Companies you buy from that go on to spam you every single day

Why do they do it? Does it really have the desired effect on the recipients - any of them? Companies that sell things that most people don't buy that often, but they persist in sending an email (sometimes two) every single day.

Clearly, they've realised that they can easily do it, but it doesn't seem to occur to them that, at best, their emails will cease to become 'special' in any way and, at worst, customers will ignore every one and probably unsubscribe after a few days once they realise the intention is to stalk and irritate them on a daily basis? It's not even like they have new items of interest in every day. Do they really think that every single customer cares just as much about their business and sales figures as they do?

I imagine their thinking is that they don't know on which day somebody might want/need to buy something that they sell, so they'll cover all bases by making sure that you've had an email from them whenever that day might happen to arrive. Apparently oblivious to all of their spam you have to contend with on every single other day - and also from every company that thinks this is a bright idea.

Have I misunderstood something here? Wouldn't a well-crafted email once every fortnight be welcomed much more positively and make likely customers actually look with some interest to see what's new rather than thinking "Ugh, not them again" once or twice every day, before shortly unsubscribing altogether? Why wouldn't a company want to keep customers willingly subscribed for marketing contact every fortnight/month rather than driving them to unsubscribe and lose that potential sales link altogether?

Also, if you want to go one step further you can contact the company's data protection team (again, all companies will have this and information to contact them on their website), and ask them to delete your information from everything if you wish.

ImInStealthMode · 09/04/2021 07:48

The legitimate interest thing should be clamped down on. I work in marketing for a travel company and we are all over our GDPR stuff.

As far as I'm concerned, telling someone who's booked a holiday about an excursion in their destination or a flight upgrade within an email containing actual information about their holiday, is legitimate interest. Telling them about another holiday is not.

We have double sign up, one for information pertaining to your booking, and one for marketing. Those that only want information don't get any marketing only emails.

Ps (we email weekly in normal times, at the moment it's every 2-3 weeks to avoid customer fatigue).

Not a fan here, we have a newsletter as part of our online soy candle business but it's just once a month and we try to write it in the form.of a poem where possible

Blerg · 09/04/2021 07:52

So annoying. Clarks , Yours and eBay are the worst offenders.

I hate it when the unsubscribe button takes to to an account you used years ago to sign in before you can unsubscribe.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/04/2021 07:54

@Aprilshowers34

All marketing emails have to have an unsubscribe button by law, so you can just click this if it annoys you so much. It's at the bottom of the email. Big names like Clark's, sports Direct etc will definitely have this or they would be breaking the law.

Stop moaning, click unsubscribe and get on with your life.

This does not work. I never subscribe to any marketing emails.

These days, merely looking at a website without actively going through and changing the cookies settings generates a marketing email.

I bought one thing from Land's End late last year. They have sent me two emails every single day since. I receive 5-10 marketing emails every day and I have never bought anything from most of the companies. I've usually looked at the website, decided it wasn't for me, and that's all it takes for them to email you daily for the rest of eternity.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 09/04/2021 07:57

I just block sender rather than mark as spam.
But yes, several that you just ponder why???

GiveTheGirlAGun · 09/04/2021 07:58

Yep. The Entertainer with their 'Have you found something?' And Boden with 'Caught you looking?' I keep the emails coming from Boden because when they get desperate they send me £10 off. The Entertainer, I need to remember to log out because DD likes to look.
Oh and Boots. I ordered some holiday things in 2018. They send me an email at least once a day.

dementedma · 09/04/2021 07:59

Nip and Fab spam me to death but I like their products so dont bin them. All the rest go into promotions.

MimiPigeon · 09/04/2021 08:00

Stop moaning, click unsubscribe and get on with your life
You do realise that companies who spam you constantly don’t give a shit about the law? I’m currently struggling to get unsubscribed from a company that has harassed me for a couple of years, I’ve clicked unsubscribe numerous times and it hasn’t worked. In the end I’ve resorted to reporting them and making a complaint that they’re breaking the law by not letting me unsubscribe.

KoalaOok · 09/04/2021 08:06

I don't want to unsubscribe from some of them though, just a once a month email or an email when they have a sale if it's just once a quarter. I can even deal with the % off if I make another purchase after about a month (they are quite handy). But I don't need near daily reminders about products that are only usually bought once or twice a year at most.

FlattestWhite · 09/04/2021 08:07

Yes it annoys me too, as often the emails are the only way you can get some of the good discounts! I understand that it's a trade-off for my data to get the discount, but they've got my email now, and sending me endless emails isn't going to make me buy more from them. I end up unsubscribing from the ones who do it more than about once a week for things that you're likely to buy more often (clothes etc), or once every couple of months for random shops that sell quite specific things. Surely if they had any confidence in the quality of their stuff, they'd realise that you are unlikely to be wanting more of the same thing in the next few weeks at least.

FlattestWhite · 09/04/2021 08:10

and you start to predict them, too. If I hear the computer notification in the background in the morning, I often stop what I'm doing and go see what it is, in case it's important.
But if it's 8.15, I just think, oh it's bloody Fat Face again, trying to sell me more things than they did yesterday. So I don't bother going to look.
(and I quite like FF, too, but once or twice a season, not every single day!)

bluebluezoo · 09/04/2021 08:11

I had to move to get rid of Johnny Boden. After i unsubscribed they started sending me shit in the post.

Abel and Cole are another, i had to threaten to report them to stop them phoning me constantly.

FairyDust123456 · 09/04/2021 08:16

Dunelm! Bought one thing, one time! Refuse to buy anything else from them online to teach them a lesson - petty, they won't care - ha. I'll still enjoy walking round their stores though Grin

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 09/04/2021 08:19

I signed up to the Experteer careers website. They are sending three emails per day! No option to unsubscribe! DH said I should build a filter that diverts them to another folder. Pisses me off that I have go through those lengths! I never asked for the emails in the first place!!

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 09/04/2021 08:21

I mind more about the catalogues being sent

I always carefully read the wording of the boxes to NOT tick etc

In some cases I call the companies

It puts me off online shopping with new companies.

Buy any Sarah Raven seed packs at your peril and get HUGE unwanted catalogues

Eileen101 · 09/04/2021 08:28

Cottages.com Angry every bloody day.

Took me ages to unsubscribe from Joe browns after years of catalogues and emails. Each time a catalogue arrived, I sent off an email request they stopped. They got the message after a few years.

FlyingFlamingo · 09/04/2021 08:31

New Scientist are guilty of ignoring unsubscribe requests, I’ve given up now and blocked them.

Yes also to Lands End, Boden and FatFace, as well as White Stuff, Seasalt and Saltrock.

And how many windows do Blinds2go think I have in my house that I need a daily email about blinds???

AlphabetDinosaur · 09/04/2021 08:33

@GravityFalls

I go through and have a mass unsubscribe/clean up every couple of months but they creep back in.

My worst is stuff my American namesake signs up to using my fucking email, and when I unsubscribe seems to sign back up to them - they’re just going to haunt me forever, aren’t they?

I have one of those too! I get so many booking confirmations, order notifications, medical appointments and results (I always notify the company that I am not the intended recipient!) along with all their spam.

My worst one was Unilever. Looks like they've finally stopped but it took many emails with an actual person.

BertieBotts · 09/04/2021 08:36

You normally have to untick the box saying that don't want sales and offers from them in order not to get marketing crap. I don't get too many but I always look for the box.

Another way to do it is have a second email set up and then an auto redirect on the second email account for anything with the words delivery or confirmation to forward to your main account.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/04/2021 08:41

I dont think Ive ever hit unsubscribe and not had it work. You have to be really careful to not tick the box when you order in the first place. I have a mailing list folder and set up filters for the companies I do want to hear from. Everything else goes to junk.

strawberryoilnomore · 09/04/2021 08:54

I've NCd for this (FFS that I should have to) but I've had a long running battle with The Body Shop who I absolutely refuse to give another penny to after their disgraceful and unnecessary tweet about JK Rowling.

They've made it difficult to unsubscribe without requesting various personal details and their customer service have been pissing me about with twatty replies and generally being obstructive and unhelpful. Whilst they continued sending me their crap offers and so called discounts.

It is just as well I've been documenting it all for a piece I am working on. So unless you've got a lot of time on your hands and can use the material, treat with extreme caution.

Shame they ended up like this as they used to sell lovely things although it's been shite for years now. The only bearable product which I didn't find sickly scented and gooey was a moisturiser but I've since found a better supplier Smile

Frauhubert · 09/04/2021 09:02

All of them, but one that comes to my mind first is Charlotte Tilbury. I really like their lipsticks and eye makeup but it makes like them less when i get those childish/insta emails every day with ‘darlings, my new game changing eyebrow kit has landed’ with lots of hearts and kisses emoji

Oneearringlost · 09/04/2021 09:10

@Temp023

I’m sorry, fucking Mumsnet.. I do not want a bloody text every time someone sends a message to a thread I’ve been on!
I found this, but you can go onto settings on MN and cancel this.
