'We went for a long walk' ... how far is this with your family?

Obviously ages of DC can determine how far is far. But if your DC are 8+ how far is your long walk?

If it’s just us then I don’t get much more than 45 mins out of my 8yr old dd - not keen on being outside for the sake of it! With friends she would happily be out for 2 hours.

WhereDidYouGetThatHat · 04/04/2021 18:53

Ours would be 5 miles but there would usually be complaints!

We use the book series 'Walks for all ages' and SIL says it is rubbish because all walks are too long for her 10 and 12 year old. They start at around 2 miles!
I thought I'd ask to gauge who was right....SIL or the book? Wink

My 8 year old hates walking. We maybe manage a couple of miles, but frankly, she’s miserable with bursts of having fun. If we go with others she’ll plod on for quite a while - a couple of hours, but if it’s just me and her, well, fifteen minutes and she’s done.

fiorentina · 04/04/2021 18:57

Probably 7-8 km for a longer walk. Our DS10 would go a lot further, DD7 not so keen!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 04/04/2021 18:57

honestly, i can't get mine to do more than 5k locally without complaining and becoming bad company. If we're on holiday, and there's cake involved, 10-15k is mysteriously ok. Basically our problem is not stamina, but attitude.

Mrsfrumble · 04/04/2021 19:00

20km or so. DCs are 8 and 10. We don’t have a car, so they’re used to walking everywhere. Any further and the 8yo would whinge, but the 10yo has ADHD and is like the Duracell bunny; he can just keep going!

idontlikealdi · 04/04/2021 19:02

More than 5k, we have a dog who needs to walk. I suspect if we didn't have said dog, it'd be about 5 minutes.

PickAChew · 04/04/2021 19:06

Anything over an hour. Ds2 is hypermobile (as am I) and he really starts to flag after 4 or 5km, particularly if we're heading uphill - which the home stretch of the walk inevitably is. He's bigger than me so chivvying him along gets to be a bit of an effort.

NoPinkPlease · 04/04/2021 19:06

We've had to build up from 5k. Mine are 10 and 13 and just today managed 8.5 miles with hardly any whingeing! It has taken time to build them up - and lots of good picnics!

Everyday21 · 04/04/2021 19:06

I walk with my 5yo and 2yo, 2 miles most days. 3miles is a long one for my 2yo atm. My 5yo will happily do 4miles if 2yo isnt there

AlexaShutUp · 04/04/2021 19:06

Teenage dd and I do a lot of walking. Our most common "standard" walk is around 8km. A "long walk" would be anything over around 12-15km. We often do much more than that, and walk for many hours because we both enjoy it.

I'd have thought most 10yo and 12yos should easily be able to manage 5m or so. 2m is nothing!

Concestor · 04/04/2021 19:14

Mine are 6 and 11 and 2-3 miles maximum is what I can get out of them before they moan, and it can't be just a straight walk, they need a break in the middle. In time, they can last 90 minutes before moaning.

takingmytimeonmyride · 04/04/2021 19:20

8 miles, but my lot (who are older now) have grown up hiking so are used to long walks. Doesn't mean they didn't moan, but they could do it.

2 miles! My lot walk 1.5miles to school every day!

It's really boring atm having to stay local and not having a pub garden to sit in half way or at the end, so our walks haven't been as long.

Foxhasbigsocks · 04/04/2021 19:21

6 miles plus

Yellowbowlbanana · 04/04/2021 19:22

Anything that takes over a couple of hours would be a long walk in our house I reckon.

Foxhasbigsocks · 04/04/2021 19:22

The book is right!

Cannotgarden · 04/04/2021 19:23

With a 6 year old and a 20 month old it can be 2 hours if going somewhere we can use the pram.but otherwise it's about 30 mins as 20 month old wants carrying a fair bit and my back can't take it

MargaretThursday · 04/04/2021 19:23

End of the driveway (teens)

SuperintendentHastings · 04/04/2021 19:23

OP you know you're going to have people saying that anything under 15 miles is a pathetic effort. 😆

Nutrigrainygoodness · 04/04/2021 19:27

Dd is 11. Normal walk is about 5km or an hour.
We were doing walks of 12km once a week in lockdown. Would have gone further but I cannot wee in the wild 😂

LemonRoses · 04/04/2021 19:27

At eight plus it would be a six hour hike in the lakes or across Dartmoor. They climbed Causey at about six. Not sure in terms of miles, but they could certainly do a circumnavigation of Derwentwater which must be about ten miles. They had their rucksack, their boots, their sticks and their water bottles and managed just fine. On a good day we’d take swimmers and pop into a tarn, a river or the lake to freshen up half way.

Must have liked it because the eldest is choosing to do it for their honeymoon.

Mayvis · 04/04/2021 19:28

Anything over 6 miles. The longest they’ve walked is 13 miles in a day (aged 5&8 at the time) but that was with breaks and wasn’t meant to be that long. Grin

2 miles doesn’t feel long enough, 3-4 miles is our usual daily walk.

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 04/04/2021 19:32

We walk LOADS (nothing else to do these days) with DCs 14, 11 and 8 (ADHD so echoing the Duracell Bunny comment up thread) plus Ddogs. Anything over 7 miles (is hilly round here) is considered a Long Walk although they have done further.

Love walking but would quite like to mix it up a bit!
