The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 12:29

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

@yupyupyup

I can't believe that someone has said,

"It's not that we couldn't watch Bargain Hunt, it's that we didn't have the choice".

What has the world come to? I feel like I'm living in a parallel world! I'm ashamed to be on here too. You lot are an embarrassment!

Bargain Hunt was just an example, day time tv etc. 🙄

it was a good point.

It's 2021, we are not in North Korea, we don't have to put our life on hold because our Great Leader or a Great Leader' relative has passed.

It's bloody embarrassing to dismiss people who only have tv for a bit of entertainment in the middle of a lockdown.

It's fine when you are home, with unlimited internet access, have work, friends and a life. It's really shit for those who are struggling.

And frankly, it's sad a 99 year old man died, but why should we care more for him than anyone else. I feel sadder for Nikki Grahame stuck in a system that could not help her.

thebillyotea · 11/04/2021 11:38

@YouAreYourBestThing

Could you not just switch off the TV for one day if it bothers you? One. Day. 🤦‍♀️ Read a book. Phone a friend. Go for a walk. Clean the sodding windows! It's hardly the biggest inconvenience in the world really 🤷‍♀️ I'm not a royalist. I've not watched any of the coverage...but it hasn't bothered me in the slightest. I really don't understand the outrage, honestly! What's wrong with people?
Great advice for someone in hospital or a nursing home.

Especially the "clean the windows".

I don't know if people are more selfish or just stupid sometimes.

Can we just hold to tradition for one day and learn from it and know what it was like for earlier generations?

OK. You go and get more acid for the wireless batteries. I’ll draw water from the well, heat it in a copper then bash it around with a dolly peg. How lucky we are that a royal death has given us the chance to learn about history!

inappropriateraspberry · 11/04/2021 11:40

@YetAnotherSpartacus

It’s about once per page. Somebody then patiently explains that it’s not about missing TV programmes but about the BBC deciding for us that we will all be made to watch identical content on BBC1 and BBC2 and listen to sad music on all the radio stations because we should all be in mourning

This is such a fantastic time to learn about history! This is what happened (well, to the radio) when King George VI died. My mother was taken to London and made to queue for ages to see King George V lying in state ( ithink in those days it was also her job to get the wireless batteries charged). It's one day. Can we just hold to tradition for one day and learn from it and know what it was like for earlier generations? This in itself is interesting.

But he wasn't the King, he was consort to the Queen. I fully expect this sort of coverage when she dies, as ruler of the country and commonwealth. He was a very old man who died after being in and out of hospital. A sad loss for his family, but not a tragic loss for the country.
Roussette · 11/04/2021 11:42

Exactly FlattestWhite it's the principle of the thing. But the 'go off and read a book' posters can't seem to get that.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/04/2021 11:43

Yes indeed. But unfortunately Northern Ireland and Brexit are being ignored due to a grief fest about a 99 year old guy.

His death won’t have the historical ramifications that the upswing in violence in Northern Ireland will. But that doesn’t matter does it? Let’s have an enforced mass mourning for a 99 year old geezer instead. Whilst Ireland tears itself apart.

I know I shouldn't find that funny. But I really did 😂

Totally agree too!

You can learn about history at any time if you are interested enough.

ineedaholidaynow · 11/04/2021 11:56

I think anyone who thought this wouldn’t happen after Prince Philip died is a bit stupid. It’s not just that he was the Queen’s husband it is because they were together 73 years, so around most of our lives, and she was Queen for most of those years.

I am sure it wouldn’t be the same if Charles was on the throne and Camilla died. Yes there would be lots of Press coverage (probably mainly about Diana!) but not to the extent that we have had for Philip.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/04/2021 12:00

He wasn't - but from memory, (not mine, but from what I was told) I think similar happened when Churchill died? And Good Friday used to be the same as well?

It's a cultural tradition.

And OMG I DO remember Diana!

Yes indeed. But unfortunately, Northern Ireland and Brexit are being ignored

Plenty has been said about Brexit and Northern Ireland is a different, sad and complex issue. I'm not sure that the death of PP is the reason for obscuring that one.

You can learn about history at any time if you are interested enough

Of course, but this is a particular lesson - and an especially interesting one!

I didn’t think it would happen. It never crossed my mind.

I have a PhD. Yeah I’m probably a bit stupid🙄

Most of that 73 years was in private, and the Queen and his family will quite rightly, be mourning the loss of a father, grandfather etc. I don't see why that means we need blanket coverage repeating what he has done 'behind the scenes' for the environment etc. As I said before, a couple of programs about it would suffice. I'm not belittling what he has done, but he is not the King!
ineedaholidaynow · 11/04/2021 12:04

Well I guess it is lining us up for what will happen when the Queen dies.

Rummikub · 11/04/2021 12:05

But is that a reason to have the exact same content on bbc1 and 2?

What’s the rationale behind that?

The public cannot have anything fun or choice of tv- during lockdown ffs- because the Queen’s consort has died?

Not everyone has other tv packages or decent internet. Or other people around. Tv might be the only thing available to take away the tedium.
Yes that might be sad but it’s reality for some.

Iamthewombat · 11/04/2021 12:07

When the other side start rolling out the insults (“...a bit stupid”) you know that you are winning.

ineedaholidaynow · 11/04/2021 12:07

I assume the BBC felt it might be disrespectful to have comedies etc on one channel whilst being in ‘mourning’ on another channel.

Flaunch · 11/04/2021 12:07

Threads like this really highlight how fucking sad some people’s lives are.

Don’t like what’s on the tv? DO SOMETHING ELSE.

I didn’t think much on it but I’d say I would have expected heavy news coverage, many shows dedicated to it but not simultaneous broadcast nor change of music on R6.

Hopefully feedback will make people question heavy handed approach for next.

Or give us a choice of what to watch?
ineedaholidaynow · 11/04/2021 12:11

And it was only for about 12 hours the simultaneous broadcast. Most coverage is reasonably back to normal now isn’t it with just some special programmes on.

News website only has one article at the moment on it.

Flaunch · 11/04/2021 12:11

Must be truly devastating to a person to not be able to watch the TV or listen to the radio for an entire day. I can’t imagine the trauma of it. Do you need counselling now?
