What used car? Q7 X5 Land rover?

Looking at getting roughly 2012 reg. need a big boot which I know the Q7 has. Really can't decide which to go for.

Essentialgarage · 06/04/2021 08:02

Honestly? None of those unless you enjoy spending money on repairs. The Q7 tyres are over £1000 for 4, when anyone of them goes wrong they cost a fortune, IMHO if you can only afford a 2012 you can't afford the running costs.

rainbowthoughts · 06/04/2021 08:03

If your only criteria is a big boot you should widen your options.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/04/2021 08:11

Do you need a 4X4?

I agree that a car that age is likely to cost a fortune to run - road tax, fuel consumption, servicing and repairs.

A Skoda Octavia has a massive boot, is a great car to drive and you'll get a far newer one for the same money.

@Essentialgarage what would you recommend then?

OP posts:
BlueEyedPony · 06/04/2021 08:19

@rainbowthoughts we already have an estate, that boot isn't big enough for what we need. I'm open to suggestions

@BarbaraofSeville we already have an estate, the Skoda Octavia boot isn't any bigger than what we already have.

You will be able to get a newer car with cheaper cost of repairs if you dont go for those premium brands.

WhatAreWordsWorth · 06/04/2021 09:16

Agree with other posters. It would make SO much more sense to buy a newer car (without the premium badge), which will definitely cost you less in repairs/running costs.

Depending on your budget, Seat Ateca, Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage are all worth a look if you want a 4x4 with decent boot space.

idontlikealdi · 06/04/2021 09:19

Vauxhall zafira

MrsAmaretto · 06/04/2021 09:22

Mitshibushi L200 or get a van. Around here (rural) more and more families are buying things that look like transit vans but have seats behind the driver seats, then the back is a proper van. If you need lots of space that is the answer.

MrsAmaretto · 06/04/2021 09:24

Just googled, it’s called a double cab.

Essentialgarage · 06/04/2021 09:26

Big boot but what else do you need?

BlueEyedPony · 06/04/2021 09:27

I have a bmw 3 series 500L boot which isn't big enough.

I've picked the cars in my original post due to boot size.
These are all smaller than what I have or only a tiny bit bigger.

Kia Sportage 467L boot
Quashqai 430
Seat Aztec 510

I'm happy to go with a different brand but boot size has to be much bigger.

Q7 is 865 for example. I've picked these cars specially due to boot size, not necessarily the brand.

SEAT Alhambra with rear seats folded.

Matilda1981 · 06/04/2021 09:56

I’ve got a 2012 Q7 and I love it!! A previous poster mentioned tyres being £250 each - ive just had 4 news ones at £110 each so not horrific.

Better than a discovery and cheaper to buy than an XC90.

idontlikealdi · 06/04/2021 10:04

645 for the Zafira, it was the biggest we could find at the time when we had baby twins and all their crap and dogs to cart around.

What do you need to get in the boot?

AppletonP · 06/04/2021 10:08

XC90. They seem to be more reliable than the Audi but not as fun to drive.

NewUser123456789 · 06/04/2021 10:12

A Skoda Superb is the best answer followed by the Mercedes E-class. Their boots are as big as any SUV, they drive much better, are more reliable and much cheaper to maintain. If you need any more space than that then you need a van.

ivelostmymarbles · 06/04/2021 10:22

I wouldn't buy a German car for that price that is 9 years old ever. I've recently sold my BMW X3 as it approached its 5th year and nearly 50 thousand miles. These cars start causing expensive problems once they reach 50 thousand miles or are over 5 years old. A 2012 X5 or Q7 would get you an much younger, newer and excellent reliable Japanese car and I'd go for that if I were you (Honda SUV's or Nissan's).

BlueEyedPony · 06/04/2021 10:31

@idontlikealdi double travel system. No chance it'll fit in our bmw 3 series estate boot. If we ever want to go away we'd need to take 2 cars if we can't find something with a much larger boot.

I can’t stand Q7’s, they look so dated and are such flabby looking, ugly cars! Discos are way way better in every sense.
supersonicginandtonic · 06/04/2021 10:35

What on Earth are you taking to need such a big boot? I've got 6 children. 2 of them still in pushchairs and we camp and can manage with the small boot space on our VW transporter and a roof box.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/04/2021 10:35

I think I'd be looking for a new 'travel system' rather than a new car that costs £££s to buy and run unless there's additional needs to consider.

FeistySheep · 06/04/2021 10:36

Is it just occasionally you'll need the extra space then? What about a small box trailer for trips away? Much cheaper than upsizing your whole car. Or roofbox?
not sure how big your travel system is! my friend had a double buggy in the boot of her hatchback...

MrsAmaretto · 06/04/2021 12:36

Are boot sizes in litres not worked out if you fill the boot from top to bottom jam packed? So you would be better going and having a look at some of these vehicles to compare. My Mondeo saloon had a far larger boot than my zafira for example when it came to putting in a buggy. A BMW 3 series estate doesn’t have a large boot in my mind compared to many other cars.

Also if it’s only for 1 weekend a month you’d be better off with a roofbox.
