Brand new 'big girl' bed today, mid sleeper with a den underneath. Twice today she's hit her head standing up under it. The second time we weren't in the room to see it but about 15 minutes later she got a brief nosebleed and then produced an enormous blood clot out of her mouth.

We rang 111 who weren't concerned but said they'd have someone call back for 'home management' advice. We kept her up for two hours but no one had rung so I let her go to bed. 20 minutes later they call and ask me to wake her.

I've never seen her asleep like that - we had to turn on the lights, pull off the covers, shake her and basically shout her name to wake her up. She's now gone to A&E with DH and I'm sitting here like a lemon watching my son's baby monitor with nothing to distract me from the panic.

Fuck that fucking bed. It took me a day to put together and I fucking hate it now. Jesus Christ I was terrified when we couldn't wake her, I think my heart stopped.

Distract me? Reassure me? I feel completely powerless and out of the loop.

I'm with you witches!

Pinkflipflop85 · 28/03/2021 05:54

I agree witches. Life is risky. As long as we protect from the serious risks that we can actually do something about,

My son once tripped over his own feet and faceplanted the corner of a wall in the house. Should we have taken the wall away? Stopped him moving around the house?!

Roonerspismed · 28/03/2021 07:10

Gosh you poor thing. How is she now?

Accidents happen and will do so again and again! Don’t beat yourself up. Xx

Sansaplans · 28/03/2021 07:21

Glad she's okay OP and you got her checked out. I am surprised at 111 as usually they recommend hospital for everything! Her bed sounds lovely, she will get used to it.

Rachie1973 · 28/03/2021 07:40

Lol I could amuse you for 24 hours straight with bizarre accidents to my 6 in my 30 years! They’re all still here lol

SpiderinaWingMirror · 28/03/2021 08:06

Glad it all worked out.
Can highly recommend cutting up a swimming noodle to stick on the bed!

starfishmummy · 28/03/2021 08:12

Glad shes OK and hope you all got some sleep.

BigFatLiar · 28/03/2021 08:38

Morning. Hope she's fine and causing mayhem.

I'd send DH out to get some padding for the bed just in case.

They do cause some worry when they're so little and you just want to keep them safe. However they'll still be causing you worry when they're bigger, thats what you signed up for as a mum.

Hope she's fine and enjoying all that telly.

Miscarriage39 · 28/03/2021 08:42

I am glad she’s okay.

OP dinky feel bad about the bed. I am surprised so many people on here have been critical, as lots of people we know bought them at a similar age. (If it’s an consolation, our son got one for his fourth birthday. He’s never had an accident despite being bonkers. (Our placid niece game over, and managed to both hit her head on the ceiling and bounce over the end during a two hour play date! And she was over 6).

SwanShaped · 28/03/2021 08:46

So glad she’s ok! Don’t feel bad. My kids band their head under their single beds coz they crawl under there. So unless you have a mattress on the floor, there’s a risk of head bangs. You can actually buy foam stuff for edges, we got some for our hearth. It has a sticky back and is right angle shaped so it fits over the edge.

Wtfdidwedo · 28/03/2021 08:49

Glad she's ok! My two have a double sleeper cabin type bed thing and they're both under 5. My 3 year old also swung between the gap in my sofas a few weeks ago and bumped her head. I didn't remove my sofas though...

Nishky · 28/03/2021 09:09

Glad it was ok, was going to post that my son had a bed like that at 4 ( maybe even 3 ) don’t blame yourself

I have to say some of the comments have made me laugh
‘I didn’t get rid of the sofas’
‘My son’s at university’

When I was about 10 I was speeding downhill on my bike with feet on the handlebars, hit a brick and face planted the tarmac.

I’ve passed loads of exams......

diddl · 28/03/2021 09:24

Glad all ok Op.

picklemewalnuts · 28/03/2021 09:37

Idea for making the bed safer...

Use pipe insulation foam, split along the length, stapled over the lip.

IEat · 28/03/2021 10:03

Sometimes it’s better to call 999 rather than 111. Spitting out a clot is a concern. Never worry that 999 will be busy or it might not be deemed as an emergency

BlackAlys · 28/03/2021 10:31

@wingsnthat

I’m surprised 111 weren’t more concerned tbh

Well let’s be honest, the bed was a bad idea if 1. It’s too low for her to stand up in and 2. If she isn’t mature enough to avoid standing up in it and keeps injuring herself

Can you replace the bed with the old one?

Helpful. I think that's the last thing OP needed to hear.
BlackAlys · 28/03/2021 10:35

Have just RTFT.
Hopefully you're all having extra sleeps this morning. Am relieved your DD is ok Thanks

Theunamedcat · 28/03/2021 11:03

The blood clot would have been from the nose bleed I had frequent nose bleeds as a child and blood clots would occasionally end up in my mouth I had to spit them out it was gross

CoffeeWithCheese · 28/03/2021 11:08

If you've got to age 4 with your first trip to A+E you're doing pretty well as a parent.

DD2 was a climber, DD2 is also dyspraxic. We were there a lot - gravity is not DD2's friend. Her latest one was to manage to fracture her wrist, falling UP the stairs. Then the little bugger's on the monkey bars at school with her wrist still in a wrist brace!

Nishky · 28/03/2021 11:12

@CoffeeWithCheese that is a really good point, with both of mine I think first A and E trips were about 2

Crappyfridays7 · 28/03/2021 11:30

I’m a paeds nurse and have 4 kids and can tell you many stories of my lot banging heads, falling off things or over things. Ds2 was coming up the stairs on dads shoulders exh forgot how low the ceiling was stood up and walloped my sons head off the ceiling oops he was fine though. I don’t see the point in parents waking kids at home either, kids tend to be groggy and disorientated if woken in the night from a deep sleep.

Any children we have in overnight for neuro obs are woken every hour for detailed obs. we often get kids in with daft injuries from silly things they’ve done parents are usually worried sick and embarrassed or feeling guilty but that’s life as a parent you can’t bubble wrap everything so no one has an accident. Sounds like the mud sleeper is more lethal when out of it than in the swimming noodle is a good idea for the lip especially if it’s brightly coloured she will notice it more & remember to duck right under, my boys are all fine after their bumps and accidents eldest is 20 soon he was the most accident prone of the 4.

Glad your daughter is home safe and sound op

jessstan2 · 28/03/2021 11:35

@Happyhappyday

BFF is a paediatrician and she always says re head bangs that the front & back of the head are really very difficult to actually cause injury because the bone is so hard there, especially if no lump etc.

We sometimes wake DD up if she's napping too long and it's like waking the dead, toddlers sleep HARD. The other night had to go in to do a poo check (2.5years) & she did not even move when I rolled her over and patted her bum to check for poop while stumbling around in the dark.

I've never heard of a 'poo check'. Would she not wake if she wanted to poo, and go to the toilet?
CautiouslyPessimistic · 28/03/2021 11:52

She's up. Her hair is sticking up in about 50 different directions so I'm guessing she slept pretty deeply, but she woke up as soon as I walked into the room (phew) and has had Mr Tumble and Nutella pancakes for breakfast, plus proclaiming that she 'had a nice time at the hospital' Hmm

CautiouslyPessimistic · 28/03/2021 11:53

(We do not normally sleep this late by the way, but with being up until early morning and the clocks changing she didn't wake up until 10.30)
