 20:27

Don't go to Reading, its an absolute shithole 😳 Chichester is nice though. And Kent.

DogsAreShit · 10/04/2021 20:28

Hostels cost the same as B&Bs now.

Also contain many twats.

covilha · 10/04/2021 20:33

Durham dales

DarkMatterA2Z · 10/04/2021 20:35

River Thames between Reading and Oxford. Some nice small towns and villages. Blue skies and hazy dreamy meadows.

x2boys · 10/04/2021 20:38

Some of these places sound ok ,come to Bolton I can guarantee no one will be holidaying here ,we have the holiday village or the last drop hotel is lovely ,and if you like walking Rivingington and Belmont is lovely ,I would give the town centre a miss though .

Yeah, they used to be fab! We'd also go in Autumn and they were cheap and we'd often have it almost entirely to ourselves.
IHaveBrilloHair · 10/04/2021 20:45

Durham is gorgeous.
I grew up there and didn't appreciate it at all, but is a stunning city with lovely surroundings.
