Recommend me a mug

I need to get a new mug for taking in to work and with, you know, the whole "covid" situation I can't really go in to shops and man handle the mugs like I normally would when choosing one.

What mugs do you have that hold a good amount of coffee, isn't too expensive (because this will be a work mug) but has a good feeling in your hand - so a good sturdy handle, comfortable etc.

I have a couple of favourite mugs at home but I refuse to take them in to school with me in case anything bad happens to them, and they're not part of a range so I can't just go and get a duplicate of either of them Sad.

Thank you, wise tea and coffee drinkers of MN!

I really like Cath Kidstone mugs and have quite a collection of them. They are a good size, last forever and feel nice to drink from. I usually buy them in the sale for about £5.

We buy the Le Crueset mugs when we can find them in TK Maxx. Very robust, nice range of colours, fits a decent amount in.

Have a look at Moorland Pottery:

Also the obvious Emma Bridgewater:

If it's to be 'not too expensive' I'd probably just pick one up in the supermarket, rather than pay £20+ (WTF?) for a fancy one.

PembrokeshireDreaming · 06/04/2021 15:26

I have a few Roy Kirkham ones...........I love the breakfast cup, it's a fine bone china cup but it's the size of a mug!

I pick them up on ebay.........or make suggestions around mothers day!!!

Fivemoreminutes1 · 06/04/2021 15:28

I like the Cath Kidston Stanley mugs

That's interesting. They're ones I've liked the look of but have no idea what they actually feel like to hold.

I realise how stupid that sounds but I'm really easily spooked by a crap mug or one that has a really flimsy feeling handle. I am competent in other areas of life, I promise Grin

Why not take one of your mugs from home that isn't a particular favourite but that is adequate? Surely you own more than two mugs that don't frighten you.

I get it about not liking some mugs, but for one that is just to get you through the day and you won't be upset if it gets broken in your bag, use what you already have.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/04/2021 16:08

I have a Le Crueset mug, I got mine from an outlet store, when such a thing was actually open.

It feels nice and solid to hold, I don't like flimsy mugs, bone china ones or anything that's a fancy shape.

Careful if buying online, because they sell espresso mugs and cappucino mugs as well as full size 'teacher needs lots of coffee mugs' and they all look the same, but obviously the espresso mugs are teeny tiny. You want the 350 ml one.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/04/2021 19:41

The Le Crueset ones are chunky. Very good.

Sprig1 · 06/04/2021 19:45

Surprisingly Morrisons do a couple of good mugs. I have a few bone china ones from there with birds on. They are a good size and shaped like Emma Bridgewater mugs. It being a supermarket you could even go and have a hold yourself to see if you like them.

ConnieCaterpillar70 · 06/04/2021 19:48

I use a thermal mug. Keeps your drinks hot as you can bet your arse the phone rings the moment you make a brew, and it can't ever get smashed.

I've got a Bodum one that has a rubberised middle section to hold it. Think it was around £11 and I use it every day at work.

PandaBabyJuly · 06/04/2021 19:50

Cath Kidston! I love them

Giantrooster · 06/04/2021 19:54

Pukka mug or Greengate (floral ones).

CongealedCrags · 06/04/2021 20:00

I have been known to measure the liquid content of my favourite mug and use that as a search term on John Lewis. I favour a 400 ml brew, and what's known as a jug shape.

But you can't beat a contigo byron travel mug for keeping tea warm.

RevolvingPivot · 06/04/2021 20:02

Asda mugs are great. He have a cat flamingo sloth Kuala shape.

AdaThorne · 06/04/2021 20:06

I fell in love with this mug and bought myself one during lockdown. It brings me such joy because it is chunky, a great size, the print reminds me of the sea and it’s posh (well for me!) Denby but I bought it free with Tesco Clubcard points. I see it as my reward for booking all those bloody click and collect slots at midnight.

I also recommend checking out what is on offer in your supermarket when you are in anyway. You can check their weight and how they feel, they tend to be a good price, and they have some lovely ones.

Katyy · 06/04/2021 20:14

Ada love that mug too ! Morrison’s have cheap bone China in a seaside theme if that floats your boat 🤣

AnnaSW1 · 06/04/2021 20:32

I used to love my Kath Kidston work mug until I got an Emma Bridgewater one. It's in a whole different league. I love drinking my coffee from this mug!!!

LemonDrizzles · 08/04/2021 20:33

Hi there, I have no recommendations for brands as my work one was a Royal Doulton available from Waitrose via Ocado and about a fiver and in teal.

Reason for choosing? teal was a unique colour in the office so I knew it wouldn't be confused with others. The Royal Doulton one happened to be a good size. The inside was light enough that you could see if it had tea stains (I used to have a black mug...) Day one, someone used it on their desk in an office of just 30 people!

Pearbear · 08/04/2021 20:57

They’re a bit pricey but Cornishware mugs are lovely. They’re chunky and hard to break and you can get them personalised so it will stand out and no one else will be pinching your mug

Blankiefan · 08/04/2021 21:09

I was bought an Emma Bridgewater. It's a great size, nice to drink from and solid enough that it can take a few knocks.

WallyHilloby · 08/04/2021 21:09

What's wrong with a Sports Direct bucket?

If you know, you know Wink
