What is the BEST cat repellant for the garden? 😠

We've just put in a lovely new raised bed and filled it with young plants to grow on. There aren't a huge amount of cats where we live but one is already shitting in it, as I found to my cost when I put my hand in some when digging to put in a plant.

Recommendations for the BEST cat repellants please, I haven't got the time to sit on guard with a super soaker either! We've got a dog but she's deaf, old and useless 😂

Honestly I found laying chicken wire on the ground stopped the cats in my garden.

Holly twigs.

It's almost stopped in my garden now the local cats have to manoeuvre around prickly holly leaves.

Oh! Holly twigs sound like a great idea.

My parents swear by chilli powder, they sprinkle it all over their garden, it makes them sneeze apparently.

GoWalkabout · 08/04/2021 08:42

None of them. Just made me more resentful and poorer. Try to deter their route in.

Poorlykitten · 08/04/2021 10:19

I think chilli powder can be immensely damaging to animals, not just cats. ☹️

@Rainallnight

I’ve had success with one of those gizmos that emits a high pitch sound humans can’t hear. Can’t remember what they’re called but search on Amazon or somewhere.

Also wooden spikes - like thin wooden kebab skewers, stuck into the soil at intervals, sharp side up.

My daughter would tell you that the cat sound think works, she can hear it and hates it.

Will say that my late MIL had one and there were no cats in her garden.

Biscuits101 · 08/04/2021 10:52

Silent roar, it's lion poo, available on Amazon or most garden centres

I have a lovely raised bed that my own cat uses one end of as a litter tray! When I plant something in it I was going to cover the top with chicken wire (it's quite a deep bed) so she could still use her 'bit' but my precious plants get protected. Depending on how much chicken wire I can obtain/scrounge/borrow/steal, I may also use it on the front grass which has been a bit of a local cat toilet (although two cats have recently moved house so problem may sort itself out!)

All those videos of cats and cucumbers on YouTube make me wonder if a rubber snake or two would work? I keep meaning to test the theory as we get lots of visitors and I hate picking up their poo.

My old cat was being bullied by two other male cats who were coming right up to the back door of the house and he was afraid to go out, or if he was out he was afraid to come in past them. I was advised to soak around the perimeter of the house/garden with urine from a larger buck than these cats were and was told to use male urine which had been left to sit for several days so it was strong and potent. This led me to have conversations with 3 my male friends with much hilarity. They each collected a weeks worth of urine each which I left in the shed for another week, this was very potent by now and walked around the perimeter of the garden morning and evening for 5 days and watered with it. After 2 days I watched the bullying cats come to the perimeter and back away cautiously watching around them, after 5 days when I ran out of urine I watched to see if they came near the house again, nope. They never crossed that invisible line for the rest of the time I lived there and never again for the duration of my cats life. My cat was able to enjoy his garden and was safe in his outside spaces. It was also animal safe and free. I used 2 litres milk cartons for my friends.
