I've been making this baby blanket for ages but I'm a bit rubbish at crocheting and I've messed it up. It's trapeze shaped, I must have dropped stitches as I've gone along!

I've tried to do multiple things to repair it by going down the sides but I fear I've made it worseBlush

I'll include a pic of the whole blanket, then one to show how awfully misshapen it is, then one of my 'repairs.'

Any advice to save it would be much appreciated.

Add a border all the way around. Then gently block it to make it more square/rectangle.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 31/03/2021 21:40

It’s really easy to miss crocheting a stitch into the last stitch of the row in crochet. However yours isn’t too bad. And the most important thing is that it’s made with love.

First off block it by making it damp and pinning it into the shape you want and leave it to dry. I use foam play mats or you could use a big bit of cardboard. See if that helps.

Well done on making a blanket. It’s a big project and you’ve done really well.

Jaffajam · 31/03/2021 21:42

You’re not rubbish OP! I would also recommend possibly blocking it lightly then adding a border and then blocking again once the border is on. Don’t be despondent!

It looks lovely. My first blanket was a real bodge job that fell apart a few years later🤣 I was ever so proud at the time though and so should you be.

You could block it. So wet the blanket, pin it in to the correct shape and leave it to dry. Should straighten it a bit. I use foam playmat tiles I got cheap off Amazon but you can use your bed or towels. Need lots of pins.

Also, a border might help.

Gruntwork · 31/03/2021 21:47

It looks lovely: really soft and snuggly. Any slight wonkiness won't show when it's in use, and anyway - it's handmade!

Agree with others: some light blocking will make a world of difference, and a picot edging would look divine.

Well done - it's a real labour of love.

badatcrochet1996 · 31/03/2021 21:51

Thank you for the kind wordsSmile

I hadn't heard of blocking so will give that a go. I am already doing a bit of a boarder so will continue with that.

I was going to have a go at a scalloped edge but not sure how to do that yet. I'm sure there will be a YouTube tutorial for it somewhere though.

Thanks

I think it’s lovely and I would have happily wrapped my baby in it. I had hand knitted blankets for my babies and they are the only ones I’ve kept for them. It was so nice wrapping them in something that had been made by hand by someone special.

PleaseStopExplaining · 31/03/2021 22:55

I knit and crochet. When I was learning I read something that said every project should have a mistake in it to prove it’s handmade.

Your blanket is lovely. Blocking will help. Another way to do it is to pin it then steam it (use your iron but don’t let the iron touch the yarn)

BlackeyedSusan · 31/03/2021 23:13

personally, I would add a thicker border in uk double crochet. (at least four rounds. it covers a multitude of sins. then block.

counting as you go is a pain in the arse but does help with the number of stitches. I can't keep the stitch count consistent. you learn tricks to fake it.

CoffeethenCrochet · 31/03/2021 23:18

Border and block it. Then you'll have a beautiful blanket. Checkout the final round of the Attic 24 Aria Blanket border for an easy and pretty rounded edge to finish (similar to scallop). Attic 24 does such fab step by step tutorials and it's all free on her blog. Good luck Smile

badatcrochet1996 · 01/04/2021 11:31

Ooh thank you that sounds good @CoffeethenCrochet I'll have a look at that.

Thanks all! Your replies have been really helpful! I feel better about my blanket now Grin

Thought I'd update with the finished product.

The edges have gone quite frilly, not sure why but hey! Gives it character.

Want to try doing a zig zag blanket next and will experiment with some colour!

Thanks for the advice all

That is sooo good! Well done!!

IamEarthymama · 21/04/2021 22:39

I have made two of these Attic24 blankets
The pattern is easy to follow and I found it to be a very meditative process.

NannyR · 21/04/2021 22:39

Wow, that is beautiful!!!

aliasname · 21/04/2021 22:41

That looks lovely! The edges are frilly because you have too many stitches, but it could easily be passed off as a deliberate frill.

I've been crocheting for years ~ but only got really good in the last 9 months due to lockdown boredom. Its just practice.

CrochetBug · 21/04/2021 22:42

That looks great! We've got a longish running thread over in arts and crafts. Come and join us. Smile if you want to that is! It's not an order Grin

steppemum · 21/04/2021 22:44

It looks beautiful with its frill. Looks deliberate!

I'm doing a blanket, I only taught myself to crochet last year, I'm doing a giant granny square & then will edge it in double crochet. I've used 3 × 150g balls of double knit, the kind that changes colour, my blanket is approx 1.5m square up to now in charcoal ombre wool.

That looks like an attic24 pattern? Pretty colours.
reprehensibleme · 22/04/2021 00:04

The edging finishes it off beautifully - it looks lovely. Blocking is a Pita but it makes a huge difference to the finished look of a piece and is well worth doing - as pp said, the foam floor play mats are perfect for the job.

badatcrochet1996 · 22/04/2021 17:48

Thanks all! I quite like it.

@IamEarthymama that's lovely, interesting stitch!

@CrochetBug ooh I didn't realise, I'll have a look now, thanks

I missed out this...
Your blanket is lovely xx

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 22/04/2021 18:16

It look lovely with the frilly edge!

I do blankets using squares that are then put together. I don't enjoy doing long row after long row. I need little 'wins' along the way.
