The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 12:29

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

No, she was listening to a BBC radio station. Big difference.

Yeh Radio 6 Music

The clue is in the name.

Bluegrass · 10/04/2021 22:41

The BBC aren’t saying that YOU have to be in mourning. You can whack on a CD and dance naked if you want. You can turn cartwheels and sing Sex Pistols tracks. More mundanely, you can watch or listen to thousands of hours of content on iplayer or Sounds, no matter how irreverent it is.

What they are saying though is that for a short period of time THEY are required to adopt an attitude of mourning, and that will impact their output for a bit.

It isn’t North Korea. It isn’t chasing ratings. It’s saying that as a public broadcaster whose existence is based on a royal warrant, this is how they are required to behave at the moment. Normal service will be resumed shortly.

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2021 22:45

Some really can’t acknowledge that not everyone wants the same level royal coverage as they do.

You could get your channel dedication and be happy with that.

Hopefully BBC got the message somewhat.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I’m really not sure why they suspended BBC 4 either🤔

We don’t live in the 1950’s

Or north Korea
Porcupineintherough · 10/04/2021 22:51

How is it chasing ratings to have all your channels broadcasting the same thing? Or going off air?

Quaagars · 10/04/2021 22:52

Exactly, but shush and away with your talking sense lol
Wasted on MN half the time Grin

Well the BBC can say what they want but the public can respond.

And tune out so viewer numbers plummet.

Then they can issue a statement as they will.

And hopefully adjust so we can have a better service which we pay for.

RubyFowler · 10/04/2021 22:59

Required by who?

RubyFowler · 10/04/2021 23:12

If the BBC were required to run hours of the same programme on both BBC 1 and 2 plus all the rest then fair enough.

If they simply chose to do so, as they thought it was most appropriate, then I disagree with that, and it would be a perfectly valid complaint.

Trustisamust · 10/04/2021 23:21

I find it a bit odd when people on the TV are saying it's so sad. He was 99 and lead a wonderfully full and privileged life!! So many people don't make it to anywhere near that figure.
It should be more about a celebration of his life than a mourning of his death IMO.

Iamthewombat · 10/04/2021 23:32

Why can't people just accept that we have a monarchy and it's a big deal if any of them die?

It’s the ‘and it’s a big deal’ that most people have a problem with. It’s hard to miss the existence of the monarchy. They tend to remind us regularly by making a show of themselves and grubbing money.

If Prince Andrew dropped dead next week (of shame) would you welcome 24 hours of identical ‘wasn’t he marvellous?’ programming on the two main BBC channels, sorrowful music on every BBC radio station and BBC4 being taken off air?

If not, why not? Surely it’s a big deal because, you know, we should just accept that we have a royal family and when one of them pops their clogs it’s such a big deal that it is mandatory to mourn and the BBC should make sure that we do so properly.

At what point is somebody not royal enough to warrant such treatment? I’m curious. Princess Michael of Kent? Peter Philips? Or are we going to have an evening of enforced dismay for all of these people?

I’ll leave you with a quote from Richard II after the peasants’ revolt: “Serfs ye are and serfs ye shall remain”. That was in 1381 and it appears that a surprising number of people still think this way.

Hazeyday · 10/04/2021 23:32

@KingscoteStaff Spot on. You've summed it up perfectly.

The clue is in the name

Radio 6 Music = not your own music but content someone else puts on for you. Clue is in the name.

Play music you own, full autonomy on what you listen to.

HeddaGarbled · 10/04/2021 23:43

The BBC is in a difficult place right now. The Tories have been softening us all up to remove their public funding for some time and it’s Tories who would have hung them out to dry if they hadn’t gone ‘state broadcaster’.

We’ll lose them soon anyway. Then we’ll be like the US and we’ll have a Fox copy for the right wingers and a CNN copy for the left wingers and no one will ever have to listen to the truth anymore, just a circle jerk of people who agree with you.

We’ll be poorer for it, but hey, you won’t have to miss whatever trash TV programme you use to distract yourself from the crapification of news media.

It’s weird when poster wrote that post people said stop watching tv then. Poster was listening to music on the radio.

I pay the license fee and would hope radio 6 have got the message that their listeners don’t want days of dirge.

You probably don’t even use it? So what does it matter to you.

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2021 23:48

I pay even though I only access their radio stations.

A shame when they manage to annoy their loyal funders.

Rummikub · 10/04/2021 23:48

I’m pro bbc. I do fear that the govt are looking to reduce their funding. And I agree I think we would be poorer for it as a nation.

However, showing the exact same programming on 2 main channels was excessive. Just changing the programming for bbc 1 would have been plenty and enough of a statement.

HalzTangz · 11/04/2021 00:17

@DoingItMyself

I understand the need to show respect and concern, but one channel would have been enough. Even for me.
Totally agree, there was no need for every channel to cover it
HalzTangz · 11/04/2021 00:22

@GlencoraP

I cannot understand this , off you don’t want to watch it turn off . It’s one day , one day FGS . Read a book , watch channel 4 or 5 or one of the many ITV channels , do a jigsaw.
Except it wasn't one day, all day today has also been nothing but Prince Philip
steppemum · 11/04/2021 00:35

So, I was out in the garden, radio on, every radio station had just coverage of the Duke. For 2 hours outside, I listened to interviews and commentary. I took time to think about this moment in the nations history, etc etc.

Then I went inside and turned on TV. Not just BBC but every single channel, just Prince Philip. I watched for a bit, and then it was the same thing on repeat and the same thing that I had listened to on the radio.

I am happy for the BBC to have a lot of coverage. But after several hours, I had seen it all, and wanted to flop.

I don't have netflix or sky or any other service.
But I do have plenty of recorded stuff, so I watched that.

It was over the top. It was more than anyone wanted or needed.
One channel given over to Prince Philip. One channel showing normal programmes.
Then everyone is catered for.

I think it’s just a shock to many people. For the vast majority, this Queen and her Consort have been on the throne all their lives. Philip had looked very unwell for several years but somehow now he has gone it seems the end of an era. Many people are thinking of how this will affect the Queen at her age . The situation with the pandemic has made many people feel vulnerable and quite traumatised. The world we are living in has become quite frightening. The passing of a very elderly man who has led such an interesting life and been part of our country’s history for nearly a century is a shock. I have always thought when Philip goes the Queen will not last many years longer. He had been her backbone all her adult life. So that is sad too.
KatherineJaneway · 11/04/2021 06:40

You probably don’t even use it? So what does it matter to you.

I suggested that if you are sick of the coverage, there were plenty of other activities to do such as listening to music. You tried to twist what I said so I clarified. Listen to your OWN music. If you listen to a station run by the national broadcaster, they will be following the Forth Bridge protocol and you'll not get the usual content.

You keep saying such as listening to music. Er I was trying to. Get it yet?

You can go on about state broadcaster all you like however it’s a service the public pay for and if they fail to listen to feedback and take your approach people will choose to stop paying.

As much as posters want everyone to just deal with if we pay and can also stop.

Given that government could decrease funding they may as well listen when the public give strong feedback,

Mousetown · 11/04/2021 07:14

@expectopelargonium

He was married to the most recognisable, influential and powerful woman on the planet for 73 years. He'd been at the core of the Monarchy for 68 of them.

How often do we have to put up with sport being broadcast simultaneously on both channels? Watching overgrown schoolboys playing with their balls is a bit trite in comparison, don't you think?

Your classism is showing.
RampantIvy · 11/04/2021 07:16

I don't think it is classism. It's history, a one off event. Nothing to do with class.
