Obviously ages of DC can determine how far is far. But if your DC are 8+ how far is your long walk?

Our children are grown up now but three of them still walk. Eldest and youngest walk long distances a lot.

We regularly took them on walks around 5/6 miles but sometimes longer 8/10 miles. Depending on the terrain. Mainly walked in the Lake District and North Yorkshire / Yorkshire Dales.

Three boys and a DD. DS1 then 2years 8mths DS2,then 5years2 mths DS3,then 5Years10mths DD.
So different needs you would think. Planned a long walk because the boys wanted to walk the length of Ullswater. So we took a carrier for DD then approx 2 1/2 years. We walked from Glennridding to Patterdale and then along the Lake to Howtown and caught the steamer back. In all about 8mile. She went in the carrier once for about 10 minutes. As a late teen she walked the Cumbria Way with her best friend. We did have to rescue the rucksack as they took too much and found them too heavy. DH and I have walked it and it is difficult in parts especially if the weather is against you.

I think if you start children walking from a young age then enjoy it and will walk quite a long way but if they are not used to walking a good distance then they may find it difficult. It also depends on the walk and the terrain. Suitable footwear and the weather can also be important.

DD is 11. We walked for 2 1/2 hours today. I am not sure how far in km. We had a short break and a sit down. It was very hilly and I was shattered.

If I take the pushchair we could easily do 2 hours and 6 miles! If we went without the pushchair we would manage 0.5 miles and we would have been asked about 1,000,000 times for a carry! They're 3&1 so I'll let them off!

We did around 7.5-8 miles with 12yr old yesterday. He did complain but I think it’s more about boredom. If we let him navigate, geocache, take pictures, talk for a solid 2 yrs about the merits of the various underground lines, it’s not so bad. He was tired by last mile but we all were.

For those interested this is them. They are a good price and have about 15 walks in. They are all fairly recent so no major footpath diversions but check how much are along the roadside before deciding.
