I now understand fly tippers - rant warning!

Previously, I would have said that fly tippers were simply scummy people who did not care about the environment or community. Having been to our local tip this morning, I now understand why people fly tip and I think we are going to see astronomical levels of it.

I went to the tip to dispose of a 10yo computer and monitor, some assorted metal bits and pieces (mainly from broken stuff, but I was trying to keep the metal out of landfill to, you know, save the environment) and a sheet of wood which we used to use as a dog guard. Nothing difficult, standard stuff that people dispose of.

Our tip is open under "emergency" usage. This has been the case since covid. Apparently residents are supposed to just "store" their litter and only visit the tip if they can't. Well, we were tripping over this stuff on our narrow landing and with kids, dog and us so I decided to tip it.

I queued for 90 mins. Upon entering the hallowed gates, you are interrogated by the Gestapo. You are directed to a bay in which you must park, regardless of what kind of stuff you have to dump and the relevant bin being at the other end of the tip. Several of the bins are pay bins, ferociously guarded. A woman stepped out of a line to recycle some plastic and was screamed at.

The asbestos bin is a pay bin, along with about 6 others. Council, you fucking idiots. People are bagging asbestos up and dumping it in the free "non recyclable" bin. In fact, anything that belongs in a pay bin is being bagged up and dumped in non recyclable. Not by me, but it's pretty bloody obvious what's going on. The pay bins look so clean and empty. The tip opens short hours and is closed Weds and Thurs. 17,000 people live in the catchment area of this tip.

Our landfill bins are collected fortnightly and woe betide anyone who has their bin open even a bloody crack. Our recycling is supposed to be weekly but they often leave behind one category, which we are again instructed to "store".

This is what happens when councils hand over a functioning council tip to a private company who cut costs in any way they can. Closures, hour cuts, pay bins.

This is an area with a lot of woodland around. People go to the woods at night and tip the contents of their vehicle out into the woods. Now I know why and I don't even think they are particularly bad people. I think they are people who are doing it out of necessity as there is no reasonable way to get rid of their litter. I was out for a total of 2 hours. Who can afford to waste time like that? I needed the bloody toilet and got pins and needles in my leg.

Why can't councils see why stuff is fly tipped everywhere? Ours is whining about spending record amounts to clean it up. Erm...do you not see cause and effect?

End of rant

3 bins, 1 general recycling, 1 non recyclable and food waste caddy. Food waste and General recycling collected weekly, garden (a paid for service, no from me!) And non recyclable run fortnightly alternating the collection week. Seems to work here.

Tips aren't too bad. In the height of lockdown you'd queue over an hour and most of the waste areas are free. Now you drive in as they have increased the capacity finally! I think the council also got lots of complaints as my local tip comes off a busy dual carriageway linking to the M1 and M25 and queues backtailed onto said dual carriageway and caused a few nasty accidents.

terrywynne · 09/04/2021 22:16

Just looked at our tip and pleasantly surprised. Open 7 days a week, just opened extended hours one day per week for the summer. No bookin. Advised to consider whether every trip is essential but staff won't challenge multiple trips. Queues may be closer if too busy. Hire vans allowed so long as you show the hire paper work. Charges for DIY waste but don't seem extortionate. Actually tempted to go to the tip now! I had been worrying it would be a horrible experience.

It is, however, utter madness that some councils can offer a functioning service and others just... can't?

Eyevorbig0ne · 09/04/2021 22:37

I feel you! We queued for 45 mins on Tuesday to access the tip. They guard the non paying skips like stasi. They have a watcher at the gate checking the post code...
We have approx 2 more carloads..... But just cba wasting that much of our annual leave queueing at the tip. And we were lucky!
When we drove out the queue was into the main road.

A newish neighbor told me a tale about how in the time between them buying the house and final completion someone dumped 10 black bags of household waste and numerous large cardboard cartons in their back garden, Her DH took them to the tip and was charged at a "commercial rate" because he used his van. He was pretty mad.

She speculated on the fact that the fly-tipper must have been someone very local as we are a small estate. Her house is tucked in a corner and the FOR SALE sign would not have been visible to any passing motorist. It was an estate sale so someone knew that house was empty for weeks.

I had cctv pictures of another neighbor fly-tipping on my property and showed them to her. "Your husband might be interested to see these. I wonder how likely it is to have two fly tippers on such a small estate". She asked me to email them over. I would be curious to know whether her DH confronted the possible culprit.

Sometimes it can be fun to just light the blue touchpaper and retire!

I’m in Australia and our various disposal systems are utterly brilliant. So we have the normal waste collection (normal bin every week, then recycling and green alternate weeks).
We have a local recycling plant where you can take things too big for the bin or that need disposing of properly (engine oil, tyres etc) and we then have the tip for anything else.
Then twice a year we have “curb side collection” where we put our basically anything and it gets collected (so much so that I think we’ve only been to the tip once in 10 years)
We also have a monthly mulching place where you can take branches and logs and they chip them for you, for free, and then you can take the bark chippings home for the garden.

Ozgirl75 · 09/04/2021 23:12

Shame theyve spoilt tips in the U.K. I used to love a trip to the tip with my dad, just flinging stuff into a massive hole and then having loads of flat capped blokes coming and rummaging over the stuff.

Embroideredstars · 09/04/2021 23:12

Wow we must be lucky round here, dh just turned up at our tip with mixed rubbish and got rid of it all the other day!

Miljea · 10/04/2021 00:29

I've cut to the end.

To completely agree with you. Our local dump has been utterly ridiculous since lockdown. You have to read and agree to a page of rules, most of which tell you that their 'operatives' all wear body-cams and will tolerate no abuse of any nature, can evict you and ban you forthwith. Your visit must be made within your booked 20 minute slot; if you're late (like you've been queuing in their hideously mismanaged queue for 60 mins), you may be asked to leave. Operatives will under no circumstances assist with any refuse, that is entirely the responsibility of the member of the public; and they MUST attend alone. And everyone must wear masks at all times. Cars with more than one occupant may be turned back.

Etc.

Of course, it's all bollocks. They're carrying on as normal. No bodycams, no refusing to help old ladies, no time slot fascism, few masks etc.

But if you'd read the rules online (as you booked your timed, number plated once a week only session), you might go 'Fuck That'.

Miljea · 10/04/2021 00:30

Dear Councils,

Are you reading this? The opinions of your tax paying public?...

VanGoghsDog · 10/04/2021 00:34

If you need the loo every two hours you should see your GP.

Fwiw, tips don't have catchment areas, you can go to a different one.

Miljea · 10/04/2021 00:36

I should add something about 'won't tolerate abuse' in my post. I should have elaborated.

It kicked off big time when a bloke in the queue questioned the queue operative as to the point of timed slot, and the threat of being refused use of the dump if you failed to arrive at your timed slot, if the queue was 60 minutes long. Operative banned that driver.

It went SM pretty quickly! 😂

Yes they do. It's to do with the council you pay your tax to. 100% so in Hampshire. You have to register your car before you can go so they know where you live.

Yes they do. We have to show our council tax bill as proof that we are eligible to use it.
VanGoghsDog · 10/04/2021 00:49

Not where I live and not where my mum lives. I registered my car for my mum's tip (she can't go on her own) and they never questioned it as not being registered anywhere nearby (I really doubt the council database cross-references to DVLA anyway).

I didn't have to show a council tax bill to either. Since this time last year I've been to mum's tip once and my tip twice.

Ahahahaha. I WISH I only needed the loo every two hours. I am basically a machine for turning tea into urine.
KeepWashingThoseHands · 10/04/2021 06:08

I hear you OP.

Our recycling centre is positively brilliant after what I’ve read here so I’ll stop complaining. We have to book and get a 15 mins slot to arrive. All free.

EventuallyDistracted · 10/04/2021 07:42

Yes but you can go to any tip in Hampshire. I skim through the T&Cs when I book, they're fine, I don't imagine most even read them. I've never queued for more than 5 mins since booking was introduced, social media locally has been totally silent about the tip for months once the initial flurry of complaints about having to book died down and people got used to it, so it all seems to be working just fine here. However we do still get flytipping - a lot of that appears to be rogue trade waste that gets dumped rather than pay a licensed carrier.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/04/2021 10:27

Fwiw, tips don't have catchment areas, you can go to a different one

Yes they do. We live 7 miles from 1 (postcode "ABC1" ), and 4 miles from another (postal code "ABC2"). We have to use the one furthest away as we are in "ABC1", and the nearest one only accepts rubbish from those that can prove they live in postal code "ABC2".

VanGoghsDog · 10/04/2021 10:36

Well, mine doesn't, they don't know where you live. And my mum's doesn't because I've been to hers (three hours away from me) and people on my village FB often discuss whether one or other is better and we are on the border of a unitary authority and a county and one tip is in that county and the other is in the town of the unitary authority (so not even the bit we live in technically). People decide which to go to based on how busy people say they are

That's totally normal for many people and probably on the list of endless minor health niggles that few GPs will do anything about, except suggest you drink less.

Fwiw, tips don't have catchment areas, you can go to a different one

Yes they do. Most restrict to their own council residents and some authorities impose further restrictions within the area.

I can't even go to my nearest one because it's in Kirklees and I live in the Leeds local authority area.

noblegreenk · 10/04/2021 10:40

@pheasantsinlove

I understand your anger. We have 4 old broken fence panels that need to be skipped. Apparently our local skip no longer accepts them. Where the hell am I supposed to dispose of them if not the skip?! It's ridiculous.
Well then you break them up and burn them, but your neighbours will hate you for it.
RMRM · 10/04/2021 10:44

We have a weekly collection and we can put out as many black bags and recycling bags as is reasonable. We have to pay for green bin garden waste. We don't have much fly tipping at all, but our recycling rates are pish.

I've never been to the tip, but I know someone who goes every week, so it can't be too bad.

emmetgirl · 10/04/2021 10:46

It's getting beyond a joke. If you make disposing or recycling things too difficult people won't do it. I don't understand how they don't understand this!

Chunkymenrock · 10/04/2021 10:49

It's utter, utter shit. The attitude of all tips should be "you've got waste/recycling? Bring it to us!" We have a problem with fly tipping on the mountain roads, as it's so difficult to dispose of large pieces of waste round here. It's disgusting but if tips had the right attitude, everything would be so much better.

Offer them on FB locally as 'free for firewood'
