Facial hair

Way TMI but no idea who else to ask, I have lots of hair, very thick and dark on my chin (needs daily plucking with a magnifying mirror) then some on my upper lip that is solved by hair removal cream every couple of weeks and then downy, fair hair all over the rest of my face.

I'd really love recommendations of how to remove on a permanent basis. Tried a home 'hair removal laser' but no change, tempted to use those daily facial razors but I get (irrationally) worried that if I ever couldn't do it, I would be like Mr Twit in a few days! Happy to throw money at it if necessary!

Don't do derma planing!! It can cause ingrown hairs and infection! It slices the top of the hair off (like shaving) making it grow back with a blunt end. In terms of hair removal, there is no difference between derma planing and shaving. Just takes some dead skin with it and has a fancy name. It will still grow back just as quick as it would if you shaved.

I would persevere with Lumea. Sometimes it can take 6/9 months, even a year to see a dramatic difference but eventually you'll only need to use it twice a year. The only time a Lumea won't be effective at all, is if the hair is light blonde/grey or white. It needs pigment to work.
If the hairs do have pigment, then it will eventually work. Also the beauty of Lumea/IPL is that you need to shave before you use it, so if you have somewhere to go you can shave, blast with Lumea/IPL and go! You don't have to wait for it to grow out like you do with plucking or waxing.

Whatever you do though, do pluck/wax right before using Lumea/IPL or it will NOT work! It uses the pigment in the hair which is still sat in the follicle beneath the skin after shaving in order to blast the follicle. If you pluck/wax/epilate then you're removing that pigment

*Do NOT! I meant do NOT pluck/wax before using Lumea/IPL! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

When it's allowed again, I would recommend threading. It's relatively painless and will remove all the hair, including the downy stuff, leaving a natural finish.

Oh, so I think that's been my problem, I have plucked before using it, so I'll leave it a couple of days, shave?! (I've never shaved my face!!) and then lumea? And repeat every 2 weeks? I do have some blonde and fair hairs, so not sure what to do with those.

It's rubbish you have to consider all of this on a daily basis!!

@thentheycameforme, I experienced your nightmare.

I have PCOS and have to shave daily. In fact, I haven't shaved today and have visible little bristles all over my top lip, chin and cheeks/ sideburns.

A couple of years ago, I ended up in hospital- it was a trip to A&E and then got admitted to a ward. I made sure I took my razor with me, but was too ill to leave my bed and ended up crying and admitting to a nurse than I needed to shave.

I might have to invest in a Lumea if others are recommending them!

MNWorldisCrazy · 28/03/2021 15:53

Yes that will definitely be why it's not worked!

Isadora2007 · 28/03/2021 16:00

I just shave. I use the razor with the block round it so I don’t need gel. Just do it daily in the shower. I think I may have something like PCOS but as I didn’t have any fertility issues I haven’t ever looked into it.

thentheycameforme · 28/03/2021 16:12

Oh no, sounds awful, I think I need a pact with a close friend that we will ensure facial hair is removed regularly in the event of incapacity!

I have really bad facial hair, on my chin and neck (mostly on one side bizarrely). I do have PCOS -diagnosed many years ago, and I assume it is related. Has gotten much worse the last 5 years or so - along with my weight. (I am 45) However the cruellest thing for me is that whilst my face gets hairier, the hair on my head is thinning massively. I am probably a year off needing a wig I reckon Sad. Has anyone else found a correlation? Tempted to let my chin hair grow really long and then make a wig out of it...

RoastChickenLastsForDaysonMN · 28/03/2021 16:34

@Candlestickchic, yes, definitely. It's the hormone imbalance, so it's like male-pattern baldness.

One thing I noticed that has helped is taking high strength Vitamin D tablets daily. I had really thin spots on my temples and since taking the vitamin, it's growing back.

peachgreen · 28/03/2021 16:48

@Candlestickchic I have PCOS too and I notice a HUGE difference with even just a small amount of weight loss. Easier said than done I know, but it really reduces the side effects.

MeadowHay · 28/03/2021 16:53

I'm really hairy (no health issues, just genetics!). I get threaded once a month or so (obviously can't in lockdowns) and then use my JML Flawless for touch ups/tweeze out odd random hairs in-between.

Candlestickchic · 28/03/2021 17:10

@RoastChickenLastsForDaysonMN thanks, I was advised by the gp to take vit D as I was low. I take Perfectil (when I remember) which has 5micrograms vit d - do you take higher?

@peachgreen Thanks, you’re right! I need to find some motivation from somewhere...

thentheycameforme · 31/03/2021 22:56

@MNWorldisCrazy ok, so I've left it a couple of days, shaved today and then used the lumea, but once i get regrowth, can I pluck or do I need to shave for the foreseeable?

Msgiggles30 · 31/03/2021 23:04

I have pcos and was prescribed vaniqua cream which slows the hair growth. Its really expensive though and only on prescription. I don't use it since I bought my lumea. The lumea definitely has reduced the amount i pluck but doesnt work on the downy hair as its too light. Ive taken to using nair on my jawline in addition to moustache like once a month. It does grow back but just downy then i still pluck those dark wirey ones..which are now about half as bad as they were before lumea. Lumea retards the hair at the root so yes need to leave some growth to use x

Cissyandflora · 31/03/2021 23:10

I used to work as an IPL therapist. This would definitely work on any dark hairs. I tried electrolysis years ago and am still scarred from it.

BritInAus · 01/04/2021 02:59

I have dark hair and pale skin. Have had my face and arms lasered at a salon, money very well spent. Salons near me often seem to have 50% off deals, so I booked several treatments then. I only have a tiny bit of regrowth now, so I just pluck the odd hair.

MrsMiggins9100 · 04/09/2021 17:49

hi all, what is a lumea and how does it work? thanks

sofato5miles · 05/09/2021 04:00

I get threaded every two weeks. It is not painless but it is thorough🤣

IceLace100 · 05/09/2021 04:36

I have loads of facial fair with no pcos or other health issues.

I cannot recommend electrolysis enough!!! So effective!!!

Oblomov21 · 05/09/2021 04:57

I have had electrolysis a few different times since my mid 20's. It's been the only thing that's ever taken it away and given me any real solace.

Why didn't you continue to use the vaniquia?
