What is the BEST cat repellant for the garden? 😠

We've just put in a lovely new raised bed and filled it with young plants to grow on. There aren't a huge amount of cats where we live but one is already shitting in it, as I found to my cost when I put my hand in some when digging to put in a plant.

Recommendations for the BEST cat repellants please, I haven't got the time to sit on guard with a super soaker either! We've got a dog but she's deaf, old and useless 😂

Contech scarecrow.

I've noticed there are a lot fewer cats being let out to roam the streets in recent weeks, since our village was leafleted with reports of a local cat mutilator. Time to get the printer out?

weewoman123 · 07/04/2021 20:03

My auntie used to put bottles of water around her garden as cats apparently hate their reflection. It worked for her but I don't know if it works for everyone.

Bigoldmachine · 07/04/2021 20:04

Orange peel
Sticks in criss cross hoops over the bed
I’ve heard people are successful with watering the soil with wee (even human wee!) so cats will be put off

gamerchick · 07/04/2021 20:08

I buy those plastic edging fencing from b&m and lie it in the beds with the young plants growing through the holes. The cats can't scratch at the beds then to do their business.

tabulahrasa · 07/04/2021 20:11

Another dog...

cyclingmad · 07/04/2021 20:11

I put plastic spikes up along my fence line which has helped to a degree. One cat doesn't seem to mind it too much and walks over it but the cat poo has significantly dropped, only found one dried up poo in 5 months.

Also stopped foxes too.

Novacancy3 · 07/04/2021 20:12

We've had good results with orange and lemon peel.

TheVolturi · 07/04/2021 20:21

Our own cat craps all over our garden! She's has a litter box inside but prefers to do it outside, drives me mad. We have lots of gravel that she loves, I'm slowly digging it out and getting rid so she can't do it, not very happy!

TheVolturi · 07/04/2021 20:22

Ps last summer I tried the orange peel and citrus sprays, plus laying branches over the areas, she still did it.

Woopywoopwoo · 07/04/2021 20:23

A pellet gun... only kidding 😂

I bought this about a month ago, and so far it’s working. It smells like garlic, and the vampires have gone too 😬

RiderGirl · 07/04/2021 20:24

Thank you, I will try the orange/lemon peel and plastic spikes idea. Husband suggested bringing an electric fence unit (used for horses) home to set up a perimeter to keep the buggers out, but I think that may be a bit much! Sadly DD is very allergic to cats so we couldn't have one even if I wanted one —which I dont — I don't mind cats per se but I don't want one crapping in my flowers!

I’ve had success with one of those gizmos that emits a high pitch sound humans can’t hear. Can’t remember what they’re called but search on Amazon or somewhere.

Also wooden spikes - like thin wooden kebab skewers, stuck into the soil at intervals, sharp side up.

BigWolfLittleWolf · 07/04/2021 21:05

A younger dog.
Cat proof fencing.

Some humans can hear them... they’re horrendous if you can, it’s actually painful.

Male urine. Will need to reapply after heavy rain...

Icytundra · 08/04/2021 07:20

I'd love to know too so following with interest!

RiderGirl · 08/04/2021 07:24

Younger dog - kids would love that but it's not on the agenda, we're planning on having some dog-free time when she "goes". Not sold on the sonic noise things but have seen automatic water sprayer things that look like they'd work!!

Orange peel or any citrus fruit!

MilduraS · 08/04/2021 07:42

My neighbours have covered their flowerbeds in bark ( suggested and paid for by me) to stop my cat shitting in their flower bed. I knew from my own experience that citrus didn't do anything, nor did any herbs. She was strutting around stinking of curry for weeks when I added a curry plant to my herb garden BlushThe most annoying part is that we have three clean litter trays indoors but she will only use them for weeks.

MilduraS · 08/04/2021 07:42

*wee not weeks!

TheVolturi · 08/04/2021 07:48

We tried bark! She still digs in that!
