How to I make Legoland trip the BEST thing ever?

We won't manage a holiday this year even in the UK for a few reasons but we do have quite a good holiday budget....we've decided to take the children to legoland Smile

The children probably can't remember what exciting days out are like as I was shielding for most if last year so I want to make it a really memorable trip!

The are two hotels on site but I can't see much difference - how do I decide? We'll have FOMO whatever we do Grin

Any tips to make a great trip so good it will be remembered for years to come? Thanks!

Both hotels are good.

Spend the money instead on q/bots to get as many rides as possible

Hill top cafe at the beginning does Lego fries which are awesome

There's evening entertainment in the hotels so save energy for uht

PolarnOPirate · 27/03/2021 20:07

Yesssss watching this thread!! We have booked 2 nights at the hotel outside the grounds..... not the castle one, the other one. We live nearby so have been for a couple of day trips.
Fast passes are a must. Other than that, I’m here for tips!

PolarnOPirate · 27/03/2021 20:08

Also to add, we last went in summer 2020, so during covid. Was all fine and felt safe.

If summer, take a change of clothes or 2 for the water area!

Pool and restaurant are at the hotel outside the park, sorry can’t remember the name. So that’s why we booked that one (friend works there so recommended)

mamaduckbone · 27/03/2021 20:14

The best advice I had was from good old mumsnet - get there early and head to the furthest point first then work your way back so you aren't following the crowd. Take swimming stuff for the water bit in summer. We only went for the day so can't comment on the hotels but it was a lovely family day out with dc2 absolutely Lego mad at the time.

RainingZen · 27/03/2021 20:15

I am very, very familiar with Legoland. How old are your kids, as that influences what tips I will give you?!

FurrySlipperBoots · 27/03/2021 20:16

I've never been to Legoland but I should imagine there'll be horrendous queues for rides, so maybe have a stash of small pocket toys to keep them occupied in the hours of standing around time? If they get bored and frustrated you'll feel yourself getting stressed too, so maybe some open ended stuff like a little pot of playdoh each, a mini figure or 2 (Playmobil, or eh, lego!), stuff they can fidget with without annoying others around them.

FizzyPink · 27/03/2021 20:17

Let them eat all the crap food on offer instead of taking packed lunches. That would have made my year as a child Grin

PolarnOPirate · 27/03/2021 20:21

Luckily the queues weren’t too bad when we went in the summer - reduced numbers of people thanks to social distancing! We are going in May so there will be some restrictions thankfully!

Lilmzsnowflake · 27/03/2021 20:28

If you want to go in the water areas, you may need to prebook a time. Depends how they are managing it this summer but that was what they did last summer to limit numbers. Worth keeping an eye on the website as it sold out very quickly, I think the slots were released a week or so ahead. No extra charge though. Hopefully it might be more normal this year.
The refillable drinks were always super popular with mine as it meant I could just tell them yes, go ahead and fill up again. But the drinks stations weren’t well maintained the most recent time we went, could be due to restrictions, and a lot of people felt short changed by that. Separate drinks to buy are very pricey.
Big advantage of taking at least some of your own food in is that you can eat in queues if you need to, it passes the time and also saves having to sit in a restaurant.

JuneFromBethesda · 27/03/2021 20:30

Best thing we did was pay extra for the fast pass system. It was so nice being able to skip the queues!

Bluewavescrashing · 27/03/2021 20:35

Get there really early.

Go to the far end of the park and work your way back against the tide.

Take a big pack pack or wagon full of snacks, towel, spare clothes, drinks. Food there is shit and £££.

Eat lunch whilst queueing to maximise time on rides. Some of our best days were in the pouting rain...waterproof trousers are great for soggy bottoms on rides.

We had annual passes for 2 years via tesco club card. AMAZING days out especially as we live 1 hour away. It can get really busy. I fondly remember running excitedly to our favourite rides at 10am with a loaded buggy and staying all day. Good times.

thrownunderthebus · 27/03/2021 20:46

@RainingZen they'll be 6, 4 and 3 and all lego mad as the 3 year old has grown up with it whereas my 6 yr old could barely cope with duplo at 3 Grin

@FizzyPink this goes against all my instincts! But yes, if I try to think back to when I was a child I remember eating my squashed sweating Mighty White cheese sandwiches looking on in awe at rh children allowed to eat cafe food Grin

Such great tips already thank you.

I'm hearing fast passes, swim & change of clothes, try to book swim.areas in advance and either eat packed lunch in the queue to save time or spend my life savings on being cool with the junk food Wink After a year of "we're having a picnic children, won't that be fun!" I'm almost tempted by the £££ junk food myself

So the lego Hotel outside of the park is best as it has pool and restaurant? How do we get to the park? 3 yr old is just a bit too big for the buggy but she hasn't had her little legs tested on a BIG DAY OUT....I'm so excited about how excited they'll be!

AndAllOurYesterdays · 27/03/2021 20:57

Even with the fast pass (which is worth the £50) there will still be queues. So study the map before hand and plan which rides you want to go on so you don't waste time in the park deciding. Also the Legoland app is fab for finding out waiting times.

Bluewavescrashing · 27/03/2021 20:58

The original lego Hotel has its own entrance to the park. We've had a couple of bargain breaks there when the park was closed on one day either side, ie beginning or end of the season. DCs really loved it. But you can get much cheaper hotek breaks out of park. Marriott Slough is a great hotel. Have fun!

Bluewavescrashing · 27/03/2021 20:59

Bring the buggy!

Spidder · 27/03/2021 21:00

Think ours were 6 and 8. We went for 2 days. Day 1we ambled round, went on rides and looked at things. Ate lunch in the queues. Did the water park cos it was boiling.

Stayed in a travel inn or something. Second day we got fast passes because we knew we wouldn't be going back (other end of country) and hammered everything. Kids still talk about it.

MabelPines · 27/03/2021 21:02

You can hire buggies OP, and you will want to - there is a lot of walking.

I second the pp who said head to the furthest point and work your way back. I would take your own food though, the food available there is really dire. The hotel pool isnt that great either. But the rooms are lovely and you get a little treasure hunt which is a nice touch. My 10 yr old with ASD absolutely loves Lego, and we have had lots of lovely days out there since he was about 4, there is something for all ages.

Have a lovely time !

littlebillie · 27/03/2021 21:05

Insect repellent, I had over prepared for the day out yet the millions of wasps that day left us alone Grin

Wishitsnows · 27/03/2021 21:08

Stay in the newer hotel as then all the activities are in the other one so you get to go between both. It's great in the last hour of opening in the park as everyone says go early and so head off before the park closes so in the last hour no queues! It's been lock down for so long get the junk food and sod the picnic

MargosKaftan · 27/03/2021 21:08

We went last year instead of a holiday.

We went for the standard hotel, not the posher castle one and they loved it! There is lots of lego big builds around the hotel. We were in the kingdom themed rooms and have had a pirate room on a previous visit, you don't need to pay extra for a special theme, they are all pretty fabulous.

Get the q bots, its worth the money you can set one queuing as soon as you've got off a ride so by the time you've walked round to it you don't have long to wait. Get the app on your phone so you can see queue times.

Take refillable water bottles and do fill them up as you go, have some snacks on you.

The lego friends heart lake shows are good, but if its hot (as it was when we went) there's no shelter so take an umbrella.

If you can pre book a go at the duplo splash area do it. Its a lot of fun.

If you are staying at the hotel and have a 2nd day at the park, call it a day early - there will be entertainment at the hotel and don't make the mistake of trying to get your moneys worth and doing everything on the first day. The hotel stay is a big part of the trip so let them enjoy it. You do get to go into the park an hour early if you are staying in the hotel so plan to make the most of that. (Not all rides are on the early opening)

MargosKaftan · 27/03/2021 21:16

If you are in either than lego hotel or the castle hotel, you access the park directly from the hotel so go in at the back near the under water ride (which is amazing).

Thats also near the driving school and lifeguard rides, which are better for littler ones and tend to get big queues through the day, so getting there first is good on the 2nd day when you can get in early.

I think id take a buggy given the ages of yours, if anything just to pile all the crap up in. (Wear a cross body bag with your valuables in so you don't need to leave that on the buggy)
