Tonic water just over a month past its 'best before' date. Use or bin ?

I haven't used tonic since last September but my G&T season starts tomorrow. Should I buy fresh or give it a go ? It's seven small cans of regular Schweppes, BTW. Ta.

Use!

Whatwouldscullydo · 31/03/2021 16:43

I'd use it. But then I'd probably also buy more gin to justify buying more in date tonic too Grin

Mumdiva99 · 31/03/2021 16:44

Use it. It will be fine.

Chewbecca · 31/03/2021 16:45

Definitely drink if it is in cans, they last forever!

I’m liking the sound of G&T season.

halcyondays · 31/03/2021 16:45

It’ll be fine.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 31/03/2021 16:45

Oooh, gin and tonic. Mmmmm.

Yes, use it, obvs.

fitflopqueen · 31/03/2021 16:46

Ambient product, as unopened it should be fine. You can now buy such items ie just out of date, big warehouse has opened not too far away from us. Lots of BBE products which have gone over and are absolutely fine. I bought tonic water - dated last October - no difference.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 31/03/2021 16:46

I wouldn't drink tonic water even when bought brand new, personally, but it's only a 'best before' date - not a 'certain death after' date Grin

merryhouse · 31/03/2021 16:50

We massively cut down our alcohol so haven't had gin for ages, and a few months ago I decided to use up the old tonic water. There was a bottle dated 2017. It was fine.

Susie477 · 31/03/2021 16:52

Definitely use. ‘Best before’ ≠ ‘use by’.

I completely ignore best before dates.

WildRosie · 31/03/2021 17:00

Thankyou all. I concur.

My G&T season is April to September. Beer or sherry or nice sparkling wine are my preferred aperitif during Autumn and Winter.

I've also discovered a box of unopened Lyons coffee bags with a BBE of January 2021. They're all in individual foil bags so should be ok. Hope so coz they're quite expensive now.

it Best Before! not - Kill you after !!

expectopelargonium · 31/03/2021 17:57

Last time I found some out-of-date cans of tonic, they were as flat as a pancake, so I'd buy more just to be on the safe side.

Sirzy · 31/03/2021 17:59

Just add a bit more gin to it to be sure!

TheDoctorDances · 31/03/2021 18:01

It’ll be fine. Down the hatch!

Janaih · 31/03/2021 18:04

Dh has got 5 cases of out of date tonic (October 20) that he purchased from the local discount warehouse. Its fine. He certainly gets through it quick enough.

This is why we need so much more education about food waste in this country although maybe I've missed that this isn't a serious thread

What could possibly happen to foil wrapped coffee that would mean you couldn't drink for years?

savanahnana · 31/03/2021 18:17

Use it it'll be fine! I've got bottles of it in my fridge that are probably much older than that which I'll still use.

WildRosie · 31/03/2021 20:47

Fortunately, I don't have to buy any gin as I have most of a bottle of Tanqueray left over from last season. I also have lime and clear, hard ice.

I don't anticipate any disappointment with the coffee bags.

You might need to buy some new stuff.
I had some unopened lemonade which was BB July this year (so still with 4 months to go) and it was flat.

WildRosie · 31/03/2021 21:21

Opening one can before adding to gin should quickly establish whether or not the tonic is good to go or for the drain.

Mum2jenny · 31/03/2021 21:24

Just use the tonic, it’ll be fine.

ConnieDobbs · 31/03/2021 21:26

I had some of the aldi ones that were about 6 months out of date and unfortunately they were flat Sad

Fuckingcrustybread · 31/03/2021 21:27

Help! What's leftover Gin? Asking for a friend

Emmelina · 31/03/2021 21:30

It’ll taste fine and won’t harm you, but will probably be flat.
