I have just walked 0.5 miles and I'm about to collapse

I weigh 16 stone. Do zero exercise. I am desperate to lose weight. I have just made myself go for a 10 minute walk. I walked 0.5 miles. I am breathing like an asthmatic heavy smoking whale, my back hips bum and feet are hurting and I'm sweating like a pig 🐖

@ARoseDowntown

And the best is yet to come. When you’ve reached your target you will feel invincible. You will feel that if you can do this, you can do anything.

Nothing but good can come from this. Keep going!!

That's made me cry but in a sort of good way. The reason I want to lose weight and get fit is to have a baby. Won't be an easy path for me to get pregnant but losing weight will make it just that little bit easier, I hope.

Well done, I bet you’re feeling proud of yourself. I find my fitness tracker really helps.

I went out for a walk with the kids today (we’re on Easter hols now) so my pace was much slower but figured going slower was better than nothing?? I was initially frustrated but gave myself a talking to. We went 3.3km.

KeyboardWorriers · 31/03/2021 23:09

1.2 miles is fabulous Grin.keep going. I find if I go every day at the same time then my body starts to need to exercise at that time which helps.

BlackeyedSusan · 31/03/2021 23:19

well done you. I can do 0.5 miles on a good day. one day last week getting up the stairs was difficult. you are already beating me, well done.

picklemewalnuts · 01/04/2021 09:10

Ludo, I started last October trying to get 2k steps every day. I'm up to 5k steps now, and am able to do 10k three times a week.

Don't increase if you feel bad, though- you may regret it next day! Better to increase gradually and consistently than rush it and have to slow down again!

Also, I got a mini trampoline and walk on there while watching tv. It's great for getting steps up when the weather is rubbish, and there's much less impact so it doesn't hurt like walking can!

BogRollBOGOF · 01/04/2021 10:33

Fantastic progress OP!

If you're feeling it today, have an "active rest" session of gently doing your original walk for a day or two before pushing it again. It's a technique used in running, but you're developing your fitness in the same kind of way.

Kotatsu · 01/04/2021 10:42

2 years ago I was 16 stone (and I'm only 5 foot, so I was basically a round ball of a woman), and yes, walking was a lot of effort.

Today I am just under 14 stone, and can alternately run and walk 5k every day - the difference just losing that 2 stone made is enormous even though there were months in there where I did nothing, and months when I was walking an hour a day, I just felt so much better.

I'm pushing at the moment as I want to re-start weightloss - so I do the 5k in the morning, then I get on a static bike in the evening once the kids are in bed for another 30-45 mins. But like I tell the kids - I listen to my body. If my body is telling me to walk today rather than run, then that's what I do. If I get on the bike and it just feels wrong, then I don't do it that evening, and if I need to I take a day off entirely and don't beat myself up about it, because I know recovery is important to.

You're on a great start - it's fantastic when it all clicks and you start to feel better - my moment was when I realised I'd forgotten to buy milk when I was already at the till, so sprinted back to get it and wasn't even winded! I was grinning all the drive back home!

sniffysnifferson · 01/04/2021 12:18

10 mins is a lot more than zero mins! It's tough to get started moving more, but you will soon feel the benefit and be able to go further and longer. Consistency and perseverance!

rjacksmiss · 01/04/2021 12:19

Well done OP!!! ❤️❤️

ARoseDowntown · 01/04/2021 18:09

Good luck to you, OP. You’re taking control of your life and your future, and making good decisions. Keep at it. Often, lifestyle changes snowball: you start to exercise and before you know it you feel vitalised and motivated to do more. So you overhaul your diet, maybe pick up a sporting hobby and end up making new friends. You’re opening up a raft of new possibilities and openings.

Cindersrellie · 01/04/2021 18:17

You've already more than doubled your distance! I'm so proud of you!

Sobloodyexhausted · 01/04/2021 18:26

You’ve done really well! My tip as a larger lady myself is don’t overestimate the number of layers you need when exercising especially when it’s milder like it is now. If I go out in a coat or jacket at the moment I get way too hot once I start moving and it makes the exercise session miserable: I always feel hot and out of puff much more quickly. If you are waking fast /jogging you may only need a vest top with a light jogging top.

JSL52 · 01/04/2021 22:00

@LudoBear

Ahh didn't think people would be replying still haha. Fitbit came at 1.30. Since then I've walked 2500 steps / 1.2 miles. I went for a walk around local park. Feeling really exhausted today though.
🥳
Outbutnotoutout · 03/04/2021 19:26

How have you done today?

HotelCaliforniaOnRepeat · 03/04/2021 20:12

@LudoBear don't make my mistake! Make sure you wear good socks / shoes. I've started doing 3km walk most days when I get home from work. It's well worth it, hoping it will start to get easier.
My walk has an elevation of 40m so this hills help to make it worthwhile. Once I find this one easier I'm going to either go further or start adding in jogging.
🙌🏻 We can do this

LudoBear · 05/04/2021 15:10

I am so proud of myself! Look! 2.24 miles. I'm going to go collapse on sofa now until next week!

  • [Message from MNHQ: Ludo we've removed your map pic as we've had a few reports from people worried it could out you]

Yay!

OverByYer · 05/04/2021 16:03

Well done OP, the hardest part is getting out of the door. It’s good that you recognise that you need to get fit and that you have made progress already. Stick with it ( and don’t beat yourself up if you miss the odd day here and there)

Laeta · 05/04/2021 16:53

Hey OP I've easily worked out where you from your picture. You may want it deleted. I've reported it.

And amazing work by the way!!

AvaAvocado · 05/04/2021 17:01

Well done @LudoBear, you're an inspiration Easter Smile

EmmaGellerGreen · 05/04/2021 17:39
