I now understand fly tippers - rant warning!

Previously, I would have said that fly tippers were simply scummy people who did not care about the environment or community. Having been to our local tip this morning, I now understand why people fly tip and I think we are going to see astronomical levels of it.

I went to the tip to dispose of a 10yo computer and monitor, some assorted metal bits and pieces (mainly from broken stuff, but I was trying to keep the metal out of landfill to, you know, save the environment) and a sheet of wood which we used to use as a dog guard. Nothing difficult, standard stuff that people dispose of.

Our tip is open under "emergency" usage. This has been the case since covid. Apparently residents are supposed to just "store" their litter and only visit the tip if they can't. Well, we were tripping over this stuff on our narrow landing and with kids, dog and us so I decided to tip it.

I queued for 90 mins. Upon entering the hallowed gates, you are interrogated by the Gestapo. You are directed to a bay in which you must park, regardless of what kind of stuff you have to dump and the relevant bin being at the other end of the tip. Several of the bins are pay bins, ferociously guarded. A woman stepped out of a line to recycle some plastic and was screamed at.

The asbestos bin is a pay bin, along with about 6 others. Council, you fucking idiots. People are bagging asbestos up and dumping it in the free "non recyclable" bin. In fact, anything that belongs in a pay bin is being bagged up and dumped in non recyclable. Not by me, but it's pretty bloody obvious what's going on. The pay bins look so clean and empty. The tip opens short hours and is closed Weds and Thurs. 17,000 people live in the catchment area of this tip.

Our landfill bins are collected fortnightly and woe betide anyone who has their bin open even a bloody crack. Our recycling is supposed to be weekly but they often leave behind one category, which we are again instructed to "store".

This is what happens when councils hand over a functioning council tip to a private company who cut costs in any way they can. Closures, hour cuts, pay bins.

This is an area with a lot of woodland around. People go to the woods at night and tip the contents of their vehicle out into the woods. Now I know why and I don't even think they are particularly bad people. I think they are people who are doing it out of necessity as there is no reasonable way to get rid of their litter. I was out for a total of 2 hours. Who can afford to waste time like that? I needed the bloody toilet and got pins and needles in my leg.

Why can't councils see why stuff is fly tipped everywhere? Ours is whining about spending record amounts to clean it up. Erm...do you not see cause and effect?

End of rant

@TheRealMrsMorningstar

Ours will only accept one type of rubbish at a time. I have a bed to dispose of which will now be 3 trips; metal, wood, landfill. It is a toddler bed (poor condition so can't pass on) which all fits in my boot in one go but I have to go 3 times 🤷🏼‍♀️ ridiculous!
Offer metal free to any metal collector (they'll weight it in for cash), wood for free firewood, and that leaves 1 trip
Nohomemadecandles · 10/04/2021 11:06

It can be organised well, as some local councils are demonstrating. We don't even get the "pay" bit. Hiring a skip is your only option here for waste the council can't be bothered with.

It is really annoying that others get all "jobsworth" and officious about it.

aiwblam · 10/04/2021 11:44

To those who suggested I need the GP if going the toilet every 2 hours - in fact, since I’m 5 mins drive from from the tip and expected this to the about a 25 min outing, I did not visit the toilet beforehand. I thought I was nipping out, not wasting a morning on a crazy expedition!

And my tip does have catchment. You have to show proof of address and they automatically record all number plates of vehicles entering.

Many people are paying for private waste pickups from and probably once a year I end up booking Anyjunk. However, it’s not cheap and it isn’t an option for the everyone. I am terrified to use a local waste person instead of a national company in case they are rogue and dump stuff over the countryside.

It is appalling to read how many people have similar or even worse tip issues!

A lot of flytippers are rogue 'commercial' operators. People you pay to take your rubbish and they go and dump it.

But reading everything here, I'm glad Birmingham are reasonable. They introduced a booking system to manage queues but I've never been hurried along once in and I've not had any grief from staff. No unreasonable restrictions on what I can take, any resident can use any tip and they're fairly well spread around the city, they've always accepted my driving licence as proof I live in the city.

Paid bulky waste collection too, £33 for up to 10 furniture/appliance/etc items or up to 20 black bags. Garden waste collection started being paid for a few years back.

Birmingham are also among the bottom in the country for official recycling rates, which no doubt ignore flytipped waste. So I bet we'll see change for the worse to fudge the figures up.

@Love51

I know a family who have 2 wheelchair users, therefore their car is a wheelchair accessible vehicle ( looks a bit like the school transport vehicles). They can't take things to the tip in it because it is counted as a commercial vehicle, which it clearly isn't, it is a necessary family vehicle. Same family have 2 people permanently using nappies / pads so generate more waste than average. So whenever the council don't come to take the bins as scheduled, they are up shit creek. I live in a different council, our council have been pretty good at turning up, apart from this time last year. But the tip across the border is so hard to access, I'm not surprised people flytip!
Cut and dried case of disability discrimination by that council I feel.

Ours has gone to appointment only
So inconvenient
There’s stuff we could’ve got rid of today. Ut no can go Tuesday
Yep, we’re away on Monday for the week

I've just discovered that my local tip has a webcam for you to see how big the queue is. I've been watching for twenty minutes.

@justanotherneighinparadise

My MIL loves in Bishops Stortford and now has to pay separately to have her garden waste removed. No more green bin. Prepare for that reality in the near future.
My area has been like that for years, I don't think it is extortionate at £40 per year 🤷‍♀️

Is that the new Abbey Road crossing? Quite dull yet strangely fascinating at the same time.

I am emptying my loft , the things l can't sell on eBay or give to charity shop gets stuffed into black bin. Every time my black bin is emptied l to up to loft and shove something else in it I have smashed up my broken fence panels and put them in brown bin. I
I did attempt to go to the tip, it was such a long winded palava, made to feel really uncomfortable, can't stand going there at the best of times, so for now this is what on doing .

Dingleydel · 12/04/2021 16:19

Shock I don’t know they did this. We have an excellent tip (let you Chuck pretty much anything, very helpful staff, and will put anything half decent in the little shop) locally to us but it’s over the boarder in another county and it’s not strictly our local tip. I had no idea until very recently when someone posted something on the local Facebook group that you are meant to use tips in your own county. These stories are ridiculous.

Pre COVID it was quite entertaining watching tourists annoying uber drivers by posing for pictures on the crossing.
Now I’m watching a COVID marshall, a man in a fluorescent bib and a line of 20+ cars edging nervously forward at a glacial pace.

Poppins2016 · 12/04/2021 16:26

In my area we have to pay for disposing of old tiles/plaster/rubble at the tip. When we looked surprised at the high cost, the workers told us to take it home and disguise/dispose of it slowly with our regular household waste...

Councils really need to sort this issue out. If people have to pay and/or wait, it will inevitably lead to inappropriate waste disposal (whether through fly tipping or disguise)!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 12/04/2021 16:57

How do you feel about £70 from an undefined point in March (usually the end of April) - October, fortnightly if you're feeling lucky? Assuming you have the time or inclination to brush off every scrap of dirt from the plants, measure the diameter of the cuttings, take out anything that might be edible because that's food waste, not plant waste and can take the chance of it not being collected for over a month whilst it all ferments in there, at which point they say it's not garden waste anymore, it's the start of compost? All reasons why it's not a popular service here. That and refusing to refund from zero collections last year.

I was thinking about doing it, were it not for the need to get in and out of the front door for work. I'm glad I didn't. But burning the dead trimmings isn't very popular with anybody at present; got no choice, though, what with not owning a car, never mind the need to present a passport and council tax bill to be permitted even after the ANPR has checked registered address of the vehicle.

PrudenceDictates · 12/04/2021 17:27

Sorry...
Our tip, even before Covid, had stopped accepting wood, meaning there was over an hour's drive to another one. They then stopped accepting metal things and garden waste, too.
I phoned up to book a paid for collection of an old exercise bike but they said they wouldn't take it. So I couldn't tip it or have it collected... so I guess I could only keep it forever or fly tip it (I wouldn't, btw!)

As luck would have it, a scrap merchant saw it on our drive and asked if he could take it.

LuaDipa · 12/04/2021 20:04

Our local tip is fantastic. You can pop down at any time, no appointments and aside from when they first re-opened, no huge queues either. They take anything except hardcore, and we can go in our crew van or pick up provided we register the vehicles online (free of charge) and display the permit. We do pay extra for garden waste collection at home, but it’s well worth it in my opinion.

Despite our fantastic local waste service there is still a horrendous issue with fly-tipping. I run a lot locally and am bloody disgusted by the amount of crap I find shoved on the side of the road. There is absolutely no excuse, some people are just lazy and selfish.
