The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

*No really I’m interested in your answer. Rather than answering a question with a question.

It obviously didn’t match public mood for many anyway, you can ignore it if you want, or rather the BBC can but every year streaming services become more relevant.

Personally I like the BBC and hope it will remain, not as likely if it’s tone deaf.*

I don't think it was important to have coverage on all channels. I said the same things as many on here did about how much coverage there was, the banner on cbeebies etc. I just also don't think it's even verging on actual complaint worthy for tv to not match your tastes for one day. Hence, my questions in response to you...

I don’t watch TV but I was heartened by fellow Radio 6 Music posters who had an issue with the dirge.

We are likely the least impressed demographic for it.

@PMcGintysGoat

It was one day

It wasn't, it's still the number one news story and will be for the next week.

Were the news reported on the basis of what was actually important information we'd have heard alot about it on Friday, and then relatively little since then until the day of the funeral. However the BBC Breaking News on their Twitter feed, which just sent a notification to my phone, is that the Queen has described the death of DoE as having left a huge void...etc. I'm sure it has, I feel sympathy, but how is this 'breaking news'? It's stating the obvious surely. It would have been more dignified and respectful to have had less reporting after the first few hours, rather than frantically trying to simulate a feeling that doesn't exist for much of the modern population.

This post was regarding complaining for the coverage on bbc 1 and 2 which was in fact half a day

Unfortunately complaining is the only way to give feedback to the BBC that you can expect to have considered - there isn't a 'constructive feedback' link. If viewers/listeners don't give feedback then increasingly we'd be given programming based on what their funder (government) wants us to have, which is far from ideal on several counts.

Doggitydog · 11/04/2021 16:35

@PMcGintysGoat it was one day of full coverage. Of course it’s going to be leading story on the news for the next week, the queens consort just died. Not Phil from down the road. They are still doing programmes on Diana. I really am bemused by people’s reactions on it, what did everyone expect? A two inch column on page 6 of your local paper?

Actually it’s better people give feedback than stop paying fee.

I expected an evening of programmes on BBC 1, and BBC 1 programmes to be run on BBC 2.

Jaxhog · 11/04/2021 16:41

If you don't like it - go read a book for goodness sake.

MumofSpud · 11/04/2021 16:45

But your argument about it being a waste of licence fee doesn't make sense - I never watch EastEnders but I understand that the BBC has spent millions on a new set - for a programme with falling viewing figures.

I would be more annoyed about the inflated salaries of some of the BBC presenters.

jessstan2 · 11/04/2021 16:45

I can only see one programme on TV tonight about the prince, on Channel 4. It was similar yesterday. Therefore the reality is nobody was inconvenienced for long and there are a myriad of free channels on TV and radio, most of which broadcast 'ordinary' things on Friday. If you didn't want to watch or listen to anything about Prince Philip, you had plenty of other choices.

PMcGintysGoat · 11/04/2021 16:46

Of course it’s going to be leading story on the news for the next week, the queens consort just died. Not Phil from down the road.

The queens consort just died. Also 16000 have had to flee their homes because of a volcano, dozens have been killed in Myanmar, and in northern ireland children are being exploited by those inciting the riots that have injured dozens of police officers. These are at least as important to me as the queens husband dying of natural causes after a full life.

What would have been more important to tell us about on the BBC news channel on Friday afternoon, bearing in mind it was showing what was being simultaneously broadcast on 4 other mainstream channels?

aSofaNearYou · 11/04/2021 16:48

Actually it’s better people give feedback than stop paying fee.

Yes I get that, but as I said the license fee costs less than a pound a day. If you would normally be watching BBC content every day, so this would actually disrupt you, then you have already got your money's worth. Sometimes weeks go by when I'm not interested in anything on there. If you genuinely feel that your only options are complain or stop paying your fee due to one day then you do come across as quite self indulgent.

Why?

I pay even though I don’t watch TV content. I only use radio. Iirc you don’t have to but I value it so continue to pay.

I have no issue with feedback.

Me too. Programmes for people interested and that seems reasonable. I don’t know why this is so bad for some.
ScarletZebra · 11/04/2021 16:56

So sad that people pay a license fee to watch channels totally dominated by something they may have no interest in.

BBC 1 and BBC were showing EXACTLY THE SAME THING. No-one has said that it shouldn't be shown at all, but to have it take over sooo much. There was just no need.

It wasn't that long ago when BBC1 and BBC2 were showing bloody football ALL EVENING for several nights on the trot, while ITV was showing rugby. That is quite a regular occurrence that we are all supposed to put up with. I can't abide watching any sort of sport, and there are regular periods when that is all that is being screened, so I really can't understand the fuss about one day.

onahighhill · 11/04/2021 16:59

Complete overkill. Most of us don't care about the Royal Family and the BBC had the SAME thing running on BBC1 and 2.

Devoted his life to public service? Horrible man, life of privilege, etc etc

Peregrina · 11/04/2021 17:02

No, he wasn't a grandfather to me, being born the same year as my mother.

Iamthewombat · 11/04/2021 17:12

Hurrah! Another one for the bingo card. You’re the first person to have suggested this...oh no, wait, you’re the fiftieth. Don’t let that stop you offering advice on what other people should be unhappy about though!

ineedaholidaynow · 11/04/2021 17:14

And if all BBC 1 programmes were on BBC2 how many BBC2 viewers would have complained about that

aSofaNearYou · 11/04/2021 17:16

Couldn't agree more and I have also been saying the same about sports. It's really not an uncommon occurrence for programming to be totally dominated by something you're not into. I can see how this would hit harder if you are actually offended by the RF, rather than just indifferent, but the general argument that it's worth complaining about just because you object to the lack of alternative programming on that one day is really dramatic, in my opinion.

PMcGintysGoat · 11/04/2021 17:16

ineedaholidaynow most complaints here have been the fact that identical programmes were shown on 5 channels simultaneously, nobody denied that one channel shouldn't have been showing the content.

RubyFowler · 11/04/2021 17:17

@MarshaBradyo I can only assume they actually believe the royals are superior, special humans that are worthy of all this 'respect' or whatever.
I thought it was a bit of quaint old tradition we were all going along with whilst recognising its all a bit silly. I didn't realise people actually think they are special and 'born to rule over us'!

Roussette · 11/04/2021 17:24

Yes.
And this has been said probably 100 times on this thread.

Tealightsandd · 11/04/2021 17:25

I have the opposite issue. I was too busy to watch much telly on Friday. I wanted to watch some interesting history about Prince Philip yesterday. By the time I was able to sit down on the sofa last night, there was just that one (good) programme channel 4 recommended by a PP. Nothing at all on any of the other many Freeview channels including the BBC. Pretty shit when he was the husband of our Head of State.

PMcGintysGoat · 11/04/2021 17:31

It isn't that there wasn't something on TV that I wanted to watch that I complained about. When that happens it's because what was broadcast would be interesting to people, just not me, and the BBC isn't my private service,

I objected to the fact that with their 5 channels simulbroadcasting the same programme they were providing 1 channel of what some people wanted and which did what was necessary to mark the event, and 4 channels of, effectively, nothing. What exactly was the point of removing 4 channels of content?
