Just fell down the stairs!

OnYourLeft3 · 10/04/2021 01:09

I feel so stupid, a toy was left on the top stair and I've just stepped on it and slid, caught myself on the bannister with my hand so I slid down on my back and didn't topple over, I went down the whole set of stairs and I am in so much pain!

The inside of my arm feels like it's on fire, my lower back is killing and I've broke 3 nails.

Should I get some ice on it? I haven't fallen in years and I'm pretty shook up by it.

Hi OP I don't have much advice to give but I hope you are ok. Maybe see what the NHS website says about back injuries.

Ice and painkillers sounds like a good idea though.

DioneTheDiabolist · 10/04/2021 01:15

Mega ouch OP. Get some ice on it, take a couple of painkillers and keep them within reach tonight. Do you have any arnica?

It's pretty scary when something like that happens, so be kind to yourself over the next few days.Flowers

Therewereroses · 10/04/2021 01:15

What sort of nails have you? How do you break three nails sliding down the stairs on your back? Were they fake nails or something?

You're probably very bruised and will be sore for a few days. If you find any awful pain other than what you suspect is bruising, then you might need an xray for broken bones. How do you feel right now?

DramaAlpaca · 10/04/2021 01:23

@OnYourLeft3 oh no, poor you. I know how just you feel as I did exactly the same 10 days ago. In my case the dog ran in front of me, and down I went.

Somehow my feet went from under me and I slid down the stairs on my bum and my back. I've still got an enormous bruise on my bum and my tailbone is so sore. I haven't broken anything but God it hurts.

It really shakes you up doesn't it? Ice and ibuprofen helps. I got some ibuprofen with codeine, which helped too.

Hope you're OK Flowers

OnYourLeft3 · 10/04/2021 01:25

They are my nails but as I was falling I grabbed the bannister and broke 3 of them gripping it.

Arm is extremely sore and my legs feel weak at the moment but I seem to be okay apart from that.

Thank you for your kind words.

Oh no! Get yourself some ibuprofen and arnica cream. Sounds painful

YouAintKingDingALing · 10/04/2021 01:29

Good god that sounds painful. It is a huge shock too.

Have a brew with some sugar in it, pain relief and ice. Try and steady your breathing too. I know when I've done similar I've kind of held my breath (due to the shock I guess).

IWishIWasABaller · 10/04/2021 01:36

Have you someone with you op ? What a fright you must have gotten . Hot surgery cup of tea , an ice pack and some ibuprofen Flowers

Therewereroses · 10/04/2021 01:47

You might have torn ligaments or something if the inside of your arm is sore. If you don't feel that anything is broken, then you'll probably just need rest and relaxation. Can you move your arm properly? And shoulder? I think that if you had broken a collarbone or similar, you would be in excruciating pain when moving. I did it once and passed out trying to roll out of the bed. You could have done any amount of injuries to yourself, so it might be worthwhile speaking to your GP or similar just to check you over. Are you a heavy weight and a little padded? I ask because a bit of padding might have shielded you perhaps.

jessstan2 · 10/04/2021 01:49

Oh you poor thing. It's really frightening. I did that three years ago in August, top to bottom, and could barely move for weeks afterwards. My husband was out at the time somewhere quite far away. I lay on the floor hearing the 'phone ringing for what seemed like hours. He had a shock when he got in, managed to get me up and stayed home from work for a couple of weeks to help me. I couldn't go upstairs, thank goodness I have a downstairs loo though that was difficult enough to negotiate.

It certainly zapped my confidence.

Tend to your injuries, op, and pamper yourself as far as you can. I can assure you that you will be more careful in the future.

AcornAutumn · 10/04/2021 01:52

@mooonstone

Oh no! Get yourself some ibuprofen and arnica cream. Sounds painful
I'd go with this

Lower back concerns me. You might have a fracture even if you have walked around. I'd go to A&E. Don't risk your back.

So sorry Flowers

SionnachGlic · 10/04/2021 01:52

Gat a hot tead with sugar, panadol & a bag of frozen peas or ice...wriggle things about a bit & check nothing swelling up. If not & as long as you didn't hit your head at all...I'd get into bed asap & allow your body recover from shock. Hopefully you'll get away with just bruises & the broken nails.

NiceGerbil · 10/04/2021 01:53

Ouch!

That sort of thing really shakes you up. Not surprised you're feeling wobbly.

Doesn't sound like you whacked your head? If you did then need to take more care.

Otherwise. I'd say watch telly have a stiff drink/ paracetamol. You'll be bruised but will get better :)

SionnachGlic · 10/04/2021 01:53

Get a hot tea.... sorry

Therewereroses · 10/04/2021 02:00

Very sharp pain is something to get checked out. It could be a sprain, it could be something broken. Dull pain which is just sore to touch will be bruising. If in doubt at all, you can always call 111 who will have better checks to run through. The last thing that you want is to end up with an injured back or a broken bone which you haven't had seen to in time. When I broke my collarbone, I was supposed to be in this sling for 12 weeks. I couldn't. When I went back for the check-up, the doctor said, 'you've been using that arm haven't you'. I said yes, I had no choice. He said 'well, the break has healed a few millimetres out'. As I wasn't planning on swimming the English channel, I wasn't too bothered, but I think it's likely I might get pain in it as I get older. I've also broken an elbow! I'm in for a painful old age.

Therewereroses · 10/04/2021 02:01

Is there any part of you which you simply can't move as it's too painful?

OnYourLeft3 · 10/04/2021 02:13

No one here it's just me and my 2 children.

Arm is still extremely sore but I have full movement of it, I have been walking around and my lower back is killing me and my legs feel weak. I'm going to try and stay still for a while I think that I walked out of shock.

I've taken ibuprofen, thank you for your kind words.

OP posts:
SeaToSki · 10/04/2021 02:16

I did that and it turns out I broke two ribs while yanking my arm

If you have sharp pain, call for medical advice. If you get numbness or tingling in any part of your legs, feet, arms and hands..call for medical advice

If you feel dizzy or light headed...call

Otherwise, ice for 20 mins on and 20 mins off..hot tea...ibuprofen and thank you lucky stars

NiceGerbil · 10/04/2021 02:18

I mean none of us know but you sound ok :)

Yes your legs will feel weak because you've had one hell of a shock!

Take care of yourself :)

Horehound · 10/04/2021 02:19

Oh it's horrible having a fall. Poor you op

I totally understand about the shaken up feeling. I think talking to someone helps and also maybe a TV show for distraction until your adrenaline dissipates. Brew

theoldtrout01876 · 10/04/2021 02:24

I did this a few years ago when I was sleep walking. Woke up as i was sliding down my hardwood stairs on my back, stark naked. My Ds2 rushed out his room to see what the noise was and I had to send him away cos I was mortified cos I was naked. He was in his early 20s at the time. Oh god the pain for like 4 days. I lived on motrin and had a heat sock literally tied to my lower back. Couldnt get in or out of chairs easily, had trouble walking cos of the hip pain and once in bed couldnt actually roll over or anything. It did go away eventually but wasnt fun for a few days acrobatics involved to wipe my arse

dottiedaisee · 10/04/2021 02:26

Ibuprofen x2 and paracetamol x2 bed and tv for a while!!Hope you feel ok in the morning 💐

IWishIWasABaller · 10/04/2021 23:09

How are you today op hope you are feeling better and not too sore

OnYourLeft3 · 11/04/2021 08:52

Feeling very sore and very bruised but other than that I'm okay. Thank you for your concern.
