Will an air purifier help my hayfever?

Ohdoleavemealone · 05/04/2021 09:34

Every day during hayfever season, as soon as I wake, whether at 3am or 7am, I start sneezing which stops me getting back to sleep.
DH has suggested an air purifier. Is this likely to make a difference?

If you’ve landed here looking for air purifier recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best air purifier page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I have wondered this too, as my son suffers bay at bedtime and ends up sneezy.

I've priced them and I think there are varying degrees of filtration, but I'm nervous to buy one as they are expensive (his room is quite large so we would need a bigger unit).

Interested to see if anyone has had any experience

MyPatchworkQuilt · 05/04/2021 11:56

I bought one on ebay for 160.

Feel like crap today with hayfever. Will be using it today. Will report back.

Mine does, yes. It's quite an expensive model - Phillips and about £500 - but I found it entirely worth it.

WhatMattersMost · 05/04/2021 12:08

This is the one I bought.

Crazzzycat · 05/04/2021 12:17

Yes it will make a difference!

I was sceptical about spending that much money, but less than a week after buying my first one, I bought a second one, so that I can have one in my bedroom and one downstairs. Both of mine are Philips

MyPatchworkQuilt · 05/04/2021 12:58

I've used sodium conglomerate for my eyes and had that filter on for an hour and I do feel less stuffy. Mine is a Vax.

Ohdoleavemealone · 05/04/2021 12:59

Thanks everyone. Not sure I can afford £500 but I will have a look around.
It must disturb DH as well or he wouldn't have mentioned it.

I would recommend asking your doctor to prescribe steroid nasal spray. It’s not for everyone but has totally changed my life. 40 years of hayfever banished!

ThePontiacBandit · 05/04/2021 13:17

I got one last summer because I had an awful asthma flare up. It definitely helped. Most don’t cool the room (unless you fork out for a Dyson etc) so I bought a cheap fan too. I got a Levoit purifier which was about £70.

Blueuggboots · 05/04/2021 13:21

We've got a cheap one in my son's room and it's stopped his incessant cough at night.

DaisyDreaming · 05/04/2021 13:25

I considered getting one for a relative but their bedroom is really cluttered. From everything I’ve read you really need to be able to wipe it all down daily to reduce the pollen and that combined with the filter can really help

NotOnMute · 05/04/2021 13:27

It helps a bit, but for me needs to be combined with antihistamine pills, asthma puffers and eye drops to get a good night’s sleep.

I already take loads on anthistamine but might look into eye drops. Thanks.

Really interesting to read your positive experiences as I've just ordered a Philips 2000i for my son's bedroom. He has (allergic?) rhinitis & hayfever plus we suspect he's allergic to out new cat, so anything that can ease his symptoms has to be good.

KatharinaRosalie · 05/04/2021 21:35

If it's for bedroom then this IKEA one has good reviews. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/foernuftig-air-purifier-white-10461963/

VictoriaBun · 05/04/2021 21:38

We have one a Blue Air one, it's around £160 ish , works well. You can put it into night mode so it's silent.

Basicbitching · 05/04/2021 21:56

I have a vax one and honestly it's amazing! It's made a huge difference

jazzandh · 05/04/2021 22:02

I don't think they banish pollen completely, but I do think they help to a degree.

DH starts symptoms in February and wakes nightly with sneezing and wheezing.

With full medication (he takes fexofenadine, nasal spray and a ventolin when wheezy) the dyson air purifier assists to a degree. He wakes less sneezing than he did without it. It doesn't eliminate all symptoms though, whilst he is most allergic. (Tree pollen).

It works better during the summer when his symptoms are less extreme, but I keep the room cool and filtered, so that if he gets "bad" symptoms, he can go and calm down.

Elouera · 05/04/2021 22:14

Mine helps- yes.

I did a huge amount of research before buying one. Some are better for allergies with a HEPA filter, others are more for chemicals/fumes, whilst other are better for car fumes. The price along with performace ranges vastly. Many of the cheaper models will struggle to provide any noticable filtration in even a small room. You can then end up needing a machine in each room!

I bought an IQAir one, which is Swiss made and was close to £1,200. Alot I know, but we were living on a very busy, central london road with a bus stop at the window! The change in air quality and smell was remarkable and our model was sufficient for a large, 2 bed flat.

Appliances direct often have refurbished or B grade models, but I don't know how good their models are.

Stratfordplace · 05/04/2021 22:27

Roseyoldcrow if your sonis allergic to the cat then you will have to get rid of the cat. Your son’s allergies will not just magically improve even with an air purifier. If the cat is anywhere in the house and your don has an allergy your son will be uncomfortable and unwell. I’m a lifelong allergy sufferer.

I subscribed on a trial to “Which” magazine as the price and efficacy of air purifiers was turning into a bit more of a project than I envisaged. I have 2 electriQ ones. One medium and one large for the main reception rooms for the bed rooms www.amazon.co.uk/Purifier-Portable-Purifiers-Aromatherapy-Function/dp/B07X2132WF/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=electriq+air+purifier&pf_rd_p=7c89f663-1851-4f5c-ad06-b2fd7b71af3e&pd_rd_wg=Qc1aH&pf_rd_r=D1P317BFZ1JWT68B9A98&pd_rd_w=lrWuu&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1617655995&pd_rd_r=6e268f44-8c00-4040-a73f-fddf69435ac5&sr=8-5 you need them to have true hepa filters at the very least price does not equal quality in this field - I was shocked at some of the consumer test levels considering the purchase prices involved. The medium electriQ < with the oval top> I saw on offer just around 110 quid from almost under 200 rrp so please do shop around. Kids watch tv in our bedroom where the 30 to 40 quid would be plugged in and I knew they were effective when the kids unplugged them and took to their rooms when tv time was over. The link looks exactly the same as I ordered, now a different trading name, but look exactly the same - thousands of reviews for them too. The blue light annoyed my Husband but I think the last one allowed you to turn off light. Something worth considering perhaps when choosing. I remember there was something to do with checking cheap smaller ones and ozone production it was a bleeding minefield sifting through them. I picked an Amazon fulfilled seller for the small ones - no unexpected charges or long delivery dates. Our particular hayfever issue was tree pollen last year.

hellcatspangle · 05/04/2021 22:37

You can buy them over the counter.

PopAyetheSailorMam · 05/04/2021 22:44

Re previous response the bedroom ones were ‘good enough’ as we live in the ‘burbs. Not near main roads in a green commuter area so our general air quality I would consider good-ish. We mainly wanted the pollen addressed, not road/traffic pollution.

RoseyOldCrow · 05/04/2021 23:54

@Stratfordplace Oh bugger!
