Facial hair

thentheycameforme · 27/03/2021 19:43

Way TMI but no idea who else to ask, I have lots of hair, very thick and dark on my chin (needs daily plucking with a magnifying mirror) then some on my upper lip that is solved by hair removal cream every couple of weeks and then downy, fair hair all over the rest of my face.

I'd really love recommendations of how to remove on a permanent basis. Tried a home 'hair removal laser' but no change, tempted to use those daily facial razors but I get (irrationally) worried that if I ever couldn't do it, I would be like Mr Twit in a few days! Happy to throw money at it if necessary!

Bumping for you op. Do you have underlying health issue? Like pcos etxt

Yellowbowlbanana · 27/03/2021 20:38

I have this too OP so watching with interest. I hate it so much. I tried electrolysis but that left scarring. I have quite a few black hairs but a lot of them are fair or grey so laser would be no good.
I'm sure mine is hormonal (I'm 42) as it has only been bad for the last 5 years.

Solongtoshort · 27/03/2021 20:40

Don’t by one of those hair remover thing they sell for £20 in Tesco and Asda, is it JVC or something. It makes it worse.

I started last year getting hair, l got my lip and chin waxed, never again it hurt to much. Then l tried the thing l bought made it worse now l am back to plucking. It’s a pain.

Also watching with interest. I pluck daily, but the hairs have become much coarser and bristlier. I feel ashamed. I'm in my late 40s, still have periods, but suspect it's hormonal..

Tejutas · 27/03/2021 20:43

I do a combination of dermaplaning (ie shave it myself) and pluck out the thicker ones. I'll have electrolysis again at some point, I've had it in the past and it works well.

Laser wouldn't work on me as the majority of it is blonde.

Bobbybobbins · 27/03/2021 20:43

I'm 41 and mine gave definitely got worse since late 30s. I pluck - really don't fancy the shaving things. I have really thick dark eyebrows too - get so envious of friends who are less hairy!

foreverchangingmyname · 27/03/2021 20:44

I use them facial razors for the peach fuzz and love them, find my make up looks a lot more polished after I've used them. For hairy upper lip I get it waxed at the salon but have been using hair removal cream since their shut and that's okay but not as good. I pluck my chin. Got damn my genes

nevercannevercanever · 27/03/2021 20:47

I had exactly the same thing and tried home lasering but it had no effect. I recently paid for laser treatment at a salon and have had 5 sessions and the difference is amazing! Any hair that grows back is white so far less obvious but there I far less of it so I am no longer conscious of it I wish I had done it a long time ago

TheDogsMother · 27/03/2021 21:52

I had professional lasering about 12 years ago and it was the best thing I've ever done (excess hair wise Grin). A little bit of hair is returning but it's peach fuzz and I use the Veet dermaplaning thing.

BitOfFun · 27/03/2021 21:55

How much is salon lasering, roughly?

monkeymonday · 27/03/2021 22:02

Threading?

When shops open up

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 27/03/2021 22:08

Waxing/sugaring midcycle. Far less painful then.

And I'll just say that the one upside of Covid has been being able to not worry about regrowth (when the salons are open, of course - the rest of the time is using a men's electric shaver to avoid damaging the skin).

TheDogsMother · 27/03/2021 22:12

I'm not sure of the price these days. It felt expensive at the time but has been so worth it. I used a Philips Home laser for legs and underarms at the same time back in about 2007/2008. I wasn't that consistent but armpit hair is still non existent and leg hair is very fine and sparse. I was a person that struggled a lot with hair.

I had my professional treatment with skn clinic

Lumea has solved the problem of thick and dark chin hair for me. I have PCOS and since completing the initial recommended number of uses have to keep it topped up every few weeks but that’s infinitely better than having to shave it every day like I used to.

oopsydaisyyy · 27/03/2021 22:23

facial razor to take it off and a phillips lumea to zap them- hair will be gone for good- im sure theres more ipl zappers thingys but i know this one works 100% hence recommending.

Timeisavirtue · 27/03/2021 22:31

I have this aswell. I do have thyroid issues but this has mostly been a problem the last 2 years so not convinced if thyroid related.

lmao88 · 27/03/2021 22:36

I wouldn't recommend plucking/tweezers as you can get in-grown hairs which will only get worse, waxing may damage your face as this skin is the most sensitive. If you shave your face / chin / mustache regularly (like a few times a week) again you will damage the skin - might risk getting a "5 o'clock shadow" assuming your hair is thick. I would recommend threading or home IPL like Braun or Phillips.

mmc1xo · 27/03/2021 22:45

The facial razors are awful for your skin and can make you break out and the hair will also grow back quicker. I find waxing mine it stays away a lot longer. You can get a small wax pot with wax the wooden sticks pre wax cleanser and after wax all for around £20-£25. I use mine all the time it's great.

Howzaboutye · 27/03/2021 22:52

Op the home devices are IPL. You could try proper Lazer at a salon. That will work.

LastRoloIsMine · 27/03/2021 23:17

I shave. Have done for years.
No 5 o clock shadow.
No thicker hairs.
However I do have better skin as I shave my whole face which not only gets rid of hair and fuzz but dead skin too.

peachgreen · 27/03/2021 23:39

There's a clinic near me that offers 12 months of unlimited laser treatments for under £2k and I've been genuinely considering it. Would really love to never have to worry about hair removal again.

MoiJeJous · 28/03/2021 02:47

I currently use the Silk n Infintiy IPL for my chin hair. If you have the money, I’d give it a go. I’ve only just started treatment so I can’t tell you whether it works yet.

@thentheycameforme

The is a cream you can get from GP.
Called Eflora I think generic name is eflornithine. It’s works over a few months and then no issues.
But you have to keep using it.

thentheycameforme · 28/03/2021 08:39

Thank so much everyone, it's made me feel better that it isn't just me.

Lots of mixed reviews for things, I've got a lumea but I didn't see much different when I used it previously, I'll keep trying with that.

I'm really tempted by dermo planing but worried about it growing back and having to do it forever!

I have a real irrational fear that I'll up up in hospital and after a couple of weeks have full beard growth!

I think it's horses for courses really. Waxing brings me out in spots and would be too rough for my whole face.

I've dermaplaned once a week for a couple of years, it's very gentle - I never get spots and it's not come back thicker. I wish I'd done it earlier, I lived with a fuzzy face for far too long.
